We all talk about our Drones flying through areas with a lot of wifi interference and possibly loosing connection......Does it work in reverse if the controller is in a heavily populated wifi area and the drone is 1km away in the middle of the countryside with no wifi interference. Basically.....is the controller affected by wifi interference just as much as the drone. Whats your thoughts?? Thanks ..Mark

Hi Mark ... Yes indeed any interference between the controller or the drone will affect signal, you're just as likely to fly your drone out of an high interference area as you are to fly in to it. Of course if your controller is in an urban area yet you fly out to countryside yes you are right you will still struggle at times.

This is particularly annoying when panning with a drone gimbal that’s why I noticed most flyers will avoid this in their videos. I recently experimented with making sure my export bit rate was the same or higher as the bitrate it was filmed in. Thanks for the best explanation of Ocusync 2. The other day when it was calm I went flying my DJI Mavic Mini. Fortunately I live in a very rural area. I used up one battery, put in another, took off and quickly noticed signal issues. Checked the Transmission and found that it had automatically gone to 5.8. Landed drone and looking at the Transmission noticed the 2.4 bars turning red. At one point all the 2.4 bars were red! All 5.8 bars were green. In the past, when I have checked, usually every single 2.4 bar is green. What is causing this interference considering my rural situation.
@GAVINHR3 жыл бұрын
Thats quite strange however not uncommon, I wish I could advise perfectly but I can't- however I will say sometimes those bars need a few minutes to 'settle down' - for example its not uncommon if you switch to a manual channel for it to go red initially even if it was showing green before - just one of those little quirks!

As you know on both Mini 2 and Mavic Air 2 many are experiencing loss of connection, now that happens even on relatively short distances, ruling out signal strength issues, which makes me wonder whether the remote receiver is some times missing the data packet from the drone informing of a dynamic band change.....what is your take on that being reason? Ocusync out of sync?
@michaelweeks92733 жыл бұрын
All honestly and with a hundred % truth the answer to your question . The actual reason is a regional. Let me explain DjI mini 2 that is sold in the North American drone market is different than the ones over in Europe and many other countries. Here in North America the mini 2 drone along with the RC231 remote control. Has better technology and stronger frequency. If you research there are three models. One model is marketed for the North American market and China. The second model is meant for the European market and most others. And last but not least the model that was intended for Japan a 199g it has a smaller and lighter battery. And if you actually sit down and think about this issue. I can almost guarantee you can't find one drone channel on KZbin that's from north America that has or talks about a signal loss or transmission

I would guess that we are dealing with at least 3 points of signal interference, one where the drone happens to be and one at the controller position plus anything in between. Hopefully ocusync finds a clear channel amongst all the others that may be present.

Not sure that I convinced with your conclusion that automatic frequency hopping is the only special sauce that makes Occusync so much better than Wifi connectivity. I say this because the Parrot Anafi has automatic frequency hopping and yet it's transmission system is not very good.
@GAVINHR3 жыл бұрын
It's not the only special sauce .. there are other factors at work such as seperate video and signal channels and it's interference rejecting properties but that's all for another video. Essentially this is about people understanding the primary concept on why the mini 2 signal is better than the Mavic mini :)

Thank you. This is one of the bits of information i was looking for. I bought the mavic mini, happily because it was sub 250g. Then i learned about the coming fpv, occusync, etc. Now i’m feeling like system obsolescence is a problem. Why bother if the controller is not forward compatible with newer drones, it seems i really need to just hold off buying anything until the systems are well above my drone interest needs. Only the kit builders, maintain usefullness, i thought, then i saw a wall of unused drones, boxes with no longer used controllers. This industry is far from future (2 years) proof

Transmit power is not only stronger in the controller, it's also stronger in the drone. Combine a stronger signal (that inherently reflects/deflects better) with a system that offers auto-sensing and channel switching - that's a no-brainer! Thanks for the vid.

Having been involved in setting up long range WiFi service systems in the 90s, I am well impressed with your explanation of how it works and OccuSync's role in the spectrum. I would like to see an explanation such as this that discusses the LEAS system of such as Hubsan products some time. I've subscribed to your channel as a result of this video... Thank you...

This is why one needs a phone with 802.11ac WIFI to run the software effectively. Because it is capable of changing frequency on the fly as it were.

Again, as I have said before, high power RF signals can also give connection problems even if not on the same frequency. The most problems people have is near airport or weather radar systems plus near aircraft ILS or beacons. These can be in very unusual locations such as the beacon at Holderness in East Yorkshire. It literally is a horizontal mast on what looks like a farmhouse but the beam transmission from it is immense!

Thank you for the video My mini2 has been in service for more than a month, and I am very satisfied with its performance, image quality and flight performance. As far as signal transmission is concerned, I have encountered two times of loss of image transmission (control signal is not lost), which is really stressful. Both times were in the case of a lot of trees, so I suggest that when flying mini2, avoid taking off in the forest and other places with luxuriant vegetation.

