Polaris and most of Dan's songs are to seek resolution, virtue, and connection but convey angst towards apathy, denial, or shallowness. Altered State is not the opposite but it focuses on entirely different things. This may be why different people favorite both as the pinnacle of music. Altered State's purpose is most clearly defined in Of Mind - Exile and especially the finale: Of Energy - Singularity/Embers. Ashe's songs seek purpose, change, and freedom but convey angst towards abandonment, shame, or nihilism. Altered State conveys much more toil with one's self rather than with the world. It may also seem that considering the style of vocals, lyrics, and instrumentation that Altered State correlates turmoil with excitement, joy, and beauty because struggle brings out one's shameless sense purpose. This isn't the kind of album that is meant to be listened to casually. It's the kind of album that people look back at and say, "This got me through a tough part of my life". Something to get you through your lowest point rather than accompany your highest point.

Dan or Ashe? Both. Ashe was perfect for Altered State, it was as if the stars had aligned and the band created something they might never surpass. Still, while melodically and harmonically Altered State is more densely packed, with some unbelievable atmospheres and soundscapes, I think Dan is capable of more dynamics. Or at least, his style is more varied, more technical than Ashe's. Dan sometimes goes to places you wouldn't expect, makes some musical decisions that catch you off guard. Ashe's harmonies on that album are pure bliss, he's a fricking choir of angels all by himself. Dan, on the other hand, is like a singing monster. He's extremely professional and sings with a certain finesse. Ashe gives such an organic quality, such life to a track that would be empty without him, takes you to catharsis. Dan grabs you at the neck and flies high above it with you until you find yourself plummeting toward the earth. They're both ridiculously good. And I still find it hard sometimes to enjoy Altered State tracks with Dan, Ashe's performance was so impeccable. Altered State wouldn't have been such a unique experience with Dan on the vocals. And Ashe wouldn't have made the same decisions in some tracks on Polaris or Sonder which elevate them to being the masterpieces they are. All I know is that this is magical, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

@@Dragonfly9307 oh yeah, I wasn't even going to try going for the underlying lyrical themes and such I was looking at the two of them from a strictly technical standpoint and how their voices each sonically work with the music, basically comparing the two vocalists only in their role as just another "instrument" of the band Of course, there is so much more to each of their interpretations of songs and what they try to convey, I get that. Altered State was the first album I've heard from Tesseract, I was still in high school when it came out, it's an album I'm sure many people keep close to their hearts just like I do.

I think often the rhythms of tesseract are confusing because of their polyrhythmic nature. Often they are in 4:4 but have a different syncopated pattern from another time signature overlaid on top. This is what gives you the feeling of 'finding the one' and then losing it again, as sometimes they two time sigs overlap, and sometimes they are opposing and a little more disjointed. Thats the general sense I get, there's still plenty of tracks I can't pin haha, so I just get used to the patterns themselves and try not to overthink it :)

Dan Tompkins also spent a while in Skyharbor after leaving Tesseract which I think really let him loose with some melodic vocals. Their record "Guiding Lights" is also a must IMO.

If you haven't already heard it, then find "Anup Sastry" with the Doom cover "The only thing they fear is you".

I love Dan Tompkins and TesseracT but for me Ashe was the best vocalist for the band... but I've spoken to to Jay the drummer of the band and he hasn't spoken to Ashe since he was in the band but through the entire time that Dan wasn't in the band they remained in contact because all the of the band were mates with him... I personally find it a shame because I prefer Ashe's vocals with the incredible instrumentality of the band but Ashe's other band Voices From The Fuselage is sick as is Dan Tompkins vocals on the other bands that he's works with such as Sky Harbour

This reminds me of my first listen of the album. To be honest, I was dissapointed. I’ve followed Tesserract since their demo, and had the highest expectations. But, not an instant hit. However, more than enough to get my attention, and already on the second listen the album got to me. Big time. It is probably one of the albums I’ve heard the most alongside Tool and Leprous (oh, you gotta do more Leprous🙏🏻). Looking forward to more reacts from this album, there are some perfect songs up ahead🤟
