For anyone in the US or Canada wanting to learn more about the Brooklyn Americans, be sure to check out 'Only The Dead Know The Brooklyn Americans': it's a documentary based around the team and the inspiration for this video!

Thank you. The home rink of my son's hockey team, the Springbank Rockies, is Red Dutton here in Calgary, Alberta. Having heard about how the NHL betrayed Mr. Dutton, I also cheer against the NY Rangers.

Once the war had ended, Red Dutton actually resigned the NHL presidency so he could pursue a team in Brooklyn. It soon became obvious that it wasn't going to happen, especially since Rangers management didn't want another team in their area, so Dutton went back to western Canada to continue with the construction business. He actually never set foot in an NHL arena again until being asked to do a ceremonial puck drop prior to the first game for the Calgary Flames in 1980 since their relocation from Atlanta. Dutton was there as the last surviving member of the Calgary Tigers of the Western Canada Hockey League.

During their last season, despite their last place finish, one of their forwards, Tom Anderson, actually won the Hart Trophy as MVP, so at least there was that. Also, within their last couple of seasons, they had a young up-and-coming goaltender named Chuck Rayner. He would have his better years after the war with the Rangers.

There really needs to be a book written about this franchise giving more detail. I'll have to look up the documentary you mentioned.

Maybe if the Brooklyn Americans survived, the rivalry between the New York Rangers and the Brooklyn Americans would be known as "The Battle Of Broadway," and be one of the most bitter and remembered rivalry in the NHL.

The story goes that Red Dutton tried to revive the Americans in 1946, but the league, with some persuasion from Rangers' management, broke their promise. Red Dutton then declared "as long as I am alive, the Rangers will never win the Stanley Cup!" Well, he died in March of 1987, and the Rangers wouldn't win another Cup until 7 years and 3 months later!

Big Bill Dwyer insisted the Montreal Canadians be the first team they play against. He had seen Morenz play in Montreal, convinced him this could be done. He knew Howie and Eddie Shore packed the barns, sell-outs. The pre game opening was an event. Owners of the M.S.G also promised not to field a competing team. They saw the revenue and renegaded on the promise... thus the NY Rangers were founded ... dirty dogs lol.

Could you make a video where you owned the NHL during the ‘67 expansion and what you would have done with the team?

Imagine you were in charge of the NHL during the expansion period. What would you have done differently? (ex. Team names and locations)
