Maybe actually show cal city. I grew up there being my parents were military at Edwards afb. Lived on north loop and also lewis ave. Went to elementary and up to 7th grade before we moved to japan. We still have alot of friends who live and call cal city home. Alls you showed was the expansion that never happend.

OH boy.... I lived in CalCIty for 10 years... I'm going to echo what a few others have said. This was entirely disrespectful and rude. First, there are PLENTY of paved roads in CalCity. 1. Galileo Park??? WTF??? Oh, guys, no, that's not the 'hub' of anything. 2. Well, at least you started with Mr. Mendelson, so that's good. 3. The bouncing around is driving me nuts... Central park to Silver Saddle and then back to the golf course? Yes, it's a real golf course and it's open. OH wait... The one you filmed isn't the golf course. You were out at Silver Saddle and that was the old mini golf spot. You were at the lake... so why not film the ACTUAL golf course there?? Yes, there's a whole, real golf course in CalCity, and people actually use it. Okay, I've subscribed to you guys for years. This video ticked me off. It doesn't tell you ANYTHING about the town except some vague information about the beginning and then you bounce around the far outskirts and don't show the town itself and you missed all of the current legal drama and who lives and visits here. You literally drove 45 miles out of town to Silver Saddle and pretended like that was the main part of town. 45 miles!!!!!! That's super deceptive of you. When I say there's small town drama out there.... it's D R A M A. You skipped over the private prison opening (and closing). You skipped all of the medical mj farms...and the smell. You skipped the city government run by criminals.... no, actual convicted criminals. Michael K... I'm looking at you. Yes, those are fact, feel free to research them yourself. You showed a shot of those billboards leading out of town, but didn't address what they mean. Do you even know??? They were erected by the mother of a woman who was found murdered in Central Park. Her name was Deverrie Schiller, and her murder is still unsolved. Though a few have been closed, for a while there was a LOT of open, cold murder cases. Several still are open, like Deverrie's. You could have at least search the names on those billboards. That's a sensitive issue for many in town and you guys were just making fun. The town used to have a lot of military families from Edwards AFB living there. Though many of them are now back on base. BUt still, many military and aerospace workers live there. They work out of Edwards AFB, China Lake, Mojave Air and Space Port... and even Area 51. Lots oa really great people... and some not so great people, like any town, I suppose. The area is also majorly popular with off roaders. Burning Man has a regional event there, and they have this awesome event called Wasteland Weekend. I've never attended the event itself, but the art cars and contraptions that come through town are quite a show. I don't live there anymore, but I have many friends and family there still. The politics of CalCity are horrible, and always have been. But a lot of good people live there. A lot of bad, too, unfortunately. This video doesn't tell you anything about the town and just makes fun of it being out in the desert. C'mon. You can do better. And I know you were in town because you filmed at the lake, and it takes some effort to get to that spot, driving through an established neighborhood. But based on what I saw you film, you only stayed on the east side of town. You didn't really go past the park, did you? You said there's a hotel and bar there.... wow. There's also a Starbucks, a terrible McDonalds, a RiteAid, several gas stations, 500 Mexican restaurants (a local joke that will go right over your head), two viciously competing pizza joints, an amazing Chinese food spot, a Dollar General Market --- though they desperately need a real full service grocery storeThe nearest one is in Mojave 30 minutes away, but DG is good for the basics. And so much more. Yeah the town has plenty of issues and parts of it are run down thanks to horrible city government policies... but you didn't address any of that. It's like you didn't even try. *Actually, I take that back. You actually DID try, and drove way out of your way (45 miles) to a closed/abandoned area, insinuating that it's the center of town, when it isn't, and never was. That makes this even more ridiculous because you had to work to get out there to get the shots of the dirt roads and the closed dude ranch. You also didn't bother to mention the Desert Tortoise Preserve, which is a shame since you had to have driven past those signs. Finally, the sheep are a common sight out there. They are part of a managed herd, used for weed control. They aren't lost.

@@trexinvert It's not a terrible town... but it's not for everyone, and the city infrastructure is terrible. They aren't managed well and there are a lot of special interests. It's really frustrating. It's just that as someone who did live there, it's actually insulting to see how they actually went out of their way (literally) to avoid showing the town itself. The stayed on the outskirts and drove...no joke... FORTY FIVE miles out into the desert, away from the main part of town, to show a property that is closed and part of an active legal case with the federal government. A lot of people who live in CalCity have never even been to Galileo Hill/Silver Spur. LOL. Then the video just makes fun of the area. I get it, but what they did was an insult -- even condescending with tier urban LA city attitude, making fund of the city as they show billboards about missing/murdered residents.

I’m glad you took the time to expand and critique this video. I lived for many years in Victorville so I know desert living. California City is fascinating to me. This video was disappointing, but hey, it’s KZbin. When ever I have a “suggestion “ at work someone will say, good idea when will you be doing that. California City became way more successful than I would have ever imagined. My Dad took us on vacation in 1976/ 77 to visit family in Arizona, and on the way we stopped in California City. A local Investment Broker had invested in California City and was soliciting clients to consider investing. After seeing what little infrastructure and residents existed in California City my Dad declined to invest.

I was born at Edwards in 66 and grew up in Cal City. I remember the Central park, swimming pool, paddle boats. Strip Mall with movie theater, bowling ally, restaurants, It was very well taken care of. My Dad was the airport manager at that time so I spent most my time out there. Many people would come to get away from the Big city to RV camp, ride motorcycles, go skydiving. I watched the ups and downs of City Finances vs Investment. I have a good memories of the place but sadly I couldnt see it ever coming back so sold my last property there.

