Isn't the idea of "fanboyism" or "antifanboyism" sort of strange when you think about it? All these companies making computers make billions of dollars each year. Why should we invest our time and energy defending them relentlessly and trashing their competitors on their behalf? And why should we trash what brings other people enjoyment? These companies don't need it and it doesn't do us any good.
@gutzbin
@gutzbin 3 жыл бұрын
@@Joel11111 It’s definitely not defending the company as much as it is defending your own personal bias and opinion. You chose an Apple product, you like what Apple does. Someone insulting the company insults your personal taste, choice and bias, so the natural impulse is to defend the company in a dire attempt to defend your opinion. This becomes even worse when you buy one of their products, then someone goes and gives factual evidence as to why other products are much stronger and better at the same price. You, trying to convince yourself that the product you bought is the best and that there is no way you made a mistake or overlooked a detail, defend the product you bought to the grave. However, people mistake “being a human being with an opinion” for fanboyism, and also mistake “giving actual evidence that something is better than another” as fanboysim For example, I saw a comment talking about how the new Macbook Pro is overpriced, pretending that the price of the 8TB model (7000 dollars) is the base price (the base price is 3500 dollars by the way), which is quite literally just lying to prove their own personal bias that Apple is Evil incorporated. Then, when people A- Called them out on it, or B- explained how the Macbook Pro is quite literally better than most notebooks/ultrabooks in their class with perfect explanations and reasoning as to why, they were completely ignored and called Apple fanboys. The internet sucks ass.

@@svpracer98 it’s a bit worrying that Apple is becoming more and more hyper-focused on shipping products that are catered towards “creative professionals”. They even built in parts of the chip dedicated to accelerating certain media-production workloads on the M1 pro and max. These are entire blocks of the chip that are forever going to sit idle for anyone who doesn’t do media production. It used to be that they focused mainly on this market just on the software side of things, but now you can see this focus hard-coded into their silicon. Which makes me wonder, “okay, but what about everyone else who just prefers MacOS over Windows, apple”? Not everyone is a photographer, video editor, or music producer. It’s a shame they don’t make an effort to branch out into more markets.

Rosetta and metal are different categories. Rosetta is a translation for cpu while metal is an API. A game can be running rosetta (not native for cpu) while on metal API (for rendering) like the game tomb raider which runs exceptionally well compared to other AAA because of metal but it's still translated to arm via rosetta. At that point making it native would only give limited performance gain as tomb raider is not a cpu heavy game

@@topethermohenes7658 Think it still is good to disclose if it's rosetta or native and/or metal also. In this case, how much energy can be stored in the battery. So, a 100Wh battery can put off 100W over 1 hour or it can put off 20W over 5 hours.

If there was demand I could see them working with game developers like they do with pro apps so that on launch many apps are already optimized for M1. However, almost nobody buys a Mac specially to game. This is like the chicken and egg problem. Game developers need gamers on the platform to justify optimizing games for Mac like they do with other platforms. But gamers need games to switch too MacOS. The Mac community, Apple, & game developers have all given up on the idea. Most of the community will even say things "if you want to game buy a PC, we do really work here" and Apple doesn't really care about "gamers" because the gaming community doesn't align with Apples values and decisions and game developers dont see a big enough incentive to spend time and money on the MacOS platform. Honestly, I use to be big into gaming, got a Mac for development. Hardly game anymore and I see myself falling into that attitude. If you want to game just buy a PC, dont bring the gaming community to Mac because their demands with just push Apple to ruin a great product. What gamers want hardly line up with what professionals want, performance is the only place they over lap & even then when professionals talk about performance they mean like the dedicated encoder and decoder on the chip for pro-res. Windows and gamers fit well together and I think it should stay that way.

I think it's fair to show both games. One running on metal and another running the horrible openGL. Then maybe gamers will press game devs to consider optimizing for metal more. Even if you are a windows fan and hate Apple/Mac if you see the performance difference of using openGL vs the Metal API you will be blown away and wish windows had an equal. As a c++ developer I still have no idea what they are doing with metal to get those kinds of performance boosts. It would also be cool to see the linux kernel release some API and software for game optimization. I still find it very funny that the platform most games are developed for is the one without any optimization done for games. But Apple kinda shot themselves in the foot years ago and to this day Apple/the Mac community and the gaming community dont really align well. Windows and the gaming community fit each other well.

I don't think something you have used once is all that vital at all. If you're plugging things in all the time though, that's a solid usecase, and those have been mentioned here - embedded hardware devs, people with video drones and stuff. Even people who 3D print, though that's kind of a temporary thing for most i guess before putting a Pi-based wireless spooler on their printer. Like for sure more connectivity is always better, but the space is limited, so if you aren't using the port a lot, wouldn't you rather instead have a port that you do use a lot or can't replace with a simple USB device?

