From what I understand, the armor can get such effective thickness because it is a cast turret. The game regards it as one piece of armor, and thus the game reads the "length" of it when you're looking at it from the front.

That’s because it’s volumetric, so it can find points where the LOS thickness is as thick as the entire length of the turret at points. The German version is one plate of a static thickness, it hasn’t been given the volumetric treatment yet.

Yeah, that's the Finnish KV-1 in a nutshell. If you get consistent downtiers to 4.0, it's not very bad on paper, but the moment you get up tiers to 6.0? Your goose is fucking cooked. Tiger 1s, Panthers, IS-2s, hell even the M4/T26, all of these vehicles can easily ignore your armor since they have 160mm+ of pen and are practically invulnerable from the front against anything you try to throw at them.

It is a cast turret variant, isn't it? It looks like in these turret cheek areas volumetric system simply shits the bed. Since casting is a single piece - it basically takes the whole length of a turret as thickness at certain angles.

Mr. OddBawZ sir I have something for you to try. I've been recently playing the Japan tree and I only have top tier Planes and low tier tanks. So when I wanted to play the japanese tanks I found something you might like, the Chi-Ha LG, a ww2 naval gun on a cart. So obviously I did what everyone would do and put my F-16J on my lineup with that tank. On the first game I killed an Abrams. And I'm not good, so I thought it would be fun to see someone who's better at Ground RB than I am try it and I would love to see it.

Literally in the same boat as you. I got the cherry blossom skin for the Japanese F16 from twitch drops a while back and it was such a nice camo I dropped all my other nations and grinded the Japanese air tree for like three months just to get it. I don’t use it though I suck at top tier air, it’s just a beautiful hangar Queen. Still haven’t unlocked my first Rank II Japanese ground vehicle 😅

Something that wasn't mentioned here, but that i noticed when i first looked at its armour. The hull MG. It just serves as extra armour on this tank, because there isn't a hole in the armour plate behind it for a machinegun to poke through. It is, for all intents and purposes, an armour plate with a wart that serves as more armour. This is unlike any other KV-1 in the game, by the way.

I know im late on this, but volumetric adds layers of armor together, so on a turret with variable armor, if you hit a corner where all 4 pieces meet, all 4 pieces armor thickness is added together for the penetration calculation. Even though in reality it is only as strong as the weakest plate. It also means if you line up like 2 or 3 pieces of armor on top of each other on a t34 or kv1 turret face, some of the armor thickness can exceed 500mm.

it's such a high thickness because it's simulating the turret side armor behind the turret frontal armor. Most tanks in WT just apply a thickness to a razor thin plane instead of an actual volumetric thickness.

This video was so huge for me! I shelled out for the German kv1 a while back hoping to use it to grind the German tree easier but gave up on it after just dying constantly while not accomplishing much. Recently I've given the tank another chance with the new goal of farming Lions cause I'm running short but I've still been having survivability issues. I would have never thought to angle as much as he was in the video cause the heaviest tanks I normally play are Sherman's with shit side armor. I'm normally getting cheek penned or the front plate penned since I'm only angling slightly. That 45ish degrees of angle he's holding though makes good use of that higher side armor the tank has while also making that driver hatch weak spot so much harder to hit. Hopefully I can start making great use of my kw1c now!

Yeah, armor is the same on the front as it is on the sides, so 45 degrees is the way to go! :) The KV-1 is one of the only tanks this is viable on.

I don't think the corner is a bug, it looks like it has a really tall turret ring that extends all the way up to the bottom of the mantlet. Tbh they should probably make the reload longer on it because Id wager it makes the turret insanely cramped. I'd feel sorry for it being at 5.0 if it wasn't in exactly the same boat as anyone facing it with a US 75mm or equivalent, any casual player that doesn't know that drivers port and next to the gun are its only weak spots is going to think its basically immortal and the zis-5 angle pen is enough to get through almost anything US in a downtier without having to even think

I play with 16 fps average and still cam get videos with 10 kills. I'm 42 and started playing 2 years ago after not playing games for 20 years. I have a great times playing, and sometimes annoying gameplay. It helps me though. My father has mental decline and I was needed to look after him. I play maybe 1-10 battles a day and it does help.

They doesn't lock a unique play style behind paywall, you can just play other tech-tree KV1 if you like it. People aren't mad because it's just a kv-1 or it's just a premium. People are (probably) mad because it does lock out a unique play style for a nation which could never rely on it's own armor. You can't even grind out any of the battle pass challenges that require a heavy tank without switching to a different nation. I don't know about other people, but I really enjoyed sweden because I was got to experience fighting all 3 of the major nations while also having fairly solid lineups. I don't particularly want to play another nation until 3.7-4.7 just to play a kv-1.

I agree, this KV-1 is an outstanding vehicle even at 5.0. It can kill pretty much anything at its BR and above in the hands of a skilled/experienced player. People who complain about it either A. Haven’t played it, or B. They’re so used to seal clubbing with Russia’s KV-1 that using one at a higher BR is a skill check they clearly aren’t passing.

I mean, I play the Russian KV-1E at 4.7 to 5.0 pretty consistently, and it's pain, but you can technically play it and still do well, taking hits even from tiger 1s and panthers with perfect play, but the KV-1E also has marginally better armour than the Swedish KV-1 M1942 from most angles at the cost of a worse gun, except the gun on both is abysmal at 5.0+. The KV-1E is a 3.0 Gun with 5.0 Armour, making it 4.0(Logical). This is a 3.3? Gun (Same as the premium Matilda, just about as good as the Chaffee's gun), with essentially the same armour, and now it's 5.0?? (KV-1E's Armour is spaced so has somewhat better HEAT protection and is also thicker on most of the sides by a few mil. (ignoring cast armour being trolly). Frontally its virtually the same except for the upper front plate which has an extra 100mm effective.) The issue though is that it has cast armour, which means you can't effectively angle the turret as easily because you will essentially always be showing some point frontally, which leads to it being easier to destroy if the enemy just points and shoots. Compare this to the KV-1E's applique volumetric hell and its not particularly better. This is also completely ignoring the fact that the KV-85 and KV-1C are also at 5.0, which are much better vehicles (mainly KV-1C, i'l accept the armour on the KV-85 is meh). Really it should be 4.7, KV-1 Zis5 and E/B should be 4.3.
