While learning night scuba diving I got a burning jelly stuck to my face. It tried to steal my cyclop and mouth piece. It was highly annoying, and then highly painful. I still (decades later) have one swollen lymphnode in my neck. It makes a cool story, especially if I spice it up by saying "at night the monster crawls out of me, and it's huuungry...". Works great with kids and kid-minded people. Story totally worth the pain.

For those wondering what the first hydrozoan was it’s called a siphonophore. Similar to the man-o-war it’s a colonial organism meaning it’s body is made up of various components that fill different roles like feeding and navigating the environment for example. There able to grow new individuals on there body to take advantage of a new food source.

Jellyfish is a genre of animal, not a biological class. Same with the colloquial use of the word "fish" in general, which as a genre could also decribe things like whales and dolphins. As a genre, jellyfish could be graded upon a spectrum of how jellyfishy they are.

One time when I was 8, I was stung by some kind of jelly in the gulf coast of Florida (I never saw the jellyfish who knows) and it felt like my leg was sliced with a blade. After my parents called the hotel’s front desk for advice, they said to put vinegar on it. Not having vinegar on hand, they made a poultice of miracle whip for my leg. Instantly fixed the problem like magic. Miracle whip worked a miracle that day

Great episode, so glad I found this channel. If you’re ever thinking about another jellyfish episode, can’t recommend enough you let everybody know about the debt that modern biologists owe to jellyfish for Aequorea victoria’s Green Fluorescent Protein; and about how ever since GFP’s discovery scientists have been finding, engineering and ‘breeding’ new fluorescent protein varieties from it for cool applications (super-resolution microscopy, synthetic biomolecular circuits, etc). I’ve actually painted a few works of bio-art in living bacterial ink on petri dishes, with the colors coming from E. coli strains expressing different modified jellyfish proteins that glow green, red, yellow, blue, and other colors under UV light. Another gift from our alien ocean!

The "fish" in jellyfish is an old English word for, in short, any creature that lives in the water. This is why jellyfish are called jellyfish and starfish I called starfish; the creatures that live in water, and they were discovered when "fish" was the catch-all term for anything that lives in the water. The same thing can be said for the word "apple", as that was the old English word for fruit. So, a pineapple is just a fruit that looks like a pinecone. If we were to name the fruit today, it would be called a pinefruit

The immortal Jellyfish was referenced many times in a seminar course I took at U of Michigan, on the Philosophy of Death. One goal was to arrive at a reliable definition of death.

helpful analogy for cyst vs cyte: a toolbox in a shed could be described as a toolocyst in a toolocyte!

I would love if you made a second channel, or a playlist where you just ramble about specific topics for hours, as you say you can, because honestly too, that would be something I'd pay for, maybe a future patreon idea??

Jellyfish seem to me categorized well by how you described it. So basically excluding the hydrozoans. Because at least the other classes are easily defined as a single organism.

fun fact, all jellyfish have eyes of ranging complexity! Box jellies, (my faves) have very complex eyes for a simple organism like jellyfish! It is also theorized that box jellies can see their prey and conciously move towards it!

My idea of a Jellyfish: An extremely simple multicellular organism composed of a gelatinous material with a main Bell body , tentacles typically used for feeding in some way, and is free-swimming. I put Jellyfish alongside 'Crab' as one of those designs that just works well enough it has a million technical 'mimics' to whatever people want to call True Jellyfish. Edit: yes, I know there are the ones who spend time as polyps with some even having alternative adult forms. When they are in their not-free-swimming form they are 'not currently a jellyfish' in my book.
