The more people play the same game (mechanically speaking) the more tricks and strategies they figure out they can do. For instance, look at Zelda OoT or Super Mario 64. When those games came out in the 90s, people were just taking baby steps to figure out how to get through the game. Nowadays, speed runners are showcasing all of the insane things their communities have figured out from several decades of playing this game and developing a deeper understanding of the mechanics. To OP's point, they were "bad", compared to today's standards. They didn't know jack about the game compared to what we know now. It's also pretty cool to see how far the game as come, it's not depressing or sad.

Back then, if you were fighting an opponent higher level than you, and you werent both wearing different team capes, you had to right click to attack them. Combined with no f keys, if you wanted to dds spec after a whip hit, you didn't have time to see what your whip hit. There were no xp drops. So it was either a blind whip hit into a right click attack dds spec, or you poked with dds once before speccing. It was horrendously bad 😂
