A coat checker at a museum meets a Ph.D. student.
OF THREAD AND ALMONDS is used with permission from Rebecca Manley. Learn more at ofthreadandalmonds.com.
Sullivan works at the coat check of a museum, where he has faithfully attended to his job for the past few years. He knows the regular museum visitors well, even taking the time to repair their coats during their visits -- a skill he picked up from his tailor father.
One day, a new visitor named Mandel comes to visit. She is a Ph.D. student in town for a limited time to research her dissertation. When she hands him her worn vintage coat -- the price tag still stuck in the collar -- the pair have instant chemistry. But they also have another surprising connection in common, though neither seems brave enough to make the first move... even as Mandel's time at the museum is coming to an end.
Written and directed by Rebecca Manley, this tenderhearted short romantic drama is about the magic of connection and love, found in unlikely places and made over unlikely connections. Though the story is set in London in the 1990s, its mellow, golden-toned cinematography and elegant eye impart a timelessness that matches its rich, eternally resonant themes.
Sullivan is a quiet, thoughtful character, and the film's storytelling takes on his characteristics, with a measured, precise construction of the plot and characters. Like Sullivan, there is nothing superfluous in the plot, with only the most essential details about character and circumstance included in the writing. But they are woven with great care, making for an absorbing narrative.
Actors Miles Yekinni and Sophie Harkness, as Sullivan and Mandel, richly embody their characters with great appeal. Their interaction captures the back-and-forth of instant intrigue and chemistry, with an inherent sweetness to their shared shyness. As their mutual fascination grows, it's easy to get wrapped up and invested in their budding romance and root for them as they inch together. But as Mandel's research stint at the museum wraps up, they either must act on their mutual connection or miss losing it altogether.
Nostalgic, beautifully crafted and engrossing, OF THREAD AND ALMONDS has another trick up its sleeve. Just as viewers think they're in for a straightforward romance, the ending reveals another dimension of Sullivan and Mandel's connection. Those hoping for a more conventional ending may be disappointed, but the twist that unravels is just as heartwarming, embracing and tender in its evocation of an undying, enduring love. Love is something that traverses eras, cultures and even death, even connecting us in unusual, unexpected ways that bring magic to everyday life.

So very sweet. I have a daughter who was this painfully shy as a child and preteen. She worked very, very hard to overcome her social anxiety and, time after time, she faced her fears, and learned to rise above them. And this was all her idea, not ours! By the time she was in high school, she was one of the most popular kids around. Now that she's in her twenties, she's got more Emotional Intelligence than anyone else I know. I guess my point is that, for some people, the simplest social interactions are like terrifying, mountainous hurdles. This video portrayed two such gentle souls with subtle & stunning accuracy. The photo at the end was pure magic. That's EXACTLY how the impossible becomes possible. Kudos to all!

@@underatedhockey4148 I'll ask her, & get back to you! She stills experiences social anxiety & hates being the center of attention, but she's come a long, long way from the little girl who hid in the closet & refused to participate in her preschool Christmas play, & always used to burst into tears if friends & family sang "Happy Birthday" while waiting for her to blow out the candles on her cake. She's in her twenties now, & doing fabulously. She lives many miles away, but we usually touch base on the weekends. I'll see what she says. I know it happened gradually -- baby steps -- like they say. I think she intuitively invented her own resilience traing program! Little by little, her small successes built up to form a pretty effective coping system -- like psychological & emotional muscle (& maybe even armor). I think if you are as sensitive as she is (& as you probably are), shyness doesn't ever completely go away. You just try to learn how to live as full & happy a life as possible -- to thrive, not merely survive, in spite of its influence. And sensitive people have so much to offer the world. We need you! Also, I'll bet you're incredibly intuitive, just like my daughter. This is a HUGE asset that will serve you well. I have no idea how old you are, but I bet I'm old enough to be your mother. Consider yourself part of my extended tribe! Hang in there, sweetheart.

