love this build think I would have carried out 6 more feet with the concrete for the porch but thats just me lol have great day and keep up the great work and we are in a little better shape here in eastern ontario as far as fires but not out of the woods yet {pardon the pun }

Not sure if anyone still uses them, but, a combination square set to 9/16th of an inch might be easier than the tape measure. Great job on the build.

Hi Ken, Awesome to watch as always 😎 and waiting for trusses as well ... In regards to your solar panels you will never get full 400w power out of them even in best sunlight, there’s many different factors to consider. Cheers from 🇨🇦

Nice work at the remote cabin. The geo-thermo heating /cooling system run off a low voltage solar power supply will pay off dividends in the future. It looks like a well thought out off grid cabin.

Howdy Ken, You had me laugh out loud with your quick "Thank you, Thank you very much" Elvis impression. I would love to be working along side of guys like you and your crew. You all have fun together and get stuff done with smiles on your faces. Your solar panels were doing pretty good for what they are. It looked like you may have had your solar panels just slightly out of alignment with the sun. That would be one reason they weren't putting out what you expected. Any misalignment will diminish the panel output. The azimuth (side to side) looked correct because the shadow fell directly behind the panels. However it did look (from the camera angle) like the altitude elevation angle may have been off. When the elevation angle is correct, the shadow's size will match the panels dimensions on a surface at the same angle as the panels. I wouldn't stress too much about it. The sun moves through the sky during the day so realignment would be constantly required for maximum efficiency.

I seems to me that the truss mfg's that you're using are slow, undependable, and are using some questionable quality material such as with the Lumnah garage project. What would be the cost (including labor) cost to produce your own trusses vice purchasing these ready made trusses such as for this project??
@rupe53 Жыл бұрын
Going back (last year?) Ken explains the cost difference of about 20% more to build rather than buy them. I suppose the bottom line is about what the customer wants to do.

With the delays in getting ordered commodities, like trusses, wouldn't you be better off making the trusses yourselves? The current structure you are working on will be open to the weather and potential damage while you wait the two or more weeks for the trusses to show up. I remember you guys making trusses for another job you did. I just thought it might make the construction move more freely without the delays waiting for something you could build yourselves and have on hand ready to install.

Ken I think it is about time to go back to building your own trusses instead of shutting down your projects. A very old builder once told me back in the 1970’s that carpenters was getting very lazy relying on commercial trusses for the roof, and as he said it will one day become a rattle snake that will bite them and their jobs will be shutdown waiting on something they could build, and build much better. It looks like his prediction has come true, it is sad he did not live to see his prediction come true. Harry died about 15 years ago.
@kenskarpentry Жыл бұрын
Thanks. We actually just ordered the trusses last week because we’re redoing our schedule. So a couple more weeks or trusses would be normal.

Put a giant piece of clear plastic over the void of the roof and poke a hole in the middle and see how much water you can collect in a barrel. Why ? Just for the sake of making a video about how to collect water from the dew.
