Could be dangerous for the octopus for sure but if it was mounted properly, there might be a way. I second this idea if it can be applied safely. What an underrated suggestion you have there!
@ThePodVon4 жыл бұрын
That is an excellent suggestion. It may be a different test I am thinking of but I thought the mirror test did involve the animal being able to circle the mirror to establish the non-existence of the image as a physical form. To me it looked like he was convinced the mirror was just another partition he could get around/behind and he didn't even stop to think about an alternative. It is possible his reaction would have been very different if he had been able to reach behind and thus be forced to think about it in non-survival terms. @Ash Boucher I think sandwiching the mirror between two half-height (or width) partitions would be safe while still giving access to both sides.

I'm curious if an octopus could figure out how to use a touch-screen? Maybe convey some simple abstract puzzles with symbolic images, and if it gives the right answer it receives a food reward. Would be interesting to see how well that works. (From what I understand they're fairly intelligent animals, but with short life spans there is quite a limitation to what they can possibly learn.)

Unfortunately or not, it lives in the ocean where we cannot and so has evolved for that environment. Think of space (the final frontier kind). The ocean and space have a lot in common and a lot not in common. Humans cannot live there. Will only land creatures evolve to leave their planets or will water based creatures also be able to evolve to leave their planets? It's a huge question! Humans evolved because they stopped living moment by moment/day by day. What do you think would happen if sea creatures no longer had worries about food, shelter or danger? It took homo sapiens hundreds of thousands of years to learn to farm, but homo sapiens weren't really less smart than we are now. We built foundations from which to grow with each generation. The Earth warmed and cooled, warmed and cooled even as homo sapiens created civilization(s). And, yet, there is no known civilization over 20,000 years old/ago. Why? Aren't you curious? Does the octopus know it's a mirror? Does the octopus know he is being watched by more than 7K humans (KZbin views)? Do humans know if they're being watched? ...

He has company - lol - I have never seen one of these vids where the octopus was completely alone in the filming tank. Humans are also company for these curious animals. The constant presence of another octopus would only cause territory/mating anxiety; they are not generally herd animals. Encounters between them in such close quarters have to be carefuly managed. As far as I have learned; a bored octopus is one who dismantles his tank and turns up in the cafeteria, eating your sandwich from the tuperware box you hid at the back of the fridge. ;) I expect that the 'living tanks' have additional 'toys' to keep them occupied. A stressed octopus often self-harms so if it looks healthy it is probably not unhappy.

@LoLotov5 жыл бұрын
@@thegrandtickler2907 brought up lots in these comments but figured I'd say something here. It seems very unlikely to me that the actual spot test would work on these particular animals, not from any lack of intelligence, but just from how touch oriented they are. There isnt really a part of an octopus that they aren't physically aware of, and it would probably feel whatever was applied long before they saw it in a mirror.

He seemed to act different around his reflection though. I think while he may not have fully realised what was happening the pieces were beginning to fit together in his head. While we are focussing on him, he made sure thats no other octopus behind the mirror! Wouldn’t he change color, if he really think there’s another of his kind? He’s smarter than we think

Helga Falckenberg It would have been cool to see him go through a bunch of color shifts to see if it was really HIM. :)

Anti - Ethnic Cleansing Yes, indeed! But watch his thin parts of his arms/legs, they are very soon behind the mirror... And do we know if this is his first time for him having a mirror in his glass house?
@alexontheedge5 жыл бұрын
How would the octopus (is this Arnold?) behave if there WERE another octopus? Are they aggressive when others enter their territory? Also, what if the mirror were free-standing? He's obviously feeling behind it, as much as he can, with the very thin tips of his tentacles. If the mirror stood free in the middle of the tank & he could get around to a blank (not mirrored) back, would that tell him more about what he was seeing? That there was no other octopus? Or, considering how squished they can get, would he just think that what he was seeing was a very flat other octo inside a very thin enclosure??

I wonder if one of your octopuses would pass some kind of a self-recognition test (aka the red mark test). For example, if you put a mirror in the tank for a few days, so that the octopus has a chance to get used to it, and then place some kinds of marks on its forehead or one of its limbs and see if it can recognize it

I have watched a few of these octopus videos already, I am beginning to be a fan. The only thing that bothers me is how empty the octopus tank is. Does he have another tank where he lives and one where you conduct these experiments? I would think that such an intelligent animal would not be affected positively being in such a lonely tank. Maybe post a video showing his new home that resembles some of the natural elements he would have if he were out in the wild.
@johannageisel53905 жыл бұрын
On their homepage they say the animals are kept in large and stimulating tanks and are only put into these empty aquariums for the experiments.

That was the strangest behavior! He first went over there and was just SO chill! I thought, Maybe he knows it him! Then, of course, he grows pensive. Then the second time he went over, he punched it! LOL! Then he was chill again! That's why I suspect he was just messin about. There is NOTHING funnier than when goes back into his barrel and leaves the tiniest bit of eye peeking!! LMAO!

A one-way mirror would be cool. You can set up a camera behind so we can see the direct interaction and approach, or if he could see through it.

This is fascinating! it's trying to look it's mouth, this is a common reaction of animals that recognize themselves in mirrors. Elephants and primates also look the inside of their mouths

Most animals have 4 limbs to deal with, some have six, but imagine having eight, all wrapped around different things, which you can all see thanks to 360 degree octovision, and taste all at the same time. Then tell me its easy to check out a mirror. Notice he didnt attack it with force, or the mirror would break. Most animals would scratch at the mirror to try to go through it, or eventually try to move out of the way of the reflection while smelling it. To try to go around it would suggest, like a dog or cat, the animal would try to get around the situation. Having failed, the animal would run back to their owner, having got bored with it, or frightened.

Unfortunately that doesn’t prove a thing in relation to the mirror recognition test requested. Can you put a mark on the octopus and try again please? It would be ground breaking if they did recognise the mark, making them only the ninth creature on earth including us with this ability.

@beckyheydemann13324 жыл бұрын
Jay WhoLovesEveryone octopus is a Greek work, not a Latin one. Its proper plural follows the Greek and becomes octopuses or octopodes. The Oxford English Dictionary allows the use of all three.
