I remember those Cats PSA's. Cats was a big thing in the 80s. It seemed every high school and amateur theater company did their own version. And probably all of them were still better than the 2019 movie. Also, who better than Rod Serling to narrate a PSA because at least you could take him seriously.

Sometime in the mid-00's Sesame Street wanted to have a focus on healthy eating, and there was this sketch where Hoots the Owl sang to Cookie Monster about "sometimes foods." And immediately the internet went freaking nuts, and being the internet, the reactionaries failed to do any research into the fact that Cookie Monster did indeed talk about healthier eating options. There was a song he did in the 80's that was a parody of the Run DMC version of Walk this Way about Healthy Food. But yeah. So basically, Sesame Street had to go on the defensive saying that Cookie still eats cookies right down to making an actual episode about it and having Cookie appear on talk shows saying how he's still Cookie Monster on various levels of salty. And as us Muppet/Sesame Street fans are well aware of, Cookie Monster eats EVERYTHING. I guess no one was concerned when he ate plates, foam rubber letters and numbers, an actual truck, and in one anniversary special, everything on Sesame Street BUT a cake.

As a Muppet fan, I hate when the normies get upset over like one thing that somehow makes the news. And it's not even like this was a new concept. Back when The Count first appeared, some whackjob kept mailing Children's Television Workshop because they thought it was brainwashing kids to accept Satan or evil or some nonsense. I'm surprised no one got on Cookie Monster's case about him eating a whole truck or something, as if it's an imitable act.

I actually knew about Randall's advocacy for myasthenia gravis sufferers! I was doing some research on him last year while attempting to find the in-character 1974 Odd Couple ads for "Challenge Yahtzee" (I was unable to), and as part of this I read through his New York Times obituary, which says in part: "During this same period, he became national chairman of the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation, a post he occupied for some 30 years. Myasthenia gravis is an incurable neuromuscular disease that incapitates its victims and kills them. He was a compassionate man who detested maudlin pronouncements of any kind and so when he was asked why he became involved with the foundation, he replied, "My agent told me I needed a disease."" So there you go!

The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers. -Socrates. So basically... people have been complaining about how terrible the "youth of today" are since the beginning of humanity most likely.

That 50th anniversary for Smokey PSA is certainly one of the best there is. First of all, it's a live action and animation hybrid. In the ad, he realizes that being hip and with it isn't how you deliver a message. This ultimately means that Smokey kept his dignity in tact. And to top it all off, this was during a time when he was voiced by Jim Cummings, one of the greatest voice actors of all time.

That McGruff song was part of a full (non music) video starring Drew Barrymore, probably around the time she went to rehab, and is all about a group of kids making the worst's dumbest drug PSA music video. The whole video is all about not doing drugs and not once do they specify which drugs not to use and that some are safe. But they made every kid think that shady, leather clad teenagers were lurking around every street corner and basketball court just waiting for little kids to come by so they could pressure them into taking drugs.

I think these lame PSAs (Public Service Announcements) versus the horror films that we British call PIFs (Public Information Films) are why more and more parts of legalising cannabis while the UK aren't and why I see so many clips of Americans falling out of their cars, blind drunk, convinced they're good to drive, while we in the UK take drunk driving _extremely seriously._ Stories Untold is a British game that very much addresses that, and I remember getting annoyed at an American feminist saying "if she's too drunk to drive, she's too drunk to consent!" because our drink driving limit is broken by a single pint of lager, so by British standards a girl is too drunk to consent before she even gets a beer buzz!

That was hilarious, the late 80s, early 90s rap - good lord we had heaps of crappy rapped up ads here in NZ around the whole 1989/91 period. Have you seen that 1989 Wendys Burger making video - hilarious - "Meat"s got grain just like wood, but you have to grill it down to make it taste good"

Ah, Mr. Yuk! I tried to do a commentary video about that PSA when I was much younger. I’ve since deleted it because it was pretty embarrassing, but I do have fond memories of making it! Anyways, great video, Ben!

The "Do you know where your children are?" PSA is another thing that I've heard people referencing for years without actually having seen the source material. Until now. What can I say, I've been living under a huge, California-shaped rock.

I really don't know if Danny Elfman did drugs or not. On one end while in Oingo Boingo he made some great music including the theme to Weird Science and went on to be one of the greatest minds in music with his contribution to countless movies and work on The Simpsons. On the other hand he did once create a song (which includes a music video) where he revealed to the world how he loves little girls and they make him feel so good.

Because the word "retarded" has been offensive in the UK for longer than the US, it's always jarring to hear it. "Spastic" is another taboo word here too, probably because it was used as an insult in the playground. We're still in fear of being killed by a slippy floor though too.

In the US now retarded will get you called out if you use it but spastic here is still meaningless. Like at most it's the most mild of joking insults, it's the kind of thing a mom would say to her kids "stop acting so spastic." It really doesn't have any baggage here in the States.

The drug music videos probably would have had the opposite effect on me if I was a teenager in the 80s and 90s. Plus, who wants to be a normie DARE square? I'm sure you would have fun with the anti-drug and workplace safety films from the 60s up to the 90s, like the Sonny Bono marijuana scare film, Killing Time (a 90s railway safety film), and Shake Hands with Danger (a construction safety film sponsored by Caterpillar).
