For a list of what we have used in our system please see:
UK: kit.co/theoffg...
US: kit.co/theoffg...
We live completely off-grid and are in the process of installing a DIY solar power system. In this video I will show some of the wiring process involved in setting up our off grid solar power system.
(Please note, I am not a qualified electrician and this is a ‘how we did it’ video rather than a ‘how to do it’ video.)
This is the forth upload about our off grid solar power set-up, with following videos covering:
PylonTech batteries
Using Victron Connect to update firmware and change settings
Videos following our journey so far:
Installing solar panels:
• OFF GRID SOLAR PANEL I...
Installing rails and clamps for the solar panels:
• INSTALLING OFF GRID SO...
Victron Quattro 10,000VA 48V inverter:
• Installing VICTRON 48V...
If you would like to see more videos about our solar set-up, or learn more about our off grid life, consider subscribing to our channel. We would love for you to join us on our journey!
Thanks for watching!

Thanks for this video, glad you went with 48v. An you have made a nice job of your installation. I live in on the Beara peninsular southern Ireland, an our weather is a little bit difficult as well. I'm over 80 an live alone so do not need such a large set up as yours. You are right about getting stuff in the UK an Ireland, quite unbelievable, unfortunately Orland is about 50 plus years behind the UK, One thing I will say though, don't run yourself down with your ability, you are your own family an DOING A GREAT JOB. Much love an good wishes to you an your family. M

Folks there are some very good charge controllers out there But I recently purchased a VICTRON CHARGE CONTROLLER 100-30 There are no words to explain this product but I can tell you in my words that the quality & the workmanship of this product is second to none. I am so taken back on how beautifully this equipment performs. The reviews of this product is right on and I highly recommend on a scale 1 to 10 9-1/2 seven STAR

Hi Great video. Not sure if you have a smoke alarm in the barn loft, but I would advise putting one in, it will give you time to react to any fire situation, ie get the Fire Service on route, rather than finding the whole building well alight then calling the Fire Service, (massive delay) also get the what three words app on your phone, because you being remote they may get delayed in finding you! ( past experience as a Firefighter). If you have WiFi in there then I would go for a Nest fire alarm as that will notify you on your smart phone if it actuated. Lithium reacts violently with water and gives off Hydrogen gas!! Don’t want to scare you, but watch some video involving Lithium batteries. 🔥🔥🔥 Stay safe and keep the videos coming. 👍

@@The_OffGridFamily I have the equipment to be off-grid although I need to double the battery bank size and increasing the inverter size from 3kW to 4kW would be most useful some times. Apart from the inverter I am also all Victron gear. The last 5 days I have been 100% off-grid except for a couple of hours in the morning of day 2. It's summertime here so the aircon is quite a drag on the system. I do occasionally look at others to get ideas and improve from them. That said while I have not released a video myself for quite a while, it is because the system is working and there's no dramas, nor have I had the money to do any substantial upgrades. I am hoping to change all that during 2022.

Great job, good vid & I think you have done well for a non sparky, and a nice touch with the black & red isolators too. My only real criticism, more so than concern, is where you have main cables crossing over each other to the 150/35? MPPT near the cerbo gx and at the battery distributor, it is generally best if you can route your wiring so that no opposite polarities cross each other, but if you must do this consider another layer of insulation, corrugated tubing, whatever for extra protection in these instances. The main MPPT cables near the cerbo are pinned fairly close to each other, but then fuses should be blowing before this becomes a problem. Cheers

Great Video, you beat me to it. I'm currently building almost exactly the same Victron setup as you in Scotland, but struggling to find fuses at a reasonable price. Do you happen to remember where you found fuses suitable for 48V system?
@The_OffGridFamily
@The_OffGridFamily 3 жыл бұрын
Hi. Thanks for your comment 😊 Finding the fuses was the most difficult part of the project for us. Some places sell fuses that say they are for 48V DC and when they arrived they were 32V DC but with a 70V AC rating. In the end, because of lack of choice of low amp DC 48V fuses, we had to up the wire size so the fuse would protect the larger wire. We got our fuses from www.batterymegastore.co.uk/ but they were over £28 each so still not ideal. We used a DIY solar forum throughout the project, and one guy on there altered his distributor so it would take midi fuses. If you have the time and patience to do that it could be an option 😊 All the best with your project 👍

