OEX Bobcat 1 UL: The Ultimate Budget-Friendly Ultralight Tent Review!
We'll be doing a comparison in this weeks video against the original Bobcat & the OEX Bobcat 1 UL the ultimate budget-friendly Ultralight tent in this first initial review!
Now this is a comparison video I've been dying to make! You all know my favourite tent of all time is the OEX Bobcat 1 but did you know that OEX have just brought out a selection of ultralight tents and one of these tents is the BOBCAT 1!🏕️
In this weeks video i pitch both the original Bobcat & the new Ultralite version together on this first initial review, we'll uncover why the OEX Bobcat 1 UL is the go-to choice for budget-savvy adventurers who refuse to compromise on quality. Crafted with the finest N-Liten Sil/Nylon fabric, this tent boasts a remarkable strength-to-weight ratio and superior waterproofing, ensuring a dry and cozy shelter even in the toughest conditions but don't go too stupid Ant haha! I'm under strict orders not to take it out in 50mph winds lol.
With lightning-fast setup and premium-grade T6 aluminium poles, pitching this tent is a breeze, allowing you to spend less time setting up and more time soaking in your stunning surroundings and cracking open a craft ale or 3. Plus, with its spacious porch area and generous length, tall campers can finally bid farewell to cramped quarters and stretch out in style but I will put this to the test.
Join the ranks of UK wild campers who swear by the OEX Bobcat's reliability and fuss-free design. Whether you're embarking on a solo expedition or planning a weekend getaway mooching the mountains, this ultralight marvel is your ticket to adventure without the extra baggage.
Ready to lighten your load? Cause wouldn't it be nice to put a pack on every once and a while that feels as though your carrying rock all!
Very special thanks go out to OEX for their generosity in allowing me to test out what is sure to be a firm favourite of not only mine but I'm sure lot's of you guys too!
I do hope you enjoy this video, I know I did making it! If you did, please think about giving it a thumbs up, if you really enjoyed it, a sub would be awesome but what really helps me and the channel out is if you can share this video to like-minded people, people who enjoy our great outdoors! After all, it's free!
To stay up to date with the videos why not hit the notification bell, that way you won't miss up and coming prizes but most of all... The new videos each week!

You know my feelings Chris and I don't mind telling anyone who wants to know them. I have fought tooth and nail to get this opportunity and all the other opportunities that I've had that have graced my channel. I've put this tent and other pieces of equipment through hell and possibly back again. Doing collaborations like this are a privilege and not to be sniffed at. I vowed I would never take crap gear, never sell it on, never do raffles and keep the cash and never ever pull the wool over anybodies eyes with a constant change of mind on which is my favourite tent, piece of equipment or clothing. I mean, how much gear have I given away! Give back to your supporters thats ehat i say. I'll always stay true to my loyal subscriber base and tell them exactly my thoughts on a item. And one final thing, if you do a review take that item out properly, and not in a local field, park or back garden, be honest with my supporters is my main priority. Haha, sounded like I was giving a sworn in speech then haha! All true though.

Ahh thank you my man, that's very kind, I appreciate that. Yeah nothing changes matey, I ask to work with them, they provide the gear, I stipulate that it's a honest review, meaning if it's not a great item I let my views know this. I provide videos and photos for the channel and my social media which hopefully generates sales for them and subscribers for me. I get to showcase new gear, produce new content for you all to watch and give away gear on the channel also. The main thing for me is content and building a successful KZbin channel in a honest way. I went on a bit there didn't I, sorry.

A one wind silnylon ground sheet 2.4 x 1.4 m at 197 grams will be an almost perfect addition to that tent and they are cheap enough too . Can be used as a makeshift tarp to go over the top as a canopy or create a more steathy side to the tent .as they are a perfect green /brown colour .

Hi Andy mate, thank you pal, good of you. Yeah I've been wanting to go lightweight for a while, I mean you know how much we carry mate and it doesn't leave much room for anything else. Bit the think is lightweight usually equals cost. For me I don't think that a high cost for a UL tent and for me yo say that who's always skint haha, it can't be bad. I don't think you would get a cheaper and one that's made by a reputable company as OEX. Yeah haha, don't think I'll be going too crazy in this one mate, I'll push it but to just beyond it's limits, nothing quite like what I've took the OG into haha. Yeah the DIY for the seem sealer does make sense. The cost, manpower, time and space needed to get each one done would be ridiculous. Thanks again buddy and I'm getting out in it next weekend I'm hoping pal