My parents bought property in California in the late 60s. All I knew about it was that they didn't know it would be a bust. On a road trip in the mid-80s, my brother showed me the marked parcel that they purchased. I visited the place again in the early 2000s as a stop while going to Barstow. Not much was left to see or find the parcel.

My friend Bill Cooper, who died two years ago, had a skydiving business out there. He used the airport for his planes. He joined the city council not because he believed in Cal City but because he wanted to continue using the airport for his skydiving business. He had stories that would curl my hair. He never invested in buildable lots even though he was a licensed Real estate agent, which tells me a lot about the investment value of Cal City.

I know a number of people that live in California City. Almost all work at Edwards AFB, just across the freeway from Cal City. The airport was mostly used for Civilians frying in from out of state to visit or work at the Base, really nice restaurant there too. There's a North South street in Cal City named "Neuraila Rd." (New-Rail-Ya) so named by the Southern Pacif Railroad around 1900, a water stop for the steam engines headed toward Lone Pine to haul water pipe for the Los Angeles Aqueduct. There was also a very popular Holiday Inn by the Lake, the AF base used it a lot for special events. One of the Downfalls of Cal City is the Base, there are frequent layoffs that effect the housing market.
@InternetJury
@InternetJury 6 күн бұрын
Exactly, and when the base demolished and rebuilt all of the base housing, that had an impact, too. Most of the active duty AF families now stay on the base because the housing is nicer, newer and closer to work. There are a lot of retired military out there. My uncle used to fly gliders out of the airport there. The area was super popular with gliders and sail planes. Unfortunately, local city management has really run the place into the ground. The airport is now mostly a hub for the mj farmers. There are TONS of mmj farms out there now.

I remember the desolation we drove through from our home near San Bernardino to get to the Potemkin village that MERBISC had set up to sell their promises to the earnest rubes - like my family - trying to get ahead away from the smog. The brochures spoke breathlessly of the potential growth that would parallel an expansion of the Palmdale airport. It was only after our second visit, long after the first, that I realized my dad was about to invest our meager savings in this desert version of Florida swamp land. Even with today’s extreme real estate prices, no sane person would live there. #AbsoluteHumanFollySinceICanRemember

A bus ride out of the LA area (about 2 hours) brought you out and as you got off the bus you were greeting by salesmen. I think we were served lunch, we were shown a lot of what the future plans were for California City and then people broke off for one on one time with a salesman. If I remember correctly it was $7500 for a lot. It seemed impressive as all the streets were graded, signs, etc. If you decided not to purchase you got back on the bus back to LA. If you did purchase you got a ride back with the salesman in his air conditioned Cadillac. I stayed at the Best Western about 5 years ago and took a tour through the town... what a dead city. Too bad.

Right? It's as if they purposefully avoided showing the town itself. They literally drove way up north to Silver Saddle and along the northeastern outskirts to get the drone footage of the dirt roads. They called Galileo the 'hub' which it most definitely isn't. I mean, most people who live in CalCity have never even been up that way, it's so far out. Also, that property is under receivership, as there are still pending criminal charges against the owner and salespeople who were running a scam until just a couple of years ago. I mean, the levels of history and corruption as well as highlights of the good people and things could be many episodes long, not a 8-minute piece where the LA snobbery and disdain is evident. It's annoying that those of us who know the area can see they purposefully avoided showing the actual town and instead decided to be pretentious and condescending about it, if not outright deceptive. What's worse is that they went to the lake at Central Park, which means they had to drive at least a little bit into town and through an actual neighborhood to get there. And all they mentioned is that the town has a hotel and a bar. 🙄

I know right? I was hoping for a bit more of Cal City in the Cal City video despite its main attraction being the plotted lands and streets that are empty...

There are big desert grids like this in other places too. Northwest of Albuquerque,NM, East of El Paso TX, West of Kingman AZ, and more. I made a short vid using Google Earth images on my YT channel a few years ago that no one saw. You might check out these other grids.

This is the most I've seen about it, and I'm just going off some vague things I'd heard throughout my life, so I really don't know, and I'm speculating here, but I'm pretty sure that my grandfather had been one of those salesman who got family and friends to invest, they lost everything, and it resulted in my grandparents getting divorced over how disgusted my grandmother was with him. For the rest of her life, she couldn't stand being in the same room with him. That and supposedly there were streets there named after my mother and aunts.

You told us very little about Cal City, and showed us even less. This could be the worlds shortest video: What's in it? Here's a place, but we aren't going to show it to you. Some stuff obviously happened. We aren't going to tell you what. 11,000 people live here, but why talk to them? Compared to us, for example, they were uninteresting small town stiffs. Why bother making this??? Let alone watching it.... Get an editor, please.

Beautiful. Just beautiful. But you didn’t cover all of. Just the outskirts and the dude ranch. Never been there. But I have heard of it and seen videos on it. It is a beautiful city despite its flaws and one of my favorite cities in California. 😊

Check out Eagle Mountain, to the south. A whole huge company mining town, abandoned. Several hundred houses, stores, public spaces - even an airport. Someone bought it recently, and is based in the old high school now, doing something or other. A modern mystery. Sounds like your thing. North of Desert Center, where 177 meets Hwy. 10.

Not quite certain of its validity as it could just be local folklore down here in Acton, but rumor had it that Mike Tyson owned a significant 'grow' facility in Cal City.
@InternetJury
@InternetJury 5 күн бұрын
He broke ground on it... so it's not a rumor. There are photographs of it with the mayor and everything. I believe they are still working on it. It's part of the Tyson Ranch... and he also has one in Desert Hot Springs. I've heard various things about whether it's actually moving forward or not... but it was supposed to be a resort/Ranch destination where they have a grow op, but also where people could take classes or something.
