Welcoming vistas
Taking you through forbidden lands and witnessing its mystical festivals, Genesis Adventures offers a six-day itinerary for novices and adventurers alike to Lo Manthang
Recognized as the rain shadow region in the country, the infinite rocky terrains and sleepy hamlets along the way is a welcome respite for every traveler. Just the thought of traversing bizarre landscapes beyond the gates of Upper Mustang will surely revive you with vigor. Its capital city, Lo Manthang is different world. Embark on a journey to the place once forbidden and less known.
With precise planning and some dust on your boots you just might witness the widely anticipated annual Tiji festival.
Day 1
Start off with a hefty breakfast at Genesis Café. Fresh faces but with the familiar spirit of exploration, you’ll kick off the journey with a 200 km ride to Pokhara. The seven-hour drive is a breeze - enjoyable pit stops along the highway for lunch and refreshments, favorable weather and interesting company makes it seem way shorter. Your first day ends in Pokhara, ‘The City of Lakes’, Nepal’s top gateway destination for adventure.
Day 2
Today you will ride close to a 158 km, about seven hours to Jomsom. A third of the distance you cover are rocky paths and rugged terrains. High altitudes are quite challenging but one thing becomes clear - the battles uphill are not walks in the park. You’ll stop in Tatopani for a traditional lunch of dal bhat and some rest. You’ll be relieved to see the quaint hamlet of Jomsom, a little picturesque piece of heaven. Reaching your accommodation you can finally unwind, enjoy a meal and call it a night.
Day 3
Waking up to the sight of lofty mountains is a dream many long for. Here, in Jomsom with a mighty view and a bite to grab, it is only a day’s ride to the end destination. With 85 km to cover, you’ll traverse fierce rivers, steep hills and formidable rocky paths of loose sand and gravel.
Connect over pit stops and iconic skylines, we will stop along the way for pleasantries at Chusang and Syanmochen. Huge rocks in bizarre formations and the wild, barren valleys of the forbidden kingdom beckon you, and seven hours later Chosar welcomes you. Impressive as it may sound, an actual cave at Shelkher Guest House will be your home tonight. Take in the sights and sounds as you drift off to sleep.
Day 4
The fourth day we drive towards the Korala border right after a nutritious breakfast. Gaining altitude, the vast horizons will widen at 4660 mt, and you’ll see before your eyes the massive Jong Cave believed to have been built by escapee monks from Tibet. Fuel for the curious, the cave has been dug right out on a hill in the Trans-Himalayan region. With numerous openings and room sort of arrangement, the cave is our next stop. After this touristy experience we then proceed towards Lo Manthang.
Now sharing a priceless experience, revitalized with energy and camaraderie, your group will finally lay their eyes on the surreal valley.
Articulate ceremonies give way to vivid visualizations and concepts of celestial palaces and demons. The three-day festival surely is the coming together of Tibetan rituals, dances and prayers, making it by far one of the most colorful events you’ll set eyes on.
The hospitality and the revelry of this close-knit kingdom which was forbidden up until the 90’s, is a memory you won’t easily forget. As the day unfolds and dusk falls upon us, you will be assigned to your homely accommodations after a grand meal.
Day 5
Waving and saying your goodbyes aren’t easy, but it is an equally long way back which is why you’ll set out for Lete today. A 110 km drive that can take up to seven hours, you’ll be on the road after breakfast. A rocky descent, we will be pit stopping through picture-perfect Chusang and Marpha. We’ll call it a day upon reaching Lete.
Day 6
An early morning departure from Lete unfurls a breath-taking sight. Appreciate the breeze and the journey you have just taken. On the way we’ll come across Tatopani and Kushma, perfect stops to rejuvenate ourselves. Tatopani is a natural hot spring known to ease ailments of joints and most importantly to relieve passers-by of weariness. A quick dip and a meal later, we’ll be back on our saddles again. Covering a distance of 133 km over six hours, Pokhara is where we’ll settle for the night.
Day 7
Continuing the last leg of the itinerary, today will be a relaxed ride to Kathmandu. After a stroll around Lakeside and a comfortably satisfying lunch, we proceed to a 200 km ride to Kathmandu, where it all started. Reaching the winding uphill roads to Kathmandu, one may wonder how far we’ve come. Closing the ‘Lo Manthang Odyssey’ to an exceptional end, you’ll make your way once again to Genesis Café for some light hearted fun.
Special Thanks for supporting our ride.