Excellent detailed comparison mate ..Ref the new bobcat..In my opinion; bad colour for wild/stealth camping, unless you cover with tarp,camo netting. As fr it being a two season tent. I have to be honest, lightweight tents like these sil nylon/ Lanshans, are not good for coastal windy/ blustery weather conditions. I done the 630 mile South West Coastal Path a few times now,and as usual, even in summer we can get adverses weather. A few times i have seen these lighweight tents absolutely smashed to pieces. Or very close to taking off like a kite..So even in spring/ summer i believe they dont do well at all on the coast. For example, seeing you sat in that new one, it i could see the tent sides flapping around. However of course if you inland camping and near some ground cover, it wont be that bad...I think 🤔.. Me personally, i will stick to my original blast proof, tank of a tent: The Bobcat 1. I have used it twice on the SWCP and it stood up excellently to those coastal blustery winds..And will again when idonit again in June..Love your videeos mate ..👍
@AntSurviveTheNight
@AntSurviveTheNight 2 ай бұрын
Hi Mik, good to see you back. Thank you pal and hope you enjoyed it. Yeah it's definitely a case of checking the weather before venturing out and if the weather changes or is planning on changing if your on a multi day hike then I'd be looking to pitch up around cover. The coastal areas i use are great as they have places to hide in if the weather turns. With regards to the colour, I'd say it's mainly so that you can be seen, say I'd your a lone hiker and you need attention, the colour is there so you can be found. Just my opinion matey. Big thanks for your input and I'm chuffed your enjoying the videos, thanks pal 👍

Nice one Ant, that was good & I do kinda like the Storm Blue colour, as I'd decribe it...! But I still prefer the design features of original Bobcat, being the multi function door & the larger rainflap/vent cover... Also the porch floor, so three key features that aren't on the UL, but it is half the weight, so good for those that are putting in the miles...👍 U know that you're still gonna have to test it out on a blowing a hoolie day, right...?!!!🤔✔️💯😄

Cheers for the review Ant, I've got an original Bobcat which I like to use when out wild camping. Wasn't overly keen on the blue, though think its not as blue as I originally thought but more of a blue steel grey. I feel if they had used a sandy earthy colour it may have been more popular. Will be good to see how it gets on and if it pops up as a bargain may just get one... maybe 😃 atb!

I have never had the problem with inner & fly touching. I put four of those tiny carabeaners on the four hooks and am happy with that.. Came back Ant to add to my initial comments here. Go outdoors magazine just dropped through my door there and i see the retail price is £350 but theyre selling it for £189. I still maintain my initial thoughts about this tent and will be sticking with my original bobcat. But £189 for this is far more reasonable. In all honesty, i think thats what the retail should have been for this in the first place. £189 will make it far more attractive to far more people i believe. Id say that price is worth it if your one of these gram shaver types.I still hate the bloody colour though lol. 👍😁

Lovely review mate, I love my bobcat, been my go to for a while now... However was in Go Outdoors today and saw the UL Bobcat and my head was turned, it shocked me how light and small it was packed away. Hi again RDub, yeah it's just so lightweight isn't it, literally nothing. I'm just carrying a small tarp with me which I'll show in my next video, just to give me that front porch area back so I can sit if the weather is bad. I'll look at getting the original footprint though to review. Yeah if you do a lot if woodland camping I would resist getting it , one the colour and two, the ground on which it will be pitched, lots of things that could potentially rip it I'd say.

Really enjoyed your walk around but it’s too light weight for me, and more money than I want to lay out for budget camping. My Dutch Army tent in canvas comes in at a manageable 6.6kg and opens both sides. The light weight tent is ideal for competition type events abroad. I personally think the British Army Basha at 998 grams is a good contender for light weight camping on a budget. Tents are going the same way bikes went, too technical

I've just bought one - much as I love my long suffering Vango Zenith 200, at 69, I've finally had to admit that if I'm going to continue hauling my gear on trains and ferries before I even start walking, I need to lighten my load. Next is an Osprey Eja Pro pack - getting old is expensive !

@@AntSurviveTheNight I'm hoping to get away for a week to ten days soon - I don't do overnighters because it's too much time spent on public transport for too little time away hence more stuff to cart. I would love to know the weight of this new tent without the inner .just fly ,pegs and pole . As i see the bobcats as a real option to use without the inner .would be great if it was down to around 600 grm . It would make a great emergency shelter for day walks

@rufusduck71 2 ай бұрын
The weight of the original bobcat without inner is 1325 g so about 1/3 of the total tent weight. If the ul is similar it should come out around 650 grm which for a fully enclosed shelter with pole big enough for 2 to lie down in is fantastic .add a a light weight ground sheet around 200 grm and for 850 grm you have an emergency shelter for 2 . Shed a few pegs and guys to get it lighter. This tent is great as it will stand up well with only 5 pegs

