I closed the back side of the cabin with larch boards and installed the outline of the windows all made out of raw boards with live edge. I like the final look it gives to the cabin.

Hi Nik..very good to see you working on the house today! I've watched from the beginning, learning each time, wondering how, and feeling better about life in general because of it. Not sure how you accomplish all that, and build a house. From scratch. By hand. No blueprints. May I just say..the level of genius you have put into each log is truly astounding, and borderline miraculous. Thank you, my gifted friend..for sharing your gift so generously, and with kindness and humility. Best wishes always...

Well Nik, I am so happy to start seeing more of you working on your cabin. I do remember something about trouble with your computer, but still waited for your return. Now, the windows really set it off.......until today. I LOVE what you did to the back windows. I'm really tempted to recommend doing the whole house like that. It is absolutely beautiful!!!!! Now at first you were blowing what mind this 68 yr. old old woman has left. I had to fast forward to see what was really going on & then go back to watch the work. It is very beautiful & it is wonderful you involve your family work to make it a real home. I can hardly wait to see you start on the inside.....with the plumbing & electricity. Yesssss. Well, I'll quit ranting. I'm waiting patiently for more updates. Take care you & your family. Jamie & Paddy (my dog) in Tennessee, USA

Nik, your editing skills make these videos so enjoyable to watch. I especially like how you have the sound track continuous when you are editing smaller pieces together, like the draw-knife sequences and the sanding sequences. The lively, sped up action with a normal speed soundtrack is very enjoyable, and so much better than a simple choice like background music. Your home is turning out so very nice. Thanks for recording it all so that people all over the globe can enjoy something that our grandfathers did in the past. Well done!

Wonderful porogress! One problem: you placed flat boards under the siding where it ended above the window. Well, the edges of the flat boards stick out beyond the siding. This will catch water and run it back to the top of the window frame. At the very least it will hold water and promote rot. Trim the edges flush to the siding or just inside the siding line. Don't give water an easy way to get behind the siding and you'll be fine!
@furaosentu
@furaosentu 2 жыл бұрын
I wonder whether the whole wall, built up like this, is waterproof at all. I'd suspect some of the water to flow between the second and first layers of the vertical planks. I guess we'll find out in a few years. At least it looks quite simple take care of once the problems manifest.
@cybermanne
@cybermanne 2 жыл бұрын
@@furaosentu I don't think the facade panel needs to be waterproof. There should be some sort of membrane underneath that is the real waterproofing, and the panel is mostly there to protect the membrane from UV and wind and such. The way Nik did it seems like normal "board and batten", which I don't think is unusual. But the windows are always tricky. Here in Sweden there is usually a strip of metal flashing that runs under the panel along the top of the window. This metal then comes out at an angle so that the water pours out from the window is there is water behind the panel.
@Thundergod001
@Thundergod001 2 жыл бұрын
@@cybermanne I watched an episode of a British TV show on building. A man who had built his home mostly by himself, ran into this very problem. He forgot ( or didn't know ) to install that metal flashing you describe here and it leaked. They were able to back track and install the flashings, but it was a lengthy repair.
@cybermanne
@cybermanne 2 жыл бұрын
@@Thundergod001 Interesting. I'm not sure those flashings (or whatever they are called) are always needed though, depending on the type of window and how the paneling is done.
@pouncepounce7417
@pouncepounce7417 2 жыл бұрын
@@furaosentu Water always gets behind them, but they are off the wall so air can get behind it. The only thing i would do different is cutting the boards on the lower end angled not 90 degree so drops fall of more easy, I am not sure if he did, was not easy to see how much degree he puld on the lower ends. When you build such stuff you always assume water will find its way in, it always does, the trick is to build so water has an easy way out and does not stay.
