Oddworld: Soulstorm Review - The Final Verdict

Oddworld: Soulstorm ends up being a very good and very compelling game, that legitimately threatens to be an all time classic so often, you can't help but be angry at it for not following through. That it stumbles where and when it does does not in the slightest take away from all that the game achieves, and just how well it achieves it, of course, and Soulstorm is without a doubt the best and most welcoming game in the series, not to mention the best rounded out one.
And honestly, the fact that most of my frustrations from the game stem from it not managing to be utterly sublime all the time should, more than anything else, speak volumes about the quality of the core game, when it's firing on all cylinders.

Honestly, I understand that they had to and wanted to expand on the Abe formula... but as soon as I saw all the crafting and menu's I was like ''this seems... unnecessary''. I actually like that the Abe games basically had 0 UI at all. Everything you needed to know was visible in the background, on abe or in the environment. I'm still absolutely playing this, especially now that I got it free, but I was kinda let down at first sight of all this. I do still love the Oddworld world and I think the very open but full-of-humor criticism towards capitalism is tastefully executed :p I love it.

the crafting is quite good actually. I also hated the idea but ended up enjoying it. Being able to craft items means that you can go through the same puzzles in many different ways, and that's a plus.

I am playing on PS5 and it is a good game. Not amazing but a solid 7 out of 10 for me. I can only play it in short bursts it can get frustrating at points and a little repeatitive visually.

@@rayromano6249 well considering not enough effort has gone into getting the characters pronounced correctly makes me wonder how much effort has gone into the finer details of the game to provide a decent review. Its not a big ask, we're not asking them to explain in precise detail how they modelled abe graphically. Especially when the game is basically a remake/remaster makes me curious if a reviewer has even played the older titles or read into the back story to see if the new game is worth it in comparison to old. It would be like someone reviewing duke nukem and referring to the guy as doke nukem....makes you wonder if they even paid enough attention to the game if they cant get a simple thing like the name right

While I still prefer the original Abe's Oddysee & Exoddus, I will admit this is a good game if you don't let your nostalgia goggles blind you and take it for what it is. I'm actually glad they decided to do a total reimagining of Exoddus rather than just doing a full on remake with updated graphics like they did with New 'n' Tasty for Oddysee. It makes the game stand out more as its own thing and gives a bunch of totally new levels to experience rather than rehashing the old ones again.

Even WITH nostalgia goggles that I sometimes felt like I had on, this game still manages to hit that Oddworld feeling with its cutscenes and general aesthetic. It manages to feel like its own new Oddworld game.

@@Snozzer Yeah I agree it definitely had a better Oddworld feel than Munch’s Oddysee did for instance, which I thought had incredibly underwhelming environments and too much slapstick humor compared to the much more uniquely bizarre aesthetics and darker tone of the previous games.

I'm not a fan of the series,in fact this is my first game,thanks to it i knew the series and understand why you love this series so much, but i'm not here to idolizing the game despite my enjoyment,but with the new crafting system(with stealth and attack moves),the new quarma system(if you kill sligs you get bad quarma but of course this is your free choice to kill them or not) and the mudokons became new reactive to the speaker(that has less codes and two new on right and left were you can change their behavior,more or less like exoddus with emotions, and arm them) make the game more strategic,my question is that i just don't see why some people tend to underrated this game without noticing this features, because it seems they didn't even played it, the total(considering google) is 86% who like it and 11% don't

At least your patience is test on the part you're failing on and that alone thanks to numerous checkpoints. I only had a few sections I had to do numerous times to save everyone but I didn't feel overly frustrated as the checkpoint put me right back where I wanted to be. Loved the game despite the mild jank

I've tried to have patience with it, and I like a challenge, but normal mode is more like nightmare mode as far as I'm concerned. I have patience for it up to a point, even when I'm tested a bit, but some parts of some levels are just absolute b/s with the difficulty. So in actual fact I think the reviewer isn't being entirely honest, because those parts of the game where you want to break your controller aren't even touched upon in this review. A true review should go over all the pros and cons. The graphics are fantastic and it's a great game otherwise, but I would expect the kind of difficulty of this game's "normal" mode to be on a harder mode instead.

