We took the old Land Cruiser station wagon to Moab and Canyonlands in 73, 74, 75, 77, 79, 81, and then I lose track. By 1981 we started riding motorcycles but you never saw bicycles till about 82. Oddly, the bicyclists glared at us as we rode by. I think they had experienced too many of the screaming fast 2-cycle bikes, rather than our slow quiet 4-cycle of putt putts. When we stopped to talk to them they were always friendly. I remember one guy who loaned us some oil from his support vehicle, a real Land Rover, who said we were the first motorcyclists he met that he liked. We noted he was the rare bicyclist smile for us too. That is sad. One of the first things parents try to teach their little children is how to share. It’s just as important now as then. Let’s do that.

Great story and thanks for sharing your story of you and your friends. I have only ridden in Moab once in 1994, but would love to get back one day. Porcupine Rim and Portal were my two favorite trails, I rode them solo because my friend at the time just wasn't up for the challenge of those two. He and I rode Slick Rock and Gemini Bridges together, but we have grown apart over the years. We had similar hobbies, mtn biking and backpacking....long story, but he has chosen to take another path w/ a different group of friends. Glad to see you guys make the time to meet up as often as possible, those memories are priceless.

Thanks John, its been great to stay connected with these guys. I haven’t done portal yet. Hoping to get in stronger shape this summer and then hit some longer trails this fall.

Great friends are better than anything in the world! It's VERY cool that you 6 have stayed in touch for as long as you have. I wish I could have been a 7th... 😉 Oh... and the vintage GoPro is AWESOME!

Great Story. It sounds like you "Discovered" Moab around the same time as me? I went back 14yeras in a row for the Fat Tire Festival! Moab is definitely like my second home. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

That would be cool! My brother and I did it back in 2018 with my folks it was a great experience. We’ve always thought it would be fun to do in a bigger group and have someone cook for us 😎.