I’m not a fan of disconnect switches. I’ve measured loss through them and arcing when they get older and more oxidation happens. Even with the best of them. We isolate the positive and negative because of the factors of EMP well feedback through either pole the other is we also have to worry about things like ground sharks because of electrical atmospheric fluctuations which tend to happen above thousand feet or so becomes more and more of a thing the higher up you go believe it or not at 10,000 feet you suffer a 70% chance of being struck by lightning afternoon standing on top of the Tibetan plateau to give a point of reference or widows peak for those who from The US so the power packs can be overloaded either way and you can disconnect them and be safe on all ends of your system DC power can be very dangerous for people if things are not disconnected properly in high amperage high voltage or high wattage scenarios I put all of those out because all three of those are the same thing on the ohms triangle think so I hope I didn’t step on any toes I thought I would relay why disconnects are important everywhere on every device including every battery it also goes along way to take pictures of your system so if there is ever a fire and you need to account for insurance for the fire departmentYou can give them what for because you did it right and have proof there are people in Australia who have gotten sued vastly because they stepped outside of guidelines and did not necessarily have a safe system then the upgraded and overload neighborhood now nobody wants to be these guys good luck and wire safely thank you for your video

1. You never put in 2 independent isolarors, if you disconnect the neutral, the live must also disconnect in the same action. 2. You should have fuses on your battery cables and not have those isolators after the victron units. If there is a problem, you need to isolate your batteries from everything, you may need to disconnect 1 battery bank from the other for maintenance or if a battery has swollen, in this config you are more likely to have a electrical fire.
@The_OffGridFamily
@The_OffGridFamily 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment 😊 Each battery is fused in the lynx distributor with a 125A mega fuse. The isolation switches are sold alongside the Pylontech batteries by our supplier which is why we went that way. This is a back up as our batteries can be switched off 👍

That was not a wise thing to do as the case and everything in it is not rated to withstand that high voltage or protect actually You. Yes it can withstand 1000A but the issue is the higher the voltage the more insulation grade you need to protect everything around it from arcing. There is a reason for this combiner boxes and maybe also a reason why there hard to get for certain configurations. A high Voltage DC arc will not stop arcing like AC. It it can easily start a fire as you have a wooden wall behind it which is then not protected enough when you use devices which ware not made for this high voltage. Please read the documentation of Victron and do not misuse their devices. Please, please isolate with at least 1000V capable heat shrinking and especially the outlets of the power in to prevent arcing, and yes it can arc even at that distance with enough voltage. Ask me, how I know! So please, if you don't want to change to correct combiner bars please add insulation! Be also reminded that probably the black and red bigger cables are NOT rated for this high voltage! Check your cables please and if they are not rated for at least 1000VDC you HAVE to change them to correct PV cables because they ARE rated for this high voltage!

Cables lugs etc are readily available in large quantities for various auto electrical suppliers often on a next day posted basis. Personally never use Amazon for any shopping! Partly because of there attitude to people, waste and the world and partly because there are so much more expensive for everything I've look for! Also the quality really isn't there!

We can understand why people wish to avoid Amazon ☺️ In our experience we have found the customer service pretty good and have had more problems using auto electrical suppliers, who have often sent us the wrong fuses or not been clear on the spec of items 😩

@@The_OffGridFamily must of got a bad company, which is unfortunate as I order all my parts from very helpful small businesses and you pay a fraction of Amazon prices.

Yes probably bad luck on our part. We have had some positive experiences with small companies too and tend to go for a bit of a mix and match approach 😊

Thanks for your comment 😊 To be honest, by the time the extinguisher goes off at 69 degrees our main focus will be saving the barn 😳

Thanks for your comment 😊 This was one of our earlier videos and we had a lot to learn sound-wise. Hopefully you’ll find our more recent videos better in terms of audio (although we are still learning!) 👍

Nice video. i'm personally working on upgrading my 5kW Victron Iverter with another Victron 5kW so total same as you '10kW' but it is 24V system. I have one suggestion 1. Don't place that small victron's enegry hub on battery circuit but place it on that left side after those DC switches. reason is you for sure don't want to have it on right side where you can't disconnect it in case of some issue.. Yes it is nice thing to know what is happening. But for sure not the best 2. I would suggest to buy BMS from Victron this way you will know exact state of charge. I didn't see it there so for sure you need it ..and it cost about 150-250 Euro .you don't need fancy one with Bluetooth..once normal that you can connect to your victron' hub will do.. 3. I didn't see it there but i think you can connect together your charges with lan cable so they communicate with each other and also connect it to your hub....you can watch then your results over official side vrm.victronenergy.com/

Thanks for your suggestion 😊 By ‘energy hub’ do you mean the Cerbo GX? Just want to make sure we know exactly which component you mean 😊 Our batteries actually come with a built in BMS so we aren’t able to use another. Victron say this in their document about combining their products with Pylontech batteries 👍 All the best with your project 😊
