I have looked into this in great detail as well as already having a Heat Pump for my outside office. Yes in the warm weather you can very easily get 4 times as much heat out as the Electricity you put in. That said, I have the manufactures data sheets for these "Heat Pumps" and they confirm that when the outside temperature drops the heat pump efficiency also drops to less than twice the heat out to the Electricity needed to run. Given that Electricity is some 4 times the cost of gas then heat pumps are VASTLY MORE EXPENSIVE to run when the outside temperature is low. This is true all the time the outside temp is less than 10 deg Celsius

I have just had 1 out of 2 scheduled Octopus "Smart meters" installed. On the first scheduled visit the 3rd party installer refused to do the installation claiming he had "to many calls to make and needed at least 4 hours just to the "smart" Electricity meter" He took loads of photos of my existing meters and left. On the next scheduled visit the 3rd party installer fitted the new Electricity "Smart" meter but asked for a hammer as he had got the screws in the isolator switch "Cross Threaded" and needed a hammer to bang them in. He did not fit the new "Smart" Gas meter as he said he did not have the right parts.

As a small property developer, building ICF homes to sell, heat pumps would be great for the home buyer but as we don't receive any govt discounts, gas is way cheaper to install and provides heat and hot water.
