I modified an aluminum SBC Quadrajet intake manifold as per the instructions in your carburetor and intake manifold book. It was a killer daily driver manifold! Noticeably more off idle and mid range torque than any other dual plane manifold I had ever tried and it made more max HP than the ZZ4 dual plane intake it replaced.

I live in NZ so I didn't see this video until the morning. I was lying in bed with my wife and we were chatting away. I saw there was a new David vizard video so I started watching it. My wife said, what a lovely voice to wake up to. Such a gentle and soothing voice to wake up too. Thank you DV, I might make this a new morning routine.

Hey David, Tim here, now THATS a super cool, vid on mods that are worthwhile......ANY intake i purchase, i will now chk the radius from plenum to runner.....i kinda felt like that cud be huge, as we dont want charge shear, but YOU validated my hunch, and i'm SO thankful i've been a sub'r for at least 2 years now (i believe).... Quick story, i have a 462 inch Poncho, ported Kauffman heads, Edelbrock Torquer II, i ran a 2" spacer for years, one night at the track, i just experimented with spacer sizes........car sliwed with every other spacer i tried, untill i went back to the 2" open, BOOM ET, and mph, were back to where i started......each engine needs plenum volume, appropriate for the combo......THIS vid, validated ALL my effort, and thought.....yep, appropriate spacer size, and nice radius from plenum to runner!!!....THANK YOU SIR!!!!.....peace to you and yours, and PLEASE dont stop, untill the Lord says so......BOY i dug this vid!!

Thank you for all the knowledge you share! It seems one budget bound hot rodder could use the same logical thought process & modify most any wet manifold design for more flow efficiency! Great stuff Mr Vizard.

Thank you Mr Vizard! Great stuff. FYI I've played with the Holley spread bore carbs for high performance, and just be aware some of them had "reverse idle" circuits, meaning the mixture screws actually metered air (not fuel) and the idle discharge ports and transfer slots are quite small (I think only 0.027" if I remember my measurement). Of course this can all be modified, just wanted to mention it as it can be difficult to get these carbs to idle with a cam that has decent amount of overlap.

We got 25hp and 37ft lbs of torque out of a Subaru ej20 just by polishing down the inside of the aluminum intake manifold runners and plenum sanding down the factory casting marks and the rough surface in general. I used a steel cable, drill and sandpaper from a cut up sanding belt. I think skin friction, drag, and fluid dynamics in air passages aren't given as much credit as they deserve in the performance culture. Fascinating.💯👌

I have that book DV and many others. I did my first modification to the same type of intake about 30 years, ago, but not quite as extensive as he did here. The engines were basically stock 307's or 305's and a 250 hp 68 327, of very high mileage. No optimized cam, exhaust, carb, ignition, to speak of. I have a bunch of aftermarket intakes, but I am currently modifying an iron and aluminum oem intake just to see what I can get out of a updated ( ULTRA STEALTH )combination as seen here. It worked way back when, it should work even better today. and look like a boat anchor candidate. I got the stealth idea from DV, way back when.

@Mr. Vizard and Andy: Opening up a intake manifold/-channel actually helps. But it is 'dangerous' too. To much you will loose velocity. And then the length of the channel, thus the thickness of a spacer plays a part too. One of them is gasoline back firing into the intake channeling. May be Mr. Vizard or Andy can explain the details (?).
@paulmryglod4802
@paulmryglod4802 Ай бұрын
On performance motors, the older stock heads and stock manifolds have a high threshold for how much material can be removed before loss of velocity becomes an issue, vs increased overall flow. On aftermarket intakes with already improved runners of larger diameter, killing velocity is much easier to do.

You can also buy "cast iron" paint if you're running alloy heads, or block, for some reason, for the CI look - especially if there's also a few bits of GM paint dabbed on it, and some reddish-brown paint to look like some rusty bits. Depending on the chassis, if the engine uses the "Ram's Horn" exhaust manifolds, you can still buy the 2½" outlet "Corvette" versions to replace the usual 2" ones. You can also gain a bit, if you don't live in cold climes where you need the heating for fuel vapourisation, by blocking the exhaust cross-over heat risers on the intake and, potentially, using some thermal barrier paint on the inderside to reduce heat transfer there.

I heard talk of using powdered iron, and really thick paint on aluminum heads to sneak through tech at a racetrack. The intake also, don't know if it was done or just talked about, seems like a epoxy mixed heavily with iron powder could be brushed on, maybe given texture with sand paper when setting, could possibly work, the rules were any iron head and iron intake, stock stroke upto 357-360cid or something, the class we were in we could run aluminum intakes, I wanted to build a light weight stroker either383 or 427,with long rods, (long as possible with a 9" deck,) and a set of dart heads, maybe vortec heads,( this was over 20 years ago) I wanted to build this as a cheater, but I was also thinking, with a 6.20:1 gear, and and about 34" tires about 14" wide, and 15x14" rims , I thought they were 10" until I compared them to a 10" rim, and tried to use a 4way lug wrench! Haha, it was about 4" too short! Anyway I was kinda thinking 374-377 use a 400 block and a offset ground 350 crank get closer to 3.40" stroke, and use 6.125" small journal rods. With the piston out the hole about .020" , the 10:1 355 wanted to rev higher than the just shy of 7k it was just not enough power, or time, fuel was not an issue, they sold two grades regular 104 octane, and super, guessing it was 110 or so. we having compression in the 10's, ran roughly 50/50 104 and 93,I figured it was 98-100 +/-, Anyway a 370's cid should spin up faster, especially with a light piston rods and crank, the flywheel was as light as you could get a stock unit, the pressure plate could used a bit of work, anyway, with 370' something cid, and about 13:1-14:1 and 2.05" / 1.60" valves, and 1.75" headers, and 750 Holley carb, it should do better out of the turns, we didn't shift, with 6.20 gears, we just used the transmission for reverse! 1st gear was geared like a clock, it did maybe 5-7 mph in first gear, take off in high gear, was just a slight ride on the clutch, and there you go, it was a short dirt track, and we didn't drop under 4000+4700 +/- when under green. And I believe if the engine could hit 7k maybe 7100rpm I could been in the lead much easier, the carb had a dead spot we never got out of it, it run great on the street, just a second of sputter when at full throttle as the engine is revving, it was a single pump too small Holley I changed jets, cleaned it up, adjusted the needle and seats, adjust the pump, only made idle Rich, and move the sputter to higher rpm, it was a vacuum secondary, with a screw to get mechanical secondary, the sputter was about 50% opening of the secondaries, with the gears the tach basically moved with the throttle pedal! We ran points ignition, we even went through all that, . It would turn about 7600, before either points or valve float, with the solid 30/30 cam , even tried . 016"/.018 I think it ran crappy, the heads were 250 HP 350 heads,1.94"/1.50" we were on a budget, i think just a new 750 double pump Holley would have us in the mid to front, however, we were taken out, a car in front of me hit the brake on the green flag I drive straight under it, full throttle! Got sprayed with hot water, only slightly burned all over, fixed that, and a car spun out in turn 1-2, t-boned it, taking out another radiator! The first wreck the bumper was about 12" from my A pillars, his bumper, my a pillars, bent my air filter! 😆, Sorry to ramble on
