Off Grid Ireland | Self Sufficiency | Making a door for FREE from scrap!

This week I take some scrap wood we were given last week and turn it into my workshop door. Making a door handle out of a beechwood branch. Pretty happy with the final result especially as it was freeee!

Pickles the van-
We first bought our Mercedes MWB sprinter van for £700 back in 2012 and converted it ourselves on a very tight budget! After 6 years of awesome adventures we needed to find a van that was better suited to us as a growing family of four and one all important van dog!
We all felt too attached to Pickles to get rid, so we stripped him bare and started again.
We cut the roof off to maximise our space and created what we now proudly call our home on wheels.

How did we get here
After years of saying one day, we finally realised that these opportunities don’t just land in your lap and if we seriously wanted to travel Europe as a family in our self converted sprinter camper van then we were going to have to be brave and make it happen.
We sold all our stuff, our house and our camper conversion business and landed in a dream come true.
Our timing may be a little of what with a global pandemic and Brexit round the corner but I know that when we set our minds and hearts to something we always make it work.
Now we’ve made this dream a reality there is no stopping us! our plan is to travel to new places, see new things, meet new people and learn new skills that will guide us on our journey of finding land and creating a way of life that sings to us, one where we aren’t bound to the banks, working every hour and outsourcing all of our needs. A simple way of life, with connection to ourselves, each other, the earth and our community.

The door is wonderful!!! I love the final touch of the wood handle. Lots of work, and it must feel great to sleep at night knowing you are creating the way you want to and using whats at your feet.

nomadicals, can you tell me,what kind of costs did the solictors charge to buy a place, and was there any hidden costs on top of the property price, thanks

It really varies from place to place. Stamp is 1% but anything else over 1 acre is valued separately and 7.5%stamp duty is applied to whatever you have over 1 acre. The rest is pretty standard. I used Alan Casey in Ennis. He is honestly the best solicitor I have ever dealt with. Complete legend
