This black & white educational film is about the Bell Telephone System and its progress over time. This is copyright 1951.
Opening titles: "Of Many Voices" (:07). This story of the telephone will be told by three people: Jim, Helen, and Paul (:47). Paul is set to retire after fifty years of service to the telephone company (1:08). Paul shows up looking for work to be a telephone man; he meets the boss, Mr. Cassidy, who is rather cantankerous (1:30). The man shows off his telephone (3:50). He tricks his way into getting a job (5:00). Wright Bros. first flight; Henry Ford (5:07). Paul reads an electrical engineering book and speaks to Mr. Cassidy about it (5:27). A trolley car; New York City’s first subway; The San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 (6:26). Paul has an interview to be an engineer (6:55). Telephone wires in 1914 connect the coasts (7:53). War in Europe, WWI; United States enters the war (8:32). WWI battle footage (9:12). Paul returns from the war, he speaks to his manager and will be Plant Engineer (9:55). Fabulous 1920s in America; progress in America (10:43). Charles Lindbergh (11:24). Bell Telephone Laboratories experiment with a kind of film/video-phone (11:33). Paul speaks to management about the progress being done (12:40). Helen Cassidy works as a switchboard/telephone operator out west (13:48). Helen gets various calls and calls a doctor for an injured girl (15:49). She works through a high pressure situation (17:09). Prosperity in the 1920s (19:35). Stock Market crash (19:50). Paul reviews plans with an employee (20:07). Industry makes a comeback in the mid-1930s (21:00). Telephone system makes progress as well (21:22). Helen is in a larger city acting as a boss; she speaks with her fellow workers (21:28). 1941 - when the United States entered WWII - Pearl Harbor sneak attack (22:52). Washington higher-ups discuss (23:13). Engineers assist the government (24:20). Workers on the assembly line making telephones (25:02). WWII battle footage (25:13). Japan surrenders, war is over (25:37). Parade for our war heroes (25:47). At Bell Laboratories, research continues (25:57). Paul is retiring after fifty years; he speaks to a fellow employee about how phones have advanced (26:43). Paul meets his grandson who wants to work at Bell Labs (28:44). Paul’s retirement dinner/speech (29:41). Jim, Paul’s grandson is mentioned and is coming onboard at Bell (31:20). Paul continues his farewell speech (32:50). End credits (34:05).
