8:18 That "Don Rickles" knock off is Joe Garagiola. This must have been during his peak of fame. He was originally an baseball catcher for multiple teams. In the late '60s and until the early '80s he was a host for a bunch of game shows including He Said She Said, Sale of the Century, To Tell The Truth, etc. From the '60s until the late '70s he did a ton of commercials.

Never forget, characters like Ron Burgundy, Kent Brockman, and Vernon from the original TMNT cartoon didn't come out of nowhere. Cal Worthington will never cease to amaze me for one reason. The West Coast writers of various cartoons, TV Shows, and movies will always make references to those commercials, causing us on the East Coast to scratch our heads and say "is this a reference to something?"

Ah, but we ALL know of local business owners who did their own wild TV ads... I dare anyone from Southern Ontario in the last 40 years or so not to join yelling either NOOOOOBODY!!!! or OHHH YYEAHH!!!! (...everyone else online: "Yeah, so...?")

If you're not familiar with some region's local commercials, it comes off as an inside joke. If I were to make a general parody of local commercials, you'd get it without having the knowledge of what I'm referencing. Yet, if I were to include very specific bits, it would come off as confusing and only for the audience I know will get it. I didn't even know Cal Worthington was a thing until someone pointed it out to me.

@@mightyfilm Exactly, and some were before our times. For example, check out Earl "Madman" Muntz. I saw his logo on 8-tracks for years before finding out he was a car salesman, or his historic connection to the tape format's development (via NAB carts to his 4-track).

I live on the East Coast, and for the longest time, I only thought K4K was a radio jingle. It wasn't until maybe 2 years into having cable I saw the horrors of the actual television version. I'd expect SNL to make a reference to it, as they did, but the used it in Family Guy as the song Peter lost his virginity to.

Been a fan for years and finally subbed. If I may make a suggestion for an episode I'd highly suggest Kermit Schaffer. He was a famous archiver of mostly bloopers. He released a bunch of LPs and books from the 50's until the late '70s about the subject but the LPs were particularly odd in the fact that some of the "bloopers" were recreated by actors. My guess for him doing this was not to get sued by the networks as fair-use was not a legal yet. After his death around 1980 Dick Clark got most of his collection and it evolved in to TV Bloopers and Practical Jokes.

I love gag reals. The father of a high school friend of mine worked for a local TV station and had some great stuff. My fave was a 70s era gag real where the most news anchory news anchor you can imagine stands up from his desk and says his name and "by God I'm a newsman" while ripping open his shirt to reveal his bare torso.

I remember Ralph Williams Chrysler Plymouth when I was a kid in the Northwest in the late sixties. Totally made me laugh cuz we even knew back then what a shyster he was without ever having seen these fantastic commercials gag reels of his before. And what a fantastic bit of trivia to find out why Cal Worthington's dog is named spot, fantastic stuff! 👍

"willful buffoonery" ..very accurate. Gag/blooper reels are absolute gold. I've seen a ton of them over the years (and been in a few, too..) They're becoming rare these days, at least in part because everything is so instantaneous now.. bloopers and fails make the social media rounds before anyone can actually edit them together anymore.

An idea if you ever do a part 2 of Gag Reels. I recently saw the BBC Christmas tapes which were in house blooper reels which were based off the more profane ITV Christmas tapes. Neither of which were meant to be seen by the public. Not many people have covered them yet to my knowledge and would be up your alley imho.

I've seen those before. The first three years Ben would only be able to use select clips (because there are a ton of T&A in those gag reels) but I think the one he'd be interested in would specifically be Kevin's New Job (from 1984). In that it's about a new techie that works for the BBC there are a ton of A/V jokes and references. It's like an episode of the oddity archive pre-Ben.

There's also the take where the red Dodge rolls backwards. "You've got the perfect look for our Dart commercial. Can you drive a stick?" "...uh...yes!" Also, commercials in the 1970s...nothing sells a car like unlikable people avoiding responsibility! And yeah, when you say the Chrysler video goes off the rails at the end...it's an understatement. You've actually edited some of it to be less choppy.

OK, Ben... As a PUERTORRICAN I should easily recognize Juan (Chi-Chi) Rodríguez (the one that "fenced" golf clubs like a sword as his signature move), our most famous professional golfer, but the one in the "interview" (8:19) with a "pissed off" Joe Garagiola (yes, "I'm old enough" to recognize him at a glance) and the ditty inside the car (he didn't mind the off-colored RACIST JOKE at 8:42 in it) was with famed Mexican-American professional golfer (and a "clown in a polo" at times) Lee Treviño (yes, his last name has the "tilde" on top of the "n" not used in English).

I love gag reels, I love seeing actors, reporters, and commercial spokespersons just being themselves reacting to a mistake they made or an incident that shouldn't have happened, though the clips involving the late Sam Donaldson were, at best, cringeworthy, recently, I have read somewhere on social media, that gag reels from the TV shows of the last 21 years or more, are not really bloopers at all, just added bonuses to put on DVDs for the fans' enjoyment ( if true, that would be a great disappointment).

Gag reels... is this going to include what the British TV industry referred to as "Christmas Tapes"? Where the VT department would gather together a collection of outtakes and foul ups and off colour comedy sketches that would involved children's TV characters swearing at Jim Davidson (a natural reaction to encountering Jim Davidson) I think it got to the point that whenever a TV host screwed up, they'd immediately say "Merry Christmas VT!" in acknowledgement that they'd probably end up in that year's Christmas Tape.