It made me smile. I put my grand piano at my "friend's" storage and had to leave asap and stay with my ill mom in Russia. I stayed there for 6 months instead of the 1 month planned. I got back and there, and it was gone. A year later, I saw my piano in the local school :) I was so .. touched. I did not take care of it, neither did my "friend", but now they have concerts there. I just simply asked them to come by and play it. I often do :)

Ekaterina, that is very interesting and very cool to hear that something provident happened with your piano. In a school setting,,, it's hard to tell how many lives will be potentially enriched by it's existence. When I was living through some hellish times as a stepchild to a violent drunk, one of my teachers, Mrs. Gilbert in 6th grade music class was teaching us 'E, G, B, D, and F', and she took the time to reassure this red headed stepchild that time would take away the miseries I was dealing with and that I would be able to choose for myself what the future would hold for me. That was 1976 in Ft Knox KY at McDonald middle school. I have never forgotten her encouragement and I still look forward to each day for meaning, and succor. God bless you and yours.

Hi I have stopped breathing 7 times - And of course its nice being back and now even better seeing my grand children - First time it happened my children were young - jen 5 - leah 4 + lewis1 - But afterwards my brain don't work right - I'm very forgetful - I'm rubbish at retrieving names & memories ! - And I could draw- I was fair with a pencil & paper - But that too has disappeared ? But I'm waffling sorry ! - if someone says to me do you remember so & so? - Those memories will pop into my mind - or if I see a train or bus ticket from somewhere we've visited ? - That too will trip my memory back to that day ! - Or a concert ticket - That works too ? Seems my memories are still being stored - It's just my Libraian thats on strike ? - Very strange - I have a hoard of Small niknaks? - From when we go out with my grandchildren - They started to give me little presents when we're out - Strange thing is once my memories been tripped to a certain day or time I can tell them all about what happened that day ? - Maybe forget names - But it's good to know that my memories are still slopping around inside me somewhere ! - Those bits of paper or small niknaks the keys to unlocking my memories ? -Strange ! The joys of getting old ? Hey ?

GioiaFede I think the writer intended the viewer to wish for that, that was the hook, and so your expectation is completely understandable. The message was a different kind of love; the memory of his father who is no longer. They were both sensitive and gentle, and understood the meaning of their brief encounters. I think of the many people that have walked through my life, some just chance meetings. We engage in a good deed, or we’re lucky to have escaped a danger, and then we part. Life, duties, seems to require that of us. We shake hands, hug, or just catch each other’s eye as a good bye gesture, knowing we shall never meet again. It’s sad, but I know the world, my life, is better and richer for those encounters. It’s okay to part.

I have an orange and red flannel shirt, same color as the autumn leaves of the forests where I grew up near Roosa Gap Ridge in NY State. It was the last shirt my mom bought for me before I left America to do my own PhD program in Wales 8 years ago. A year after I left, my mom realized she couldn't live on her own anymore and sold our family house and wooded property and moved in with my sister in another state. Two years ago my mom passed away. I came back for her memorial and wandered around our old woods for a while beforehand, probably the last time I will ever get to be there, so I had to say goodbye to both that and mom. I still have that flannel shirt but I've worn it so much it's now completely in tatters, the lower half has completely fallen apart and the sleeves have long tears in them. But I still have it and still wear it sometimes as a house shirt, I can't bear to get rid of it b/c it's the last shirt my mom will ever buy for me.

It would've been even better if he saw her again ❤️ I love it that he got his Dad's coat back, but giving her £20, and saying wrap up warm, she still has to find another coat for that amount, and get to the second hand shop without freezing.

I might be in the minority here, but if someone took my coat without my permission I'd be pretty upset. That being said, if he would've asked and gave the reason why, I would've given him the coat. I know people like the twist ending, but I can't get over that part.

Well! What a twist! Initially I was disappointed that they didn't get together, then I thought how cowardly he was to leave her the £20 and an explanation instead of asking her face to face. I'm sure he could have won the coat and the lady if he'd played his cards without such deceit, then perhaps he already had someone... a very interesting ending, thank you!

@@salma_Nella22 When he mentioned that his father was a tailor she touched her necklace with the word ‘Mum’ in a sentimental way as though she could relate to his comment. That might be why she wasn’t upset when he ‘bought’ it from her, because possibly she understood what the coat would mean to him and maybe he noticed that she did that. Also, he pays attention to detail as shown with his sewing! Great film.
