Gen Y represent! Thankfully I was old enough in the 1990s that I was more interested in music and boys to bypass most of these things. I did have a personal CD player at the end of the decade and my aunt had some minidiscs, but my mum and dad distracted me by giving me their record turntable in 1995, so I spent the decade looking the other way. Also, Amigas were the much better basic computers of the 1990s :). If it ain't broke, don't fix it, seems to have been forgotten by many of these techie people.

I have a Sony Walkman I bought on clearance at Walmart back in 2001. Still works really well. In fact it's outlived all other portable audio tape players I've owned before then - I'm a real butterfingers and drop them constantly. I also have a Sony CD player I bought at around the same time that works really well, too. I can go out for walks listening to it, and it only skips a few times! Lol

+loneshewolf74 I got a Sony Psyc Walkman for about $2.00 back at one of our village-wide garage sales. Still have it to this day, in fact. It plays beautifully, and _does not skip_.

TamaGotchis were rather one dimensional, especially in the 90's, but getting a specific digimon could be done without much effort other than a little tedium. The most powerful champion, for instance, can be obtained with "9+ sleep disturbances." As in, flicking on and off the lights while your Betamon is sleeping. Of course most kids at the time didn't KNOW this, and were too busy trading secret codes to get "Flaming Teddymon" or the two-headed dragon thing, or for those interested in getting one that actually exists, training the fuck out their Agumon. But the thing is, once you figured it out it was exploitable. There were no major penalties back then for overfeeding like there were in TamaGotchis, the only way to seriously fuck your lil digipal up was by starving it, not cleaning up after it, losing battles, that sort of thing. It was built as a "boy's TamaGotchi" so the focus moved away from obsessive parenting and more towards the battling aspect. The only way to get an ultimate digimon was with a 60% or higher win ratio. I was never annoyed by Digimon like Tamagotchis or other things, especially since the times it did call were mostly when I was expecting it, you need 4+ calls for a Betamon and I WOULD NOT have an Agumon! I wouldn't have it! ...and you know you can just pause them, right? Also Giga Pets were fucking weak ass bullshit. The whole point of virtual pets is to evolve them based on how you treat them, but Giga Pets didn't do that at all, so... what's the point?

I had probably four or five different portable CD players. One was stolen out of our family car along with the Forrest Gump soundtrack and all our Hank Williams CDs haha. I never used them walking, just riding on trips to the city or whatever. It wouldn't skip so bad if it was on your lap and not jostling around your jacket pocket.

The thing is pogs still exist here in Latin America but we call them by a different name call "Tarsos" but we play them differently where we slam them one at a time against each other since we don't have "slammers" and we wouldn't buy them in a pack we would get them in chips bags and they are based on cartoon characters like Pokemon and they still exist up to recently

I don't know why the hate the soda may have had on it 'cause Classic Coca Cola (and later Coke Zero as well) already has a hint of vanilla in its' syrup. The only thing Vanilla Coke had was an INTENSIFIED TASTE. But try that with Pepsi or New Coke / Diet Coke, which doesn't have any vanilla on their regular versions and it'd taste SLIGHTLY WEIRD (vanilla and citrus doesn't blend well in Pepsi's case...).

Surge was a big deal about two years ago when it started to be sold around here again. My younger friend drank so much of it, I was told he had to go to the hospital because of complications of drinking it too much. Personally, I find it much more sugary than I remember, way too sugary for my taste. I used a crappy bulky cassette walkman until 2008 (there were plenty of blank tapes lying around the house, just taped songs off the tv or radio) along with your standard car/portable Sony walkman that skipped if I walked up a steep hill.

I still have a 1990-ish Sanyo pseudo-Walkman (with Mega-Bass!) that I hook up to my computer speakers as it is the sole thing I have left that plays cassettes (which gets very interesting when the batteries are weak and I get, say, TMBG or The Minutemen at slow speed ... ).

Nunnayah Beeswax One typeof CD player that _did_ skip like a Goddamn sonofabitch were MP3 CD players with MP3 CDs. I used to have one that played both MP3s and WMAs (remember WMAs?) a light walk would have the thing buffering non-stop. Looking at it wrong would make it fall silent and spin up over and over again.

Sony's big problem with the MiniDisc is that they never really opened the format the way the CD was. With CD, you had CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW and the requisite burners, same with DVD and their writable anbd rewritable formats. But Sony wanted the Mini Disc to be strictly for music only, never even releasing MD drives for PCs or even hinting at the possibility of using MiniDiscs for data. Oh yes and the only software that could talk to the MiniDisc player at all on a PC (Mac users were SOL) was Sony's own SoundStage which apparently wasn't as user friendly or popular as iTunes or the plethora of software that could burn to CD or the fact that you could rip a CD to MP3 and just drag and drop the files to a hard disk or memory card based generic MP3 player.
@jameslaidler4259
@jameslaidler4259 9 жыл бұрын
GeoNeilUK Yes it was a rather clunky format. Was typical of Sony at all times, the corporate stuffed shirts dictated what the engineers could and couldn't do. Another extremely clever idea mangled and ruined by proprietary bull. However MD enjoyed greater success in it's native Japan and Europe, The UK etc. Hi-MD was a good idea though, but also ham stringed by Sony's corporate bull.
@sublight
@sublight 8 жыл бұрын
+James Laidler One thing that made the MD popular in Japan in the 90s was that video stores (remember those?) there also rented music CDs, so the "get the CD, burn it to MD" idea didn't seem nearly as counter-intuitive as it would if you had to buy the CD first. Once MP3 players made it unnecessary to store your music on anything but a hard drive, the MD was done.
@GeoNeilUK
@GeoNeilUK 8 жыл бұрын
sublight "Once MP3 players made it unnecessary to store your music on anything but a hard drive, the MD was done." Because MicroSD cards have never taken off. The MiniDisc format could have been a forerunner to the memory card, I even remember (and actually possessed) MP3 players that came with an SD card slot. They'd show up as 2 drives, one for the internal memory and one for the memory card. Then you had the various SD, MMC, Mini SD, Mini MMC and Transflash formats used by different mobile phones (and Sony Ericsson's nasty case of NIHS and their insistence of the various Memory Stick formats) The reason why MP3 players succeeded where MiniDisc players failed IMHO was that MP3 players were just USB sticks with built-in music playing hardware and other optional features.

The problem is that you were supposed to shake the bottle / can (comes in both, it was bottles only in my neck of the woods) 'cause Orangina has some real orange juice (I didn't say it was quality one), but you're not supposed to shake it 'cause it's CARBONATED and you'd get a WASHFUL of it in your face. That's the paradox there...
