Problem is (and a big one) that in many places, ie Europe, knife is prohibited to carry therefore even if you ignore the law and carry and some attack occurs and you use that knife saving you life, you will still be charged with carrying an item illegally that can be (and have actually) be used as a weapon. I just imagine the paradox: you might be legally justified for using that item for evading a potentially lethal incident but you will still be charged and convicted for carry a knife in the first place. Therefore your chance of seriously self defending is essentially impossible. That leaves you with two options : 1) die legally or 2) survive illegally.

The real issue in the UK and part of the EU is even if you defend yourself in your own home with just your open hands you still have a problem.. This question has been on my mind for about the last year : why would the population of the UK willingly allow themselves to be defanged? I’m going to have to research the culture, is it tied to their views on the monarchy? Or maybe the more powerful people who prop up the monarchy (the string pullers tend to not be in the limelight). Unarmed people are definitely easier to control.

I’m glad this man survived his incident. However, 40+ years ago when my peers and I graduated from the academy, it was strongly “suggested” by veteran deputies to buy a Buck Knife (the Folding Hunter) and keep it sheathed on our duty belt. The intent was to use it as a tool, but, also as a potential back-up weapon to save your life. In the days before knives became “tactical” it was understood that an edged weapon could be useful in a close quarter confrontation. Stay safe out there.

CRKT makes a big key that is a defensive tool. You add it to your key ring. I bought one for my wife and daughter. I gave them instruction on how to grip it and where to strike. As for a knife? If you are serious about your safety, carry one. Get some level of instruction. I taught knife fighting during my 28yr Army career. I am 65 now. Yes, you get old if you live long enough. That presents its own set of special problems. You bet, I carry a knife and a handgun...all the time. This man's story is a FANTASTIC illustration of the value of a knife. I grew up in an era when it was 100% normal for boys to carry a pocket knife. We are not talking about a conventional pocket knife. I keep a 5" fixed blade in a horizontal sheath on the belt. The opposite side has my gun. It is a crazy world out there. Training, fitness, diet, decent tools, periodic refresher instruction, all good things to keep you at your personal best. Yet earlier he says that after the guy punched his truck spoke to him and said “hey man what’s that about? We’re gonna back up right here in this store and- so any how” So it sounds like he did have a chance to announce that he’s a cop and that he wanted his details etc. instead he said “we’re gonna back up in this store and-“ and what exactly? 3. He says he had no indication of the intention of violence until the boyfriend ran up on him as he was getting out the truck… even though the boyfriend had already punched his truck. 4. Despite the fact he later says that the boyfriend ambushed him as soon as he was getting out the truck, he earlier said that he got into a fighting stance once out the truck and that it was the girlfriend attacked him from behind. You’re 100% right. This a bad cop. Sounds like he was driving like a thug and endangered the safety of a family that reacted by striking his vehicle in anger. He challenged them to a fight. Got the fight he asked for. Two good Samaritans came to the families aid. Not his. Understandably so, given everything they just witnessed.

It's main use in the kitchen: water melons, meat etc... But I do practice drawing and striking on a couple of old tires mounted to my gym wall. Because it gets so much general use, drawing it has become 2nd nature. Mid-60's here, grew up street fighting in North Texas, then bounced in a bar in my 20's, started formal Martial Arts in my 30's, earned Black Belt at 41. In all that time, I've never used a knife in an actual encounter. I've disarmed knives from attackers twice though and gotten lucky. A knife concerns me more than a baseball bat or a hammer.

Experience is a great advantage. I learned to fight with a knife from a group of coloured guys that started coming to a church that I went to. Because I went to visit them often they decided to teach me how to fight with a knife like they did, so that if ever I went to visit them and got attacked I could defend myself. They taught me to carry two knives. One for daily chores etc., the other ONLY for fighting. "Keep your fighting knife sharp as a knick in the right place can often do much more damage than a forceful stab." I also used to work as a volunteer with a Fire service triage group on new years eve in an extremely violent area of our city. I have seen first hand the damage that a sharp knife will do to the body in skilled and unskilled hands. Its frightening and messy. The gentleman in this video did exactly the right thing and saved his own life. What a frightening situation to have to face on your own. But he did it successfully.. That's all that counts!!

I don’t think it’s a double standard at all. He meant that he didn’t think of it as a self defense weapon because he’s used to something else as a weapon, a gun. We categorize tools like a knife is for packages, a rake is for the yard, etc. So just as if you were working in your garden and someone came along threatening to hurt you, it may take you a second to realize that you can pick up your shovel and defend yourself. But if someone were to come at you with a shovel, you know immediately that it’s a weapon being used against you.

