I was Soupy's production assistant at WNEW channel 5 in New York. I'm thrilled to see these G-R-R-E-A-T videos again. God bless.

Holy cow!! That's amazing!!! You might appreciate the Pookie puppet I have that was molded from the last Pookie that Trudy Sales had (before the rubber completely melted away). Frank Nastasi had some input on it before he passed away. See: "Soupy Sales and Pookie tribute - homemade" on KZbin. I coated it with silicone so it won't dissolve (like rubber does over time).

The mark of a truly GREAT comic, no matter how childishly silly or stupid a gag...and even if you have seen it before, YOU STILL LAUGH LIKE IT WAS THE FIRST TIME. Love you always Soupy and White Fang, many happy memories. Thank you.

This was genius. They didn't have a big budget, so they had to be creative. Talking dogs were remarkably inventive...

A guy who could talk with his big doggie as if it was natural. God, I loved Soup. That alone was innovative. And how he would look directly into the camera as if you were there. And how he would walk up into the camera and get up close. These were all new and innovative comedy and new TV. Laural and Hardy innovative stuff.

The person who posted the captions does get it. The words are their interpretation. Soupy does not repeat all of Fangs sentences.

Thank you, Johnny. I thought it was obvious, so I didn't respond. I appreciate your support in what I thought was just sort of a "fun" translation. I mean, you can just about decipher exactly what Adler and Nastasi are actually saying most of the time in White Fang's language without Soupy's translation. By the way, Captain Kangaroo wasn't my cup of tea, except for the Banana Man. Same thing with Disney's stuff. It was Tex Avery for me.

Great video. Clyde Adler was the voice and arms of White Fang, plus he was usually the unseen guy at the door, and the voice of Pookie the Lion. In the old black and white clip, it was Frank Nastasi doing the voice and arms of White Fang. Not sure who did Black Tooth, may have also been Adler.

Thanks for the comment. It reminded me of a great clip (I'll see if I can find it) where the man at the door (Nastasi at the time) would ask Soupy a question, to which Soupy had to walk back to ask White Fang the answer. This went on for several minutes, where Nastasi had to be at the door and then Soupy had to give him enough time to run from behind the set and behind the cameras, and up on the ladder in order to respond as White Fang, who then answered Soup's question that required an answer from the guy at the door, and so Soupy had to give Nastasi enough time to get back to the door. And the longer it went on, the louder the crew laughed...even if the audience didn't completely understand what was happening. Found it! Sometimes KZbin won't allow links to be posted, so just look for "White Fang Steals a Steak." Also, if I haven't bored you yet, here's a Pookie puppet that I have: search for ""Soupy Sales and Pookie tribute - homemade"

Frank Nastasi explained on The "Biography"TV tribute to Soupy..that he wouldn't allow Frank or even Clyde Adler to just grunt as"White Fang & Black Tooth"their sound had to make sense..to the viewing audience understood what they were saying.

Excellent. Thanks for the info. I'm going to search out that documentary on KZbin. Speaking of KZbin, I talked to a guy some years ago who knew Frank and Soupy while they were doing the show in N.Y. Frank told him a lot about how he manipulated the puppets. The guy even went to Soupy's widow (who still had an old Pookie from the show - but it was in very bad shape because the rubber simply disintegrated and was melting over time) and was able to borrow Pookie to remake another one. His was also rubber. I contacted him and bought a copy. But it was also rubber and also started to disintegrate over time and usage. So I told him I was going to fix Pookie with silicon rather than rubber. Pookie now holds up great. I made a little video of my Pookie. I don't think KZbin allows links, but if you look for the title: SOUPY SALES AND POOKIE TRIBUTE - HOMEMADE you can check it out.

The best were the remarks soupy came out and said, such as " why do I see f, you see k? Think about it, and the best, my grandma makes my apple pie, my mom makes my peach pie, and my wife makes my banana cream! Hilarious, he got suspended for a week or two for that, great show
@Dlevvideo30

He never said those lines. Urban myths. He was suspended on a New Year's Eve 1965 show for joking about telling kids to take money from their mom's pocketbook and their dad's wallet and send him some money and he then said, I will send you a postcard from Puerto Rico. This was the last few mins of a show where he had to do a bit as there wasn't enough material.

I wouldn't be surprised! I am surprised at how hard Clyde threw those things (you've probably seen the behind-the-scenes pictures of Clyde hitting Soupy dead center with a well-aimed pie from off-camera - that's a real skill!). There's also a great picture of Clyde hunched down behind the window poking Pookie up to talk to Soupy. You can also see the TV monitor that Clyde watched at the same time.

@@luckyzert Sales, whose given name is Milton Supman, was born in North Carolina. He got his start as a radio scriptwriter and standup comic, going on to host immensely popular local children's shows in Cincinnati, Detroit, New York and Los Angeles. He also has made guest appearances on numerous TV shows, occasionally appeared in films and twice had hit records, with the novelty songs "The Mouse" and "Spy With a Pie." Besides throwing cream pies, Sales also takes them in the face. He once estimated he had been hit 25,000 times.

You really couldn't appreciate Soupy Sales Show til you got a translation of White Fang's remarks? Soupy repeats what the dog says, anyway. You're beyond help. You don't get it. Back to Captain Kangaroo with you.

Not sure that I can completely agree with that statement. When I watch movies with subtitles I eventually stop reading the captions as you can get more from the action, or sometimes folk's body language. In the case of White Fang the sounds generally resembled what a more intelligible dialogue would have sounded like. Besides, really good storytelling requires some imagination and/or suspension of belief. I mean, a giant dog, that (apparently?) stands for long periods on his hind legs...AND TALKS.
