@@Jolmex I don't personally own a rift s ( I own an index, vive, and quest) but you should check out thrillseekers video on how the rift s is not dead... It still has superior tracking, resolution, hz, etc. Basically still go for a rift s unless you plan on using your quest a lot on the go when you travel etc. this does make sense to me because while I still love my quest I find myself using my index 10 times more since when I'm out and about I have other things to be doing than vr.

@@Ronnie.1 Yeah, but I feel that would take away from the point of the built-in finger/hand tracking, you could have just gotten Vive trackers if you need a dedicated tracking device for your body. The legs might be okay, but I think for hands, they will just have to work out how to distinguish overlapping objects like Hands in a reliable manner. If this is done, it could open up a lot of potential for built-in hand tracking not just for Oculus but for the rest of the VR industry, so I don't think dedicated tracking devices are the way to go, at least not if they already are working on this method.

Being part and even staff of Helping Hands (a Major Deaf Culture and Sign Language Community from Vrchat) Im beyond excited for this. We've been looking forward to this for a while. I really hope that once it gets ported into VRChat the Handtracking can work fast enough to track e.g. Handspelling though I doubt that it will be able to differentiate some letters (e.g. E and S because the difference is that you move your thumb infront of your finger while making a fist facing away from you, with the E its below them). Still for general sign and conversations this sounds great and could be a huge revolution, because even though the Index Controllers are better for signing its still very cluncky while this is literially natural to anyone that speaks ASL / KSL / FSL or others natively. This is awesome, and I cant wait to see people using it in VRC , Rec Room etc!

If anyone is having trouble like I did with this then follow these steps: Go to the settings tab and click all settings. At the top you should see the update make sure you are on 12.0 if you are not you can download the update from the settings. Once it’s updated restart the oculus and go to the all settings tab. Go to experimental and turn on hand tracking. You should now be able to enable it but if you can’t restart once more.

Yeah Leo, I do think that the rift S will be seeing this update soon, mainly because the inside-out tracking of the Rift S is the same technology as the Quest but more powerful. The 5 cameras would add to the precision of the tracking.

Rift S was always just a fill in headset for the Quest. So not sure why people are surprised that it is being left behind, that was always the plan. Oculus only ever wanted one main headset that was capable of both mobile and PC VR. And now with the link that is possible, plus it can now also do hand tracking. When the Quest 2 come out, it will blow all competitors out of the market not only on specs but price. If you don't own a Quest then you will be left behind, its that simple..

Hey mike! big fan thanks for the great content as always :) just to clear something up though, I see a lot of people bringing up that this will be great for deaf people in the sign language community. Being someone that took ASL (American Sign Language) in high school for four years I can tell you it is not at a point unfortunately *yet* where sign language is a viable option with this new hand tracking feature due to the fact that you cant cross your hands over one another and yes while many signs involve just one hand many signs also involve two so it would be quite difficult to communicate with people when such a large portion of your dictionary gets cut off. For that reason I do hope this can get to a point where you can cross two hands over one another but for now it just doesn't seem like a solution for communication in the deaf community however it is a great step forward. Edit: I also wanted to say that a lot of Sign language involves using facial expressions and your arms, legs, in fact some signs involve using your whole body

I've been playing VRChat and found a world that teaches you the basics of ASL. There are some signs that don't work and some signs that are pretty weird, but the community I've involved myself with seems to get by alright. Even with the limited hand controls it has at the moment. Now that the quest has hand tracking, and if VRChat adds it to the game, I imagine it would add a little bit more in some aspects but overall it would lack do to the occlusion issue. Overall I think it's a good step in the right direction to find new and better ways to track hands as best as possible.

However trying to spell out a full sentence in that case would take about 2 minutes so its not very practical and its also really difficult to follow what someones saying when they do that. Imagine someone speaking to you but their just spelling out the words without actually saying it

Rift s was only released because the quest wasn't ready yet, it's a lenovo device, facebook have zero support for it, I bought one on release and it still doesn't work with my pc that has higher than min specs. Just get a quest and forget about the S

@@andrew1550 Pretty much everything you've said is just plain false. Facebook has been supporting it, and actually fixed some of the largest gripes people have had with tracking. The real reason hand tracking isn't on the Rift S (at least for now) is because the Quest framework is completely different than the Rift S, meaning that in order to get handtracking on PCVR they'd likely have to re-do it. Lots of other reasons, but lenovo owning the Rift S isn't the reason.

My roommate who is deaf has been dying to try VR but it’s very difficult to explain everything he needs to know in sign prior to him putting on the head set and then trying to recall all of the small details. Absolutely can’t wait to see where this technology goes!

Thanks for the quick review there. The idea of an ASL training app seems really interesting. Once my Quest arrives, I'll definitely give the feature a try. Definitely going to peek at the Unreal Engine integration as well and see what goes into adding gesture support.

I am selling my Rift S to buy the Quest 2. No wires, no sensors. Far better resolution!!! Just makes sense to me. Plus the dropping of support for everything but the Quest 2 makes my decision all the easier. Thanks for your great videos!

I have a Quest since yesterday: what bothers me is that I see like grey backlight, if I watch black content or black test videos. How can this be with OLED-Displays? Do you have the same issue?

Thank you, that you replied, but unfortunatelly this was no help. I already opened an Oculus support ticket, because I have 2 dead pixels also. After I receive my new Quest I will tell, if theres the same issue with black.

I had to restart the Oculus Quest approximately three times before the update took. Once you get to version 12, one more restart and you'll get the option for hand tracking. (In case others are trying to get the hand tracking feature working). Now if only there was an app that took advantage of this feature! Gestures need some improvement, but it's a good start!