@ of coarse it’s my opinion. And it’s my opinion that there are people walking around with items that the can used as weapons but momentarily forget that it can be used as self defense because that wasn’t the reason to carry it. When we train with a metal training knife, we have to alter our force level because they cause more damage than a rubber one. However, don't think you can get away with only caring a training knife and legally get away with it. Knife advantages: using it won’t make you deaf, you won’t accidentally hurt a bystander behind your target, you have unlimited cuts without reload, once deployed it won’t jam, easier to conceal without printing,maintenance is easier, you can practice anywhere, you can carry it nearly everywhere without legal trouble. For those in areas that purpose designed weapons are illegal, including knives, get yourself a hardwood crook cane and practice practice practice. You can carry a cane ANYWHERE. It’s a medical device. I stress HARDWOOD, not some cheap aluminum or softer wood cane. A cane is a 3ft stick in your hands at all times. There are plenty of videos on cane self defense to learn the basic strike templates. A cane gives you reach advantage over edged weapons. 4 yrs ago a large, intoxicated man threatened the woman I was with because she turned down his advances while I was in the restroom. I came out to a scene where he was cussing at her and threatening her. I tried to deescalate but he wasn’t having it. She told him one last time to leave her alone and he put his finger in her face and loudly threatened to slap the 💩out of her. I used the cane to bat his arm down and out of her face. I didn’t even use a full power strike, but it was enough to incapacitate his arm… most likely a hairline fracture at minimum by his pain response. He went from being an enraged threat to a teary eyed man clutching his injured arm that was seconds before aggressively in her face. He was removed from the establishment and my food bill was compt. Yes, the cane is an effective tool that is socially and legally acceptable anywhere.

I train with a mindset that everything is a weapon. Toothbrush is a weapon. A can of beans is a weapon. It's best to carry, but understand every day items can be used. I carry a knife always. Use what you have.
@timhallas427528 күн бұрын
I have carried a knife of some sort since I was 9. Knives have saved me from serious harm many times. Now I carry a gun, but the knife is there as well. A gun can fail, a knife will always make a hole.

Serious question: How do prosecuting Attorneys feel about knives for self defense? I would imagine they they have a dim opinion of stabbing people.
@RV-ardvark26 күн бұрын
I would like to emphasize that the primary purpose of a knife is to cut. So, when using a knife in self-defense, stabbing is the common use of a knife, but it is better to stab, then cut with the knife. So, stab in order to penetrate, then cut to inflict damage to stop your attacker.

Here is my lesson if I were him: shout before attacking someone with like "Stay away from me. Stop attacking me. Let me go." If you had cleared the situation to your surrounding public as it unfolded you would've avoid stabbing good samaritans.

Living in the UK, I repeat the message a previous comment made from the UK, regarding knife carrying being illegal, and even defending yourself - dependant how it is done - can be illegal. I therefore suggest carrying a pen/pencil. Many may laugh or poo-poo the idea, but still, a pointed object like a pen/pencil in the face, throat, or exposed fleshy part of the body can be the difference between getting away or getting hospitalised. Another idea - for those in countries that do not allow knives to be carried - if out walking anywhere with robust undergrowth/trees, look to pick up a sturdy stick to carry on your journey. Again, at least you'll something rather than nothing in your hand as a defensive item. Remember that phrase, "Better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick".

In short, a man gets into a life-threatening situation that could have been avoided by ignoring the car being punched. He could have just been the bigger man. He said he was trying to mind his own business and get home, yet he had the time to confront some random. What comes after that decision is still relevant to blade skills, however, this whole thing could have been easily avoided of he had just exercised basic self control in light of another's lack of it.

Betas vs alphas choose your choice. It’s kinda funny people will quote Edmond Burke All it takes for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing, and then make a statement like this 🤔

The problem is he got out of his car instead of going home sure the guy might of hit his car with his hand, but it's a person against a truck, so it wouldn't be justified enough. Kinda of jumping out of your vehicle to get into a fight. Good thing he had that knife thought he probably wouldn't be here if he didn't. Lesson learned the hard way.

I shudder when i hear people say “im safe, i have a knife” … ok, but if you’re not trained to use it, you may end up on the victim side. They also don’t think about how personal it is to have to defend yourself with a primitive weapon like a knife. It’s not pretty and it’s not instant like portrayed in a movie. Just like a gun, it’s a last resort tool.

Norway here, self defense is practically banned, youre literally not allowed to carry ANYTHING that is identified as a "weapon", even a knife. If you build a "safe room" here (basically a bunker you run into if you face a threat), its to withstand attemts to break into the room for 1 hour since you can expect it to take 1 hour for police to show up. Not 15 minutes, and as i understand, thats pretty much the same story in any country.

First, let us be clear it has been ruled at least three times in the Supreme Court... law enforcement has NO DUTY TO PROTECT, none, ever. Everyone, has an obligation to protect one another and in many cases the law allows us to do that. The badge does not make you special; it is just a job. Just do the job and leave your ego at home.

BS. Even in Communistfornia(CA), if your knife, regardless of your blade length is concealed, but your folding knife is folded, Its not READILY CAPABLE of stabbing. Quote-Unquote California's State Penal Code Statutes. Perfectly Legal to carry as such.

a lot of people think a knife attack is this big bollo stab attack to the gut. The reality is.. Knife fighters are fast. Anything they touch is cut. Your hand, your finger... Your blocks. If the night fighter is attacking any flesh they can put your blade on.. And they're real fast at striking you not gonna just grab that mans knife. Knife on unarmed... SUPER SUPER hard to defend against. Unless the guy with the knife is just really dumb.. .Reactive bolo swings and doesn't get how to keep it tight and strike at limbs ec.. Ok.. You might get the knife.. But knives absolutely suck for open hand defense. You've go nothing that can't be cut.
