👩🏼‍🍳 Ahoy!
Welcome to "Love Grub Galley" Had a hankering for burgers so whipped these gems up! Base.... Its surprising what you can do with a simple can of chickpeas!
⛵️ LOCATION: Castle Lagoon - Cowan Creek - Pittwater - NSW - Australia
33º36'S 151º13'E
"Love Grub Galley" - Chickpea & Halloumi Burgers
Ingredients: I used - makes roughly 6 depending on size you opt for.
1x Can Chickpeas drained/rinsed
1x small kumara (sweet potato)
2 tsps cumin
1 tsp smoked paprika
1 tsp chilli flakes
2 gloves garlic
1/3 cup chopped parsley
1/2 cup plain flour or breadcrumbs
1/2 block of Halloumi
Salt & Pepper
Method:
Add chick peas to blender and blend to your preferred texture
Peel and cut kumara into cubes boil until soft
Add chickpeas, garlic, herbs and spices to a bowl and mix
Add softened kumara and mash in with a fork
Add flour and combine (if you feel the texture is to wet add more until you are happy with it, you want to be able to work this into paddies)
I used about 3 Tbsps of mixture to make one paddy. But make them smaller if you wish, Coat with flour and set aside.
***I normally cool down my mixture in the fridge before starting to work it with, if you have time I’d suggest doing this, refrigerate for around 20mins
Cook paddies in oil olive on a med heat on one side until golden brown / flip carefully and repeat - around 2-4 mins.
Heat buns and fill with your favourite burger fillings.
Enjoy!!!

Chickpeas and other similar legumes seem like a pretty useful type of food for a cruising sailor, especially if you don't have refrigeration. Easy to store long term and nutritious! Thanks for the cooking demo!

that recipe seems really yum , gotta try that even though I am a meaty dude, trying to expand my culinary horizons a bit =) About that Sweet potato / Yams thing , southern US and parts of Canada has long called sweet potato Yams , though they look similiar they are from two different families Yams (Dioscoreaceae) and sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) . So it makes perfect sense why James refers to it as Yams.

Ha. At the time of this filming we only had one good working GoPro if you saw my first episode you’ll notice the downward shots, I also don’t want every video have the same format, it’s hard enough with limited angles in a tiny space 😂 so I figure I’ll mix things up. As I know I’d bore easily watching the same format haha thanks for watching.

The great yam/sweet potato/whatever you called it debate. Everyone I've ever known in the PNW of the US calls what you have there a "yam" . The lighter more yellow flesh w lighter skin one a "sweet potato". I have read several articles that say that what I call a "yam" is a "sweet potato" and visa versa. Even the stores label them wrong...or right. Personally, I prefer a "sweet potato" because "yams" are too sweet.

Haha isn’t English a funny thing. We all have such different names for things depending on where we are located in NZ this one beautiful root vegetable 🍠 has three names… I mean talk about confusing the poor guy!

I loved watching that, Rhonda. Im looking at getting a pull cord chopper, and an ice maker for the Caribbean. Time to throw out the bread maker that I never use and try making bread from scratch. I think that it is hello Halloumi time, too. I agree with you that you need an alternative form of cooking. A single Alcohol burner costs almost nothing, and the fuel is safe. As well you could have a railing BBQ and save electricity cooking on that as well. As Edna Mode said, luck favors the prepared Darling.

Thanks, excellent!! The hand blender will not disappoint, use mine so frequently for many applications. We have two other sources of cooking onboard just in case, but can’t imagine we’ll ever completely lose all power as we also have a generator onboard to top up if need be. A bbq would be neat, but not sure we would use it enough to warrant the space or usage… I always take these things into account when considering alternative options. Do I really neeeeeed it… or do I just want it, can I live without it. Especially with such limited space. Inside and outside the boat. Again, thanks for being here, and get yourself some halloumi!!! 🤤

@@LoveGrubGalley If your only cooking method is electricity then you are taking a risk. I don’t want to scare you with the “L” word, but if you get struck by it, in an instant all of your remaining electricity could be needed for radio and navigation, if that is still possible, or pumping. My factory in Sydney got struck by “L” once. It blew up a number of my favourite things, and a lot of really expensive machinery in the factory next door.

Like I said we have two alternatives cooking methods onboard which are not electric. Touch wood, we’ll be good.