I still play those games atleast once a year from beginning to end and still enjoy a lot. I looked forward to New n Tasty when it came out and the stupid mechanics and slow movements of Abe made me walk away from that game and and I don’t know if this game has those same problems as New N Tasty did

Just downloaded to xbox and so far loving it. Very dubious about the crafting though. Seems unnecessary, and the graphics of New N Tasty were, in my opinion, better than Soulstorm. Soulstorm seems to have an IG beauty filter on. Just my opinion though but all in all, definitely not disappointed so far and cannot wait to progress further! Long live Abe! 🥰

I had to redo a whole level. I quit at the last checkpoint in a level and when I played again I was at the first checkpoint. Also I clipped out of bounds and fell through the level multiple times. Might have actually discovered a few out of boundaries level teleports if I can duplicate it for speedrunning. Still my game of the year tho

After playing through the game from start to finish recently my main grips have been the protecting the mudokons as they climb which are sections i didnt persoanlly like. Also the no quicksave option unlike some of the other games, the check point system is fine but having to track back to a previous check point to reuse it was a little annoying. Other than those gripes I enjoyed the game but not gonna smack down oddworld for trying something different. Also would have liked a few more comedy moments sprinkled in.

That crane at The Yards is fucking bullshit! They also shoulda brought back QUICKSAVE! The flying sligs with shotguns also never spawned. I googled a walk-through after about 3 hours of failures to find that out. This game seems more tedious than fun a lot of the time PERSONALLY!

The crafting would be fine if when you died you didn't have to re-scavenge every...single...time. The fact your items do not carry over from level to level kinda exemplifies this problem. I overall like the idea of using tools, and Glukkon products against the oppressors. Though I think just having the vendo machines or stuff laying around the areas that would require the items aa a puzzle piece was a better implementation in the older games

It's amazing and has an original concept in gaming, if you haven't play any of the Oddworld games, I suggest you play it's predecessor "New 'n' Tasty", because it's a remake for the first Oddworld game, this one is the sequel to that game.

The world is really something great. It’s a shame that parts of this game are so atrociously designed and horrible to get through. Some spots are just frustrating, repetitive and dated, basic character dodging things gameplay that you have to die through in order to see all the patterns to get past. It’s so mind numbingly boring to have to navigate through hazard patterns again and again and again. I love the story and lore and world design but the gameplay is spoilt by the terrible sections. Good ideas but pointlessly difficult spots that’ll make you hate it in those moments. When it’s at its best it approaches 9/10 but at its worst you’ll want to break controllers. Tons to like though.

More like on the Switch or PC. As far as i know the Oddworld series has never arrived at Xbox. And even if they did, the Switch's Touch Screen (Handheld) and Gyro controls (in Dock), and the PC's mouse can really help with the crafting and aiming elements of the gameplay. And the Graphics are basically New-n-Tasty's so the Switch can run this game as it did with that game

My personal verdict is that this game is harder than dark souls, I hate this game, I genuinely hate this game, A review of dark souls is that it’s hard but never unfair, this game is hard and unfair later in the game(phat station has been deemed impossible, the game gets repetitive and long by that point, I just gave up in the middle, the only bad part of the game is the fact that 100%ing this game seems impossible due to mudokon stupidity and the fact that repetitiveness due to long levels(way too long, I just want to be done with it, and I’m not, instead I’m dying again then again then again then more times, then uh oh I’ve falled down back to the beginning of this last part of the level and now have to repeat the difficult part again, and again and AGAIN, then I get through, and discover an area which looks like another area so I go back discover it’s not the same area and then go back and discover another difference and discover it’s the first area of that area but 100x harder Phat station is too difficult, too long, and too unfair, probably most of the future levels too, I’m never playing it again, it won’t ever be worth it

For its price point this game under performs. It's clunky and ludicrously repetitive. It's a step back from Stranger's Wraith and the 100% attainment level goals distract from the narrative. Oddworld is an amazing universe and this is a filler game. Not a full release game.