Nice explanation of the 2 variant types of transmission, I like the ease of the description without getting overly technical about it especially For people that didn't understand I'm sure they do now 👍

Thanks Richard, I appreciate some purists won't agree as there is much more technical differences but the basic principles are it still is WiFi based and effectively the channel switching that makes the difference to a better signal

Related to my other comment your video seems to conclude that the Mavic Mini's (v1) Extended WIFI does NOT have real time frequency hoping (and hence this is largely but not solely per your clarifications in your response) why Occusync 2.0 signal is significantly more resistant to interference. Do you have proof (based on tests) that this is the case (i.e., no dynamic frequency hopping in Extended Wifi)? I don't know for sure...so it's an honest question. I guess I'm dubious that DJI's Extended Wifi wouldn't include dynamic channel hopping capability given that other competitor's drones from 2-3 years ago had that capability. I ask because if the Mini 1's Extended WIFI offering DOES have dynamic channel hoping then one must conclude that the "other special sauce" of Occusync 2.0 is far more important than the dynamic channel hopping capability and that other "special sauce" accounts for the significantly better range (and interference resistance) of Occusync 2.0. Again, it's possible you are 100% right but I'd love to see some test data to prove that your assumption is correct. Any chance you could do some more testing to confirm your finding (that the Mini 1's Extended Wifi doesn't do dynamic channel hopping). Or maybe DJI techs could confirm your assumptions...personally I haven't had much luck getting technical info from DJI. Sorry not trying to be "difficult" it's just my nature to ask questions and verify what I hear. Cheers.

No problems at all.. to sum up.. I have tested this on the Mavic mini, I once asked DJI support if the Mavic mini can channel hop as I believed it made sense to do so otherwise what would be the point in the auto feature right? That was my thinking. When I asked them they told me that is could switch channels in flight - I was happy and went away to test it. On numerous range tests that you can see in my back catalogue - of course all the range tests are not published only the ones that go perfect and show conclusive results made videos - and in all that time flying I never once saw the drone return home on a different channel when left on auto after take off - observing the channels whilst in flight it also remained static coming to the conclusion that other people were correct and that it cannot channel hop as I was actually trying to prove.

@@GAVINHR Thanks for the response...I have a follow on question re: your answer. While I've seen some of your range tests I've not seen all off them. So here is my question, have you ever done a range test in a wifi congested area? Typically range tests are done in areas where there would be little to no interference as the goal is to see how far you can go. If you aren't testing in wifi congested areas then I think it is possible that you wouldn't see the frequency hopping...particularly if your only measurement of it is to compare the take off channel to the channel used on the return. It could be that DJI's algorithm is to only check other channels when the interference is detected vs hopping when the channel signal becomes weak due to distance limitations. Or they could check other channels and if no better channel is found simply return to the original channel. It's also possible that DJI's channel hopping algorithm is very simplistic (e.g., only try one other channel and if that is no better return to the original one. I'm jussayin..... So with that in mind it would be interesting to see if you could observe channel hopping in more congested areas. Maybe fly a short distance away but at high altitude and then descend to a height where you know will encounter WIFI interference and see if the channel changes. Also rather than just comparing the outbound channel to the inbound channel could you check for channel hopping on it's route...e.g., when you are descending in to the Wifi interference zone. Just a thought. Also have you checked for channel hopping on Mini 2 with Occusync 2.0? One would think you'd see channel hopping on Occusync 2.0. If you aren't seeing channel hopping there maybe your technique for measuring it is not accurate? Just a thought.

Cheers Ivan! How's the FCC hack working? Do you know maybe I am wrong ...I am sure I read somewhere the Mavic mini CE and FCC had different hardware and the FCC hack didn't do anything ? Just what I read months and months ago. Have you noticed a stronger connection?
@ivanjdrakov19573 жыл бұрын
@@GAVINHR yes, for the 5.8ghz channels I now feel the power hey! Yes you are correct, there are 2 different hardware models, but it's not the drone hardware that is different the drones are exactly the same, it's the RC the controller that has different hardware! The FCC model controller has only 5.8ghz channels, not even 1 of the 2.4ghz channels are available.. The CE model of the controller has no amplifier chip for the 5.8ghz band like the FCC model has.. Basically that's the difference, the controller for the USA model has an amplifier and 1W of Transmission power for the 5.8ghz channels, that's how they get their huge range with the FCC models while they have only 5.8ghz channels.. So I permanently FCC Hacked my controller and boy am I happy now! I have only 11 of the 2.4ghz channels, that's because in the USA channel 12 and 13 are not for public use, I think only for government and military services, that's why when we do the FCC Hack on our CE controllers/models we still get 2.4ghz channels but they ommit 12 and 13.. So yes the power is not 1W after the FCC Hack is done on the CE model RC, but the power of it doubles! So say it's 200mw or something the power for Europe for 5.8ghz channels, it boosts it to 400mw! I can feel a huge difference because I fly only 5.8ghz channels and I fly heavily wi-fi polluted areas.. Without the FCC Hack you can see in my videos at 350m, even though I use my homemade parabolic reflectors, I get really really bad lag sometimes, I'm afraid to fly to 500m altitude without the FCC Hack. But with the FCC Hack I can get over 1km with still perfect, full signal.. That is impossible without the FCC Hack.. They actually call it a Boost the developers of the hack exactly for that reason, it's not FCC power levels but it is boosted to double the power of normal.. It only affects the power of the 5.8ghz channels though and it removes channel 12 and 13.. So yeah, for you, I'm not sure how much 5.8ghz channel flights you do, but for me flying only on 5.8ghz this FCC Boost is really really essential.. I get very, smooth, fluid video transmission further than 1km easily, where usually I'd get 300m and crazy, scary lag... I prefer to fly with 5.8ghz almost everywhere, I know this way I'll have the best quality signal.. 📶👌👍🇧🇬🛸😁 Keep well and be safe bro!
