A friend of mine from Lancaster shire used to work in the New Forest. And when I was visiting Winchester for the first time, he met me and took me to see the Rufus Stone in the New Forest. I thought that he was joking with me (about the Rufus Stone) until we got there. Anyway, I had never been to that part of England before. Usually when I flew to London, I would arrive and head for Scotland or Yorkshire. Loved Winchester. They even had statutes of the Hampshire pigs by the town hall.

Every couple of years I go and do a 3-day silent retreat in the Colorado foothills. It's at a Jesuit retreat house. You eat communally, have your own tiny dorm, and there is no technology or talking. My phone is normally stuck to my hand all day and night... and I love getting away from all that. You can have as much or as little of the religion part as you want. I'm an atheist but it's a beautiful place and the calmness that I feel there is amazing. I always have a bit of culture shock coming back to society though. I remember the first time I went and first thing I did was go to Starbucks after... you'd think I'd never been in a coffee shop the way I was a deer in the headlights! Anyway, I'm glad you took a digital detox... it's nice to reconnect with a partner and yourself! Thank you for sharing with us!

Great idea about being unplugged! We only unplugged for one day on the lake in kayaks. We go to a place called Baker Lake in Washington...no cell reception, we bring in our own water, even a shower...we love it!

Joe, I just looked up an off The grid cabin where I live in the United States. I really want to do this, for my next vacation week off! You guys don't have smores in the UK?? In the summer my parents have a fire pit and In the evenings when the sun's going down or when the sun is down. We like to sit around the fire pit and enjoy each other's company and the quietness and the sound of the fire before bed! Why haven't seen my parents in a long time,I live in a different state! But I'm from the South, and it's nice weather almost all the time. But in the summer time, it's extremely hot and humid. So we wait until the sun goes down to light a fire!

When I go to the country, one of my friends has an off the grid place, the cell service is spotty. So basically we bring everything we need with us, and enjoy a few disconnected days. The only noise is from airplanes high up in the sky. The first time I went what was strangely stressful was how quiet it was, no people and no cars

S'mores tips from an old boy scout: Toasted marshmallows taste much different than raw ones (the ones you ate were pretty raw, just warmed really, lol). You need to hold them near the coals (not the flames), rotating until they have a brown crust (like a crème brûlée) all around and soft gooey inside. Then you sandwich them between 2 graham crackers with a piece of chocolate (or digestives if that's what you have). The hot marshmallows will melt the chocolate (give it a minute), and then you eat them. Yum! :)

caution: when you see videos of Americans making smores, they are made by people with little smore cred. We need to roast the marshmallows over the embers, not against the burning flames. A slow, careful roast creates a nicely browned crust all over, as we turn the skewer, to create a molten interior. The flames just burn it all black. They've led you astray, but, please, try the smore again. Excellent video! I love how you kept coping with varied hurdles when simply trying to get a meal.

I love toasted marshmallows. I wasn’t patient with melting them and always get them to catch fire and blow it out & eat them then - very DE-LISH! I only just had my first s’more just a couple of years ago. I don’t remember hearing of s’mores when I was young but when I first did heard of them, I think that they were associated with Girl Scouts (maybe because they are more organized and prepared - then boys). Later the s’mores flavor was everywhere like pumpkin spice being associated with the start of the holiday season.
