For information , we have been going in circles for months trying to get the home mini to work with the second smart meter recently installed , the first one never worked at all after being fitted in September. Finally after several wasted visits by Octopus engineers we have been told by customer services that the mini will not work if you have a 3 phase supply, now being sent an IHD which they say will work with a 3 ph meter . On a brighter note and after several failed attempts we are now on the " fan club 4" tariff which looks to reducing our costs by a significant margin.

Just heard Greg's comment on BBC Radio6 News. "Reforming the way energy is priced' - KEY WORDS!! Already established as a potential alternative: Fuel Poverty Action - Energy For All. "A free band of energy so EVERYONE can heat and eat (access the basics). After that - Use More, Pay More (or Use Less and Pay Less). This would not only help those who have less income but would also encourage those who have more to use less, thus helping the planet!!!"

Every time I do the calculation, there's no point in a heat pump. The COPs you see banded about are for unrealistically low flow temperatures. Unless you can install underfloor heating and you have a LOT of space for extra radiators, forget about 35 degree flow temps. Also, low flow temps mean the system can't warm a house from cold, so you have to keep it running 24/7 and it's therefore losing heat more than an intermittently-heated house would. And you will probably need to use an immersion heater rather a lot, since lukewarm hot water is no good for anything. A realistic COP with a very good ASHP, if you can't change rads, is about 2.5. A GSHP would do better, but even after the grant they cost tens of thousands to install. The way forward when gas is funally turned off is probably high temperature ASHPs, but we'll still be paying more to run them.

I hate the smart meter as sometimes we pay online and don’t get the Electric. An 18 digit UTR Number is frustrating having to go through 10 numbers to get 1 digit I give up and have lost money due to not being able to input the 18 digits. The key meter was easier and simple I’d much prefer that method. A key- pad would be easier than the present system.

Everyone raves about heat pumps and yes they heat the house and work in the winter and not that noisy. But they are very expensive, complicated and difficult to get repaired. Everyone who has one installed reels of great cop figures and how warm it is and how much better than a combi boiler ect, but the question that is never answered is what is the payback? Same as solar! When do you get free electricity? Never get the answer. Would you pay £15k for a heat pump that will in reality only save approximately £200 a year. Ps, will need massive radiators and a small room to house all the kit.

Near to where I live a new estate has been built NOT a solar panel in sight and yep gas boilers.so why are they not fitting them in new builds?
@rogercantwell36222 күн бұрын
Because, all things being equal, heat pumps will still cost more to run. OK, if you ignore water heating costs and are happy with fairly low room temperatures, you can probably break even, but the unit cost of electricity is many times that of gas, and that cancels out the COP of any ASHP unless it's so warm outside that you don't need heating anyway.

Unless you live in Scotland
@ozolinsivars5 күн бұрын
Problem with Scotland is that most houses are built in last century and are poorly insulated. So no matter what heating system you have, it will have to run for long periods. My house in Aberdeen is built around 1950, I have done under floor insulation, some walls, and there is close to nothing I can do about roof. Thus I am facing constant damp issues there, escaping heat. Means heating on for longer, means higher bills.

We spent <£50 on the sauces and nuggets. We're absolutely in agreement of where our money and focus should go: we're the only large supplier that's always priced below the price cap, spent £150m+ to reduce people's bills through the energy crisis, started a £30m fund to relieve customers struggling with bills and send out free electric blankets - just a few examples. It's important to make content like this - for Greg to answer your questions and for us to make energy more engaging - but trust me, we take it seriously and don't spend a load on these videos.

For us the cosy tariff is not bracketed correctly for our heat pump use. I know the theory is leave it running 24/7 but that’s not how I want to use it. We don’t run heating at night unless it’s really cold. Most of the winter we want the pump working from 06:30 until 2100 hours. Cosy cheap rate is 0400 -0700 too early. Good energy has their cosy set from 0500-0900 much more usable

After my experience with trying to get Octopus to fit a smart meter over the past year, I have zero confidence in letting them fit a heat pump. After 4 different meters fitted in the past year, they couldn't get it to work. Ended up with an economy 7 meter put in last month, but i now can't submit meter readings because I'm still waiting for my account to be updated from single usage reading to two readings (off peak & peak rate). Their customer service is a joke. This is their core business and they can't even get it right. A heat pump? Just would not trust them....

There is a major problem with communicating with Octopus. They failed to tell me that they lost contact with my smart meter at the beginning of the month. I only realised this when looking at the consumption records - which ended at the start of November. Now I find that I am unable to change tariffs because they have no idea was my consumption is - and it was left to me to tell them! Why does their 'monitoring' not show red flags when the data stream collapses? It takes them ages to actually take action, as well! Wake up Octopus - stop gathering in customers when the ones that you have cannot communicate with you - nor you with them!

TJ "Older heat pumps" must be at least 20 years ago. Heat Pumps have modulated for years I don't know of any modern one that doesn't. I think there is some conflation here between Design Temp and Flow Temp. They are different. Just because it's Designed for 50 deg (max at -2 deg outside) doesn't mean that the Flow Temp will always be 50 too. The flow temp will reduce as the temp outside rises.
