Thanks for sparking a love that I have put on the back shelf for a long time. I love watching you and Trent and the rest of the flying Cowboys make these trips. This has been a dream of mine for most of my life. I have been in Aviation maintenance for over 35 years but just never was able to finish my ticket as raising a family and kids college was always priority. I have managed to maintain my love through model aviation and I love how you put the slow flight to use in full scale. Keep up the videos and be safe.

I like the high dez area. I spent the summers at my grandmas house in Susanville when I was a kid. I have been on the other side of the country for my whole adult life.40 years in Florida.Last time I was up there was 2011....we flew in and out of Reno in 1960’s. Wahoo ! So interesting to watch and nice to see an aviat husky joining the cubs and the foxes ! It is great to understand what all the skills needed behind the nice videos. When you compare your landings and Trent's for example, Trent is always very fast and you are always slower, is that due to differences between Kit Fox and Cub ? Thanks again for this Kevin, every time I watch videos from the Flying Cowboys my will to become a "bush" pilot increase. We can't do this in France due to regulations but near my place there is a small airpot with a flying school on small planes, need to spare some money !!! ;-)

Enjoyed the video, Kevin. I'm curious why you guys usually pop onto the main gear after landing. I understand at times when it's so rough or sandy you want to save the tailwheel, but seems like you do that for most every landing. I've been flying the Idaho backcountry for many years, and I was taught by the old timers to make full stall, full flare landings with as much brake as possible to keep from nosing over and to protect the prop......seems like your props come pretty close to the ground on some of these landing. Perhaps you could do a video that shows the differences in techniques and risk/benefit comparisons. Thanks.
@Bigtirepilot5 жыл бұрын
+Greg Otterson low tail wheel allows for great breaking with good visability. 3 pointing off airport is no bueno on your tail feathers. Most of Idaho is grass strips. That's different.

Question: Can you list the best 5 or 10 airplanes for low/slow STOL/bush flying where the emphasis is on getting into the smallest and most awesome spots in the boonies (with emphasis on desert and mountain environments)? Also give a rough price estimate to buy fully factory assembled when possible. I prefer a 2-seat airplane with side-by-side seats, but am open to front-and-back seats if its other advantages are significant enough.
@@Bigtirepilot : Thanks. Is it possible to buy something like Trent Palmer airplane assembled for $200K or less (can't go over $200K)? Is the airplane that takes-off in 6 feet a Highlander? Are you a STOL/bush CFI ?

At 1:35 “People are afraid of flying slow”. That would be me. Stall warning would mean more power and pitch for speed. If you have ever stalled an aircraft and crashed, you would understand. I love watching these videos, but I don’t think I could do it myself. My flying instructor instilled in me this saying. “There is nothing as useless as the altitude above you”. I’ll never tire of watching these videos tho.

What do you do to ensure no obstructions (overhead wires, etc.) when evaluating your landing sites? I appreciate this is youtube and you are showing the exiting landings, though curious to know if you do high/low reconnaissance before flying through the valleys or rivers? With so many folks who follow you and the rest of the flying cowboys, I'm sure a lot could benefit/learn from all the safety work you do that is not shown, so they don't just assume oh this is easy and lets just randomly fly into this new confined area I have never scouted....
@davidwhite86335 жыл бұрын
Jungle Johnny yeah, I was wondering that too. Wires, which can pop up over a weekend, have always been the bane of aerial applicators, low level rotary-wing types, ad hoc scud runners etc. Hope you keep up on the low recons regularly before landings.
@originaljunglejohnny5 жыл бұрын
David White I am from the moving wing brigade... was going to joke about my STOL performance :-). Wires and posts, and how quick they can pop up as you mentioned were ingrained into me from day 1 of learning to fly. One of the techniques was to make sure you check for wires every third thing in your mental or verbal check list (anything beyond third item repeated and significantly increases your chances of forgetting about it). My point here was I thought it would be helpful to the audience here (and interesting to me), on what reconnaissance the flying cowboys do for their improvised runways and scenic flights.
