What’s not shown: the octopus takes the keys, steals the keeper’s car, and drives to the beach to make his escape.

Try making a key engineered for the octopus that opens a sealed box with a treat inside. Show the octopus how to use the keys, and then see the octopus reactions.

I don't think the key would have to engineered for the octopus. Demonstrate how the key opens the lock, put a treat in he can taste (small hole). Then put the container and key in the tank. Make sure the key doesn't work in any other locks...

@@existentialerasure Engineered so it is light enough for the octopus to carry it, and turn without to much strain and annoyance, or else the octopus would find it's uncomfort more important than the food.

The colour play on his skin is very fascinating. Imagine his disappointment when he realised, that he can't eat the keys. I always wonder where an octopus has its front and where its back. The bag always looks to me like a huge nose, but sometimes they move in a direction while the bag is behind them. So, do they have front and back at all?

The keys pile should have been lighter so he could lift and play with them. I wouldn't even want this heavy set in my purse. Think Octolab, jeez. And the poor octi keeps bashing into the sides of the tank. Like put in some plants or something so he has some point of refence.

After seeing the video where the octopus pulled the nipple out of the bottle with a treat inside (a feat a human couldn't duplicate under water according to the video), I think the octopus wasn't trying to pick the keys up. Apparently the octopus can generate a lot of force when motivated.

Interesting idea about making a key to open a container to get a treat. How about something akin to a baby puzzle? That is with three rods: square, triangle, circle. Then a clear perspex ("plexiglas") panel with the corresponding cutouts, and a treat visible at the back of one. The correct rod will push the treat out the back and it falls down to the tank. The back of the puzzle would need to have something to deter the octopus reaching for the treat around the back directly. Could it be done?