For the price they can stick it I'll keep my original. I hate the colour, I hate the transparency of it. Taking the vestibule floor away was insane when you explicitly need that area to do everything from sitting to cooking to keeping your kit dry. You absolutely need that floor in foul weather. Her another way just to rob your pocket by forcing you to buy the footprint for an already rediculously way overpriced piece of material. Shortening the door canopy!! What were they thinking. The worse part of the tent....made worse. Really!! This tent sold because it was one of those rare gems that comes along one in a lifetime. 5000 hydro, light and compact (enough), withstands some vicious weather and for some strange and obscure reason, was tossed out the door for a meagre £50. I guarantee you, they will not sell nowhere near the amount of the original. No matter how smaller, lighter or compact. It's simply not worth the money by far, and people know that. When your prices for a budget company one man tent are heading towards second hand terra novas and hillebergs territory, they're gonna know they're outta the game. I reckon if your really set on buying this, then just sit tight and wait. The price they want will plummet, it has to so they can shift what the majority will refuse to buy. And with good reason. Your not getting anything that the original can't do. Your paying through the nose purely to save a few grams over an original tent that already weighs nothing when on your back. Only the insane would buy it. OEX just got greedy, nothing more. Imho

Agreed, it's like buying a car, and then the sportier lighter version, and less spec comes out and they charge more for it.
@AntSurviveTheNight
@AntSurviveTheNight 2 ай бұрын
Hi Kittchen, thank you very much for your time in writing that and for obviously watching the video. In my opinion, you're wrong. This company is definitely not greedy. They constantly price check their gear, bring new items out at a cut down cost from the original price, and updating released kit not just making new (which they do also). The tent is aimed at the multi day adventurers out there. It's niche, yes, but UL is a huge niche market. The price as actually gone up from the time this video as gone out which means sales are high which that's what happened with the OG Bobcat, I am sure was a part of that but that the whole point of my videos, to see how good gear is. This will get tested, and it will get punished, not in stupid conditions like I did with the OG but hard conditions I think it will be able to cope with. People need to see what they are buying, from your high end market to budget, gear should be fully taken to the limits so people like yourself, who are very unsure of a model can make a viable choice. We don't know how good or how bad this tent will perform, but I'll make damn sure you know by the end of the summer. The footprint issue you have, you have to see they have released this as light as possible and then its your choice if you want to add more weight and thats why youll get that option to purchase one, same slas the tarp that's an extra too. To be fair, every company does just that, don't they. Once again, mate, thanks for your constructive criticism, and I hope I've helped sway you a little into giving me a chance to prove you wrong by coming back to the channel and watching this tents progress. Who knows, it could quite well be terrible and if it is I will tell you. Cheers pal, Ant 👍

@@AntSurviveTheNight oh now Ant, are we talking about todays little woke kids here who've never known hardships and have no concept of what canvas is or ridge tents are lol. Thank you for the reply btw. I watch all you videos, strange, I can't understand why it's asking me to subscribe as I did that a long time ago, but I shall try again. Yeah I know where your coming from mate, but you can't use the adjective "HUGE niche", that's a contradiction in terms. Niche is a specialised product or service that appeals to a SMALL section of the populous/market. And yes. I have bad and evil dreams about UL campers. I agree about OEX not being greedy, though I should have perhaps phrased that a little better. They do produce some good kit and and at very competitive prices too, for the most. And I certainly wouldn't expect you to spank them when they're sending you gear to try. What I meant was, I think (and I hate saying this because I hate the whole UL ethos), they're either attempting to, or being forced by current market trends, to step into the UL world in order to, or an attempt to, compete with big name brands and price certain goods accordingly. Everybody knows them for making good, solid above average affordable kit at reasonable cost to the end consumer. They're like Vango or Coleman yet appear to be attempting to dip a toe or two in Hilleberg world if you see what I'm getting at. They've built their reputation upon it. Now, they're knocking out what I would guess, the vast majority of their consumer base either can't afford or won't be willing to pay for, purely because they are perceived as a solid decent middle of the road manufacturer and not a top end supplier. Ultimately, I think they're just pandering to the UL fairies and as soon as that little trends last week's news, all the better imho. (Can ya tell I hate the UL brigade lol). I've no doubt it's a good tent, but for what they've done to it and the price they're asking, I firmly believe people will either stick with what they got or save the extra and buy big brand names. (English Woodsman must be in tears at the cost of this new OEX offering I'll bet). For what they are asking, I'd pay the extra for a top end product, And i think the majority of people will too. You have to wonder, in this day and age, where all the little jam eaters are online or in front of a camera, and have to bee seen with the latest and greatest brand name offerings, if OEX are trying to shift themselves up a notch or ten. Food for thought. Anyhoo, I am looking forward to you sticking that tent up on Blencathra in dire gale force winds and freezing it to death in mid winter and drowning it etc lol. I loved when you froze your tent up the Kirkstone pass and when yours was still standing while supposedly higher end tents were ripped up. Few questions in that one eh lol. Keep them coming mate, this old man does enjoy watching. Regards Ian. Oh, and I'll attempt to subscribe......again 👍
