Never before or since has there ever been anything like this on TV. Soupy was an original never to be duplicated!

What I loved then and love now is that Mr. Sales never talked down to children. He brought us up to his level and let us know it was O.K. to be goofy even if you are an adult. Haven't seen this stuff since I was a kid and it sure brings me back. What brought me here? Soupy randomly dropped into my mind when I was at work. Why? Who knows...but, thank you for the upload...it really made my day.

My dad did sound effects for the show in NYC. I used to go into the studio when his show was recorded Soupy (Milton) used to come over our house when we had company BBQ. I remember one show when Soupy removed the blank cartridges from the starter gun that was used as the sound effect for when he fot hot with pies. When my dad fired the gun all you heard was the "click" from the gun. The whole crew laughed. Milton was a very funny guy

Did Soupy ever have White Fang on his Detroit nighttime show? There’s a story about him teaching White Fang the alphabet. When Soupy would point to F, White Fang would say K. The line that got Soupy into trouble is “How come every time I see F you see K.”

Sounds like typical low-class and utterly false folklore to me. Given what a fine human being and overall nice guy Soupy was, no one should spread such obnoxious rumors without proof.
@Teelirious9 ай бұрын
Well, I thought the "send me money while your parents are hung over from New Year's Eve" thing was an obnoxious rumor, too, until I heard him tell the story himself. So who knows?

Growing up in Los Angeles, Loved Soupy and Clyde Adler. Thanks for sharing.
@vibra645 жыл бұрын
That was not Adler. That was Frank Nastasi. Nastasi did all the voices when the show was in NY. When it moved back to LAS in the 70's Adler returned to do the voices.

You can tell Soupy is working hard to keep from cracking up. I think his stage hands were often making gestures at him (lewd from what I've heard) to see if they could get him to lose it on camera, lol.

Thanks for posting. But I want to make sure we give credit where credit is due. The ORIGINAL WHITE FANG was the fabulously talented Clyde Adler-- who created the voices of Fang, Black Tooth, etc during Soupy's Detroit period in the late '50's. Frank Nastasi ALSO worked on that show as an occasional fill-in for Clyde. When Soupy moved to Los Angeles in '59, Clyde Adler appeared as Fang exclusively (he's heard on both of Soupy's LP recordings from 1961). So Clyde was the "original", superb and unequaled voice artist who, believe it or not, didn't really care for doing it, since his first love was his work as TV studio technician and floor director. The BLACK AND WHITE Soupy episodes--such as the one you've posted here-- are from Soupy's 1964-67 period in NEW YORK--which can be called his "middle period". Frank Nastasi now took over as Fang, B.Tooth, Pookey, and the man at the door (Note that he performs BOTH man-at-door AND Fang in the above skit)., since Clyde didn't want to move to NY. Soupy's "late period" was his return to LA in 1978 in color--- and there are many of his FANG skits posted here on You Tube. Thankfully, the great CLYDE ADLER once again took over the animal roles.... and brought back Fang's outrageous, dynamic, and perfectly -timed characterization. So CLYDE ADLER is the "Original" (and "Final") White Fang; Frank Nastasi--seen in the B&W New York clips---was a runner-up, a talented guy whose characterizations, however, didn't come close to those of Adler. The Soupy Sales Shows..that aired on WNEW(formerly WABD/WNEW now WNYW)TV Ch.5 in NYC..aired from 1964 to 1966..not 1964 to 1967..Hasso.

Clyde Adler was great but I don’t think it’s fair to call Frank Nastasi a “runner-up.” Frank was just different. He brought a manic comic sensibility to his routines with Soupy which made for a lot of hilarity not only for viewers but for Soupy and the crew.

Frank Nastasi was hilarious. He and Soupy had a great comic rapport.

Archie Campbell, I believe it was, told a similar joke. In his case, it was concerning another man's girlfriend Archie had dated. The boyfriend didn't like Archie going out on a date with her. Upon consulting his diary, he replied that he didn't, either. In the mid- to late-70s, I prayed this show would be on late at night, and that I could receive it with just my little black & white television's rabbit-ears antenna. My childhood was often an awful ordeal, and Soupy helped to make it bearable.

And that is part of the inside joke. Nastasi has to keep running back and forth to do both characters as Soupy makes sure that he moves slow enough to allow Nastasi time to get back and forth.
@yvonnetaylor29568 ай бұрын
Yes. That is the laye & gteat Franl Nastasi. He was with Soupy in Detroit and New York. When Soupy moved to KTLA in Los Angeles, Grank chose to stay in New York. He was replaced by the late Lou Adler, another talented voice actor & puppeter.

I can't imagine kids nowadays having the kind of patience needed for the " punchline " here, but as a child of the 50s this is classic. We always knew that Soupy would get a pie at the end of each show, but it was always funny. I have seen 1 or 2 other shows where the faceless " guy at door " was a gimmick, does anyone know if Soupy Sales was the originator of this type of comedy bit on tv?
