Bond gets out of a scrape in OCTOPUSSY using the nifty Acrostar ”Bede” Jet. For close-ups of Bond manoeuvring the jet through a hangar, special effects supervisor John Richardson mounted a plane on a pole attached to a stripped-down Jaguar. The car was driven through the hangar at breakneck speed, soldiers running in front of the car to hide the chassis.

The most realistic part of this whole scene is that for once when a plane runs out of fuel in a movie, it doesn't just fall out of the sky.

To be fair, jet engines aren't actually picky. The specifics of the burner might need to be modified, but it isn't like a piston engine that needs to have it burn only at a certain time and speed. It's absolutely possible that lighter oils might just work.

I was projectionist for this when we received it in the summer of 1983. I really like the opening with the jet but having said that my brain over analyzes everything. When the jet enters the hangar at that speed, he would have exited almost as fast as he entered. Also showing Moore in a model tilted and slowed down, the prop holding the right wing is painfully obvious. Other than that and the Tarzan yell and clown scenes, it's a very underrated 007 adventure. Actually my favorite of Moore's. If John Barry had done the music for TSWLM, then it would have been rated a 10 out of 10.

Roger Moore was the best Bond of all of them. He added more humor and style than all of the other Bonds put together.

He cut his chops portraying Simon Templar in “The Saint” from 1962-1969, a suave sophisticate, knight-in-shining-armor type. That said, he didn’t exactly portray Ian Fleming’s fictional hero too accurately.

Never knew a jet could bank sideways and stay airborne at 15 mph, (albeit he was navigating through a hangar and didn’t want to scratch the paint. )

@@Bartonovich52 no man, you watch too many movies. That sound is a siren that the germans used to put on their planes in WW2. At a certain speed achieved by diving they would make that distinct sound. It was for psychological warfare.

I luv this sequence & must've seen this movie a hundred times since it came out 37 yrs ago. But I never noticed, until now, that there's actually a Learjet (posing as the AcroStar) flying toward the hangar at 1:32. You can even see it's twin engine nacelles towards the back of it's fuselage.

Watch the hangar scene and explosion back in slow motion. Really impressive special effects. Yes, the plane was on a cable (that you can't see at all), but it's all so well done

Roger Moore is my favorite 007. I am not saying he is the best Bond. But he's the one I first saw back when I was a little kid and was amazed at how badazz he was. My dad always said check out Connery and I have. Him and I have even watched some of the older ones. Connery is great. So are the other "newer" ones and Daniel Craig. But Roger Moore is my favorite.

Everything in Bond movies always explodes - except for SAM missiles, which just sort of lazily follow Bond's plane. SAM missiles are designed to explode in proximity - not on impact. As far as how close the missile got to Bond's plane here - he died 3 times.