@@piobu5357 Most people will find an SD-Card reader or 3 or 5 if they just rummage in their stuff. Most USB-C hub manufacturers just chuck one into the end of the hub, that's nice as well, and not quite as easy to lose. I think having an SD-Card port on the machine is nice, but to be kept in mind that these computers specifically in this video are somewhat minituarised and slimmed down and densely packed, space actually is an issue. What ports one may wish for instead? Maybe more USB. I don't think you can combine alt modes, once a USB port is dedicated as a display output (displayport alt mode via USB-C socket), you can't have actual USB connectivity on it, can you? So if you max out the display connections on this one, you cannot connect any more peripherals, if that's the case.

@@SianaGearz see, I don't have a USB SD card reader lying around, and I don't know anyone that does - maybe someone like a pro photographer would have a bunch of them (or someone that's been living in Apple's port-less ecosystem for years), but an average Joe probably won't. I do have some old USB 1.0 pendrive-like MicroSD reader, but that wouldn't help me with the full size SD card I needed to access recently. A 'Pro' designation, or Pro Max even, should indicate that a professional can use it out-of-the-box, and that would be hard to do with the last year's 2-thunderbolt Mbooks - you can't even plug in a normal USB-A pendrive to them, and that's a common real world use case (something I do a few times a week at work). This year's models are a definite improvement in that regard, and everyone's been raving about the reintroduction of ports in the reviews. Finally a product I can recommend.

I think Apple took the right approach to the software implementation of the notch. On a low level it's the only choice. GPUs can only render to rectangular textures. What they could have done is change the behaviour of the cursor. Either it could get stuck in the corners between the top bezel in the notch, which would be really horrible or moving it to the side would actually move it around the notch, which because of the longer way would mess up people's muscle memory about the sensitivity of the cursor and is just endlessly complicated. They should fix the hidden menubar items though.
@HeyItsHades
@HeyItsHades 3 жыл бұрын
it's false that software can only work in rectangles. They could have easily not included the notch to be display and that is the right choice where the OS pretends the notch doesn't exist and the screen jumps back and forth across it.

I think the initial introduction of the Touch Bar was great and it could have been so much more and better than function keys but developers didn't do anything with it because Apple didn't really push for it or talk about it. Then when apple saw developers didn't instantly jump to use it the took a step back and we didn't see any improvements or use for it over time. I wish they could have done it right and pushed developers to utilize it because the concept is great but the execution was poor.

@@froznfire9531 A gaming laptop at $1000 would be around triple the geometric volume and mass of the M1 mac. It's not just the performance, it's the fact that it's coming out of something so small, not to mention, gaming is probably the last workload Apple had in mind for the M1 chip. ARM tends to favor battery life at the expense of performance, and that's before accounting for x86 compatibility layer overhead.

@@0xEmmy It has gotten way better, sure they weight in more because of the added need for cooling, but there are slim options and nowhere near 3 times the volume. I mean the 16" M1Max weights 2.2kg, most gaming laptops dont weight more... Dont really see how you consider that small/light and the 14" tends to overheat and throttle so you basically have to go with the big one if your doing long work sessions. Sure the mac isnt made for gaming in any way but at the price it would be pretty essential not being limited to basically rendering and editing for the most part. Battery is great though and a thing which windows laptops can improve on, nearly the same cable and battery performance is impressive. I mean I am a video editor myself but I would only consider a mac with an added Windows PC and the prices for those new M1 is high as always, thought they go more budget like the M1 Air...

Literally first time Apple made me so much excited for a product like AMD or NVIDIA does. Ports are also back and MagSafe too. Nice Job, actually revolutionary. As a physics student, I can’t help getting annoyed by wrong units. Specifically, the unit for battery capacity (energy) is ‘Wh’, aka ‘watt-hour’ or ‘ watt times hour’, not ‘W/h’ (‘watt per hour’, which makes no sense). Power is energy per unit time, so if we multiply it by time we get energy again.

@MLWJ1993
@MLWJ1993 3 жыл бұрын
Not really though. You'd just not really be using that 3080 to its maximum capability (4k & raytracing, utilising DLSS). If you think such things are "cheating", you should also "turn off" hardware acceleration for the M1 GPU cores (the optimisations are build into the hardware so you can't actually turn them off, but not supporting that kind of hardware is the equivalent of that). It actually causes that GPU to drop below a RTX 2060 mobile operating @ 80W. That's the truth about what is going on & what makes the M1 efficient, it's doing certain things smarter, not actually "going faster" (and that is a valid approach to things).
