Interesting design to get spring water uphill to your homestead, we live off-grid in southern Tennessee and have a spring that runs through our property year round and has a really strong flow, so we had a contractor come in with a backhoe make the stream wider and deeper and then lined it with a heavy rubber pond lining and then rocked it. I had the contractor shave off some of the side of the hill so the water has less distance to travel up hill. For now I'm using a gas powered jacuzzi pump to move the water from the pond to our storage tanks which are a combined 2000 gallons. We also have a rain water collection system that is 500 gallons. It's not a perfect system but for now it's doing what it was designed to do.

If it's got a 1gpm or better flow in the summertime you might get it to run a ram pump.

As if squirting the totes from 10 paces weren't enough proof... 50 foot of head pressure on water like that equates to about 22 PSI. That's enough to blow the seals out of any garden irrigation system! AKA Perfectly fine! Cool video and cooler setup!

Thanks so much for making these videos! Our land is so similar to yours. We're in the blue ridge. I've been wanting to dig out one of our springs for so long but it seemed like a huge under-taking. After seeing your set up, it feels quite doable. We have a well but it's useless when the power goes out. Now I'm inspired to head up the mountain with the shovel :)

I'm glad to hear it! We're in the Blue ridge as well! I'm not much for Doom and gloom but water is a heck of a thing to be reliant on power for... At least the way things are turning around us. I'm certainly not the most fit man on planet Earth and we're on an extremely tight budget... but I was able to do it and I was able to do it in just 2 days.

Wonderful that yall have a spring on this property. Personally, I would want a protected run for the pex. Something as simple as running small cut down trees along the sides and loosely covering with dirt or leaves, just a little protection from sun damage. Thanks for the share!

@SteepintheWoods Жыл бұрын
I can't remember all the facts off the top of my head but I gather it's a lot more UV stable than even I thought. But come fall if the leaves don't bury it I will have to do some work on it myself.

Just like your former setup! It wouldn't hurt to cover more ground around the spring with plastic to try to keep surface water from entering. It's a challenge to completely seal it off. Very nice water pressure! Should be around 20+ PSI.

@SteepintheWoods
@SteepintheWoods Жыл бұрын
I'm surprised you picked up on that. And the answer is yes LOL that is a vent for the second barrel. I had originally filmed how I set up that barrel before I realized there was much better ways to do it.. however strange or no, it does work.

PEX is not intended for UV exposure. Have you had any issues with it?
@EthanPDobbins
@EthanPDobbins 2 ай бұрын
Some pex can take it but the black polypropylene is best for this use. If you buy it at lowes 3 hundred foot rolls has a discount making it even cheaper. 1/2 inch can work but 3/4 is better.

What about winter time? What will keep yhe system from freezing?
@SteepintheWoods
@SteepintheWoods Жыл бұрын
The idea is to bury it like most other water lines. But it's possible to insulate it with foam tubing, as well as leaving it dripping when it's coldest, provided you have enough volume. The barrels themselves won't freeze nor will the main feed line going from spring to barrel, since it's always flowing (generally speaking) not really sure what we're going to do with ours yet.. haven't made it that far
@tennesseeterri
@tennesseeterri Жыл бұрын
From what I remember, the PEX tubing is not uv resistant. May want to check on that.
@sam-and-angela
@sam-and-angela Жыл бұрын
That's only an issue with chlorinated water. PEX is UV stable and resistant... according to the internet! :) "When PEX piping is exposed to UV light, it consumes the chlorine-inhibiting anti-oxidants which protect the pipe from chlorine induced oxidation. As these chlorine inhibitors get consumed, the piping is left vulnerable to attack from chlorine in the water. PEX piping that is indoors is also susceptible to this oxidation. One study found that UV exposure from fluorescent lights for eight hours is equivalent to one minute of sun exposure. According to at least one PEX manufacturer’s installation instructions, contractors are advised “Do not install … within 5 ft. of direct view from fluorescent and LED lighting without protecting the pipe with a UV-blocking material.” Plumbers that encounter pinhole leaks and failures in PEX plumbing systems may attribute those failures to UV exposure. Technically, that’s not correct. UV light doesn’t actually cause the failure but consumes antioxidants in the material, accelerating the rate chlorine degradation that would have otherwise still occurred. The failures aren’t “UV failures,” per se but chlorine failures that may or may not have been accelerated by UV exposure. They would have occurred with or without UV light, just in a different timeframe."

how you keep your water pipes from freezing?
@SteepintheWoods
@SteepintheWoods Жыл бұрын
There are several options for that. You can insulate or bury the pipes. Or if you don't have the time or manpower to do that you can place some barrels by your house and leave the spring flowing. However it wouldn't be gravity fed at that point so you would need a pump. But that's an easier option than bearing it especially if like us your spring is 500 ft away.
@EthanPDobbins
@EthanPDobbins 2 ай бұрын
@@SteepintheWoods to save digging you wanna set the cistern close to the house as you can while still maintaining good head pressure then your spring lines don't need buried much if at all. I bury them across roads and just let the leaves and whatever washes onto them from the rain bury them but since it's flowing 24/7 and the pipe isn't all the way full it doesn't freeze. The pressure line can be dug in as shallow as 6-12 inches then use a mattock to pull more dirt over top of it if you want more.
