Yes! I have the full flat grind version of the Ridgeback, and I love it. It's not super beefy, so I'd pair it with a hatchet for wood prep, but for everything else and doing what a knife should do, mainly cut, it's superb. It's like a lightweight slicey version of my Architect knives AK 5.5

Wow, you have an AK 5.5? How does it perform? Can it handle heavy-duty tasks, like chopping/batoning?
@torfinnjohnsrud793
@torfinnjohnsrud793 17 күн бұрын
@@janickgonzalez8900 it is a beefy knife in it's own right. Plenty of stock thickness, behind the edge thickness, and tip strength for batonning and chopping, although it's a bit short for chopping. Combine that geometry with the 3V steel I chose, and it's a tough tank of a knife. I would probably take a small knife companion such as a mora basic or a folding knife/Swiss army knife to take care of fine/intricate tasks
@janickgonzalez8900
@janickgonzalez8900 17 күн бұрын
@torfinnjohnsrud793 thanks a bunch mate, it really helps. I've been meaning to buying an architect knife, but I'm still deciding between the ak 5.5, or 6.5, as well as between magnacut or CPM 3v... but I'll probably go with magnacut, cause I'm afraid of 3V oxidizing on me.
@torfinnjohnsrud793
@torfinnjohnsrud793 17 күн бұрын
@@janickgonzalez8900 My personal take on the 5.5 vs 6.5 is that they both have almost the same cutting edge lengths... You're just further from it on the 6.5. combine that with thicker stock and it's a better chopper, but less good at other things. So it's up for you to decide what finger choil and blade thickness you want. As for blade steel that's definitely a person specific choice. Personally I didn't want to spend on the magnacut, and I mostly would be using it in dry environments. I was tempted to get the 1095 actually because I do love that steel, but ended up with 3V. Good luck with your choice!

I forgot to mention that I did purchase a Vaer field watch for Christmas. Same item with a quartz movement and not solar powered. I also purchased a Militado ML05 38mm Men Watch VH31 Quartz. Have not examined either yet. Purchased a Bertucci DX3 earlier this year and love it. These are three field watches working on quartz batteries. There are so many considerations: do you want to have the spare band when you buy, do you want a sapphire crystal, and how about the depth capability or the protection of the hand. I keep track of the specific batteries as spares and have the inexpensive watch tools. Price. Some buy an automatic Hamilton field watch for hundreds of dollars. I am not out to impress.. All the watches I have purchased within the last 5 years don't approach the price . . and I enjoy everyone. Some people just buy a Casio g-shock digital and go with it.

Honestly, Taiwan manufacturing is right up there with Japan. There's a definite distinction between Taiwan and China. From bikes to phones to the best production knives from Spyderco, they produce top quality gear.

I've had absolute dogshit taiwanese Cold Steels with uneven bevels and lower hardness than stated. China can produce 30 different qualities. They even ask you which one you want, when you start producing there. There's not a definite difference between China and Taiwan. China just produces more stuff from the lowest to top tier quality.

a while back, I was gifted an Off Grid Knives Ridgeback 5.5 in the Cryo D2. I have had a few chances to take it out and get it dirty before my health reared up and slapped any idea of the woods out of my head for a while. I really enjoyed the overall performance, but the handle was a bit small for my XL leather glove hands. while I was able to get a full 4 finger grip, my pinky was butt up against the lanyard, and I wound up taking the lanyard off, because there was really no room to choke back for a chopping motion anyway. for knives I don't plan on chopping with I don't much use a lanyard. I did like the geometry of the blade, the taller face made thin slices for feathersticks very easy. I tend to "test" the edge on my folders after sharpening by feathersticking a toothpick, and have done so with a few of my fixies as well ( one notable was the Apache Dawn, mostly because my son said I couldn't. he was mistaken) the 5.5 did a fairly decent job, I had to restart once, because my hand twitched ( part of the nerve damage I have, it's an ongoing issue) but on the second attempt, I was able to get quite a few very fine feathers, and that toothpick was added to the collection. All things considered, I would whole heartedly recommend this as a budget option to someone who just wants a reliable piece of steel on their belt when they head into the woods.

Off & on over the years, I have revisited looking at this brand's offerings. The 'Backcountry' model is the one that I keep coming back to, yet have not pulled trigger. I am pleased to see overall thumbs up in your review here. Looks like the model in this video has potential for a good river knife selection... fish, game, meal prep. Rope & straps, etc.

I wish I'd had a similar experience with this knife. Unfortunately, the tip broke early on and it started rusting pretty quickly just from carrying it in the environments I work in. In my opinion, it's worth paying a little more for something that will actually hold up. So far, Tkell Knives has been my go-to for fixed blades. Great video, God bless.

I've had 2 x Off Grid Knives folders in my collection for a few years now. Never had any problems. Definitely on the 'over built' and heavy side so not great for EDC but if you need a blade for hard use they will definitely get the job done. I'm not a massive fan of D2 for fixed blades over 3.5" HOWEVER for the price and based on your testing it should be fine for all but the hardest tasks. I like the design - very versatile. A massive bonus is the sheath. Sheaths have become deal breakers for me - I'm sick & tired of having to get aftermarket sheaths. Sharp blades all.

I wish they would have made this in 14c28n or even Nitro V, because I would have been all over and if that were the case. I'm not a huge fan of D2 even with a 62 Rockwell rating. I love everything about the knife except the steel choice. Dude imagine if Esse created this knife at 5/32 even that would be Amazing.

1. excellent review 2. excellent choice in 2024 3. 30 years ago, there wasn't a choice like this. At that time, I was recommending the Ontario Old Hickory butcher knife with an inexpensive Mexican-made Ka-bar sheath for a female who would not be chopping logs or whittling. 4. My suggestion was rejected and the customer obtained a Glock field knife and had it re-profiled for his companion who absolutely had no combat experience, had never camped out or split a log. Always remember, the skill is in the person and not the tool. Also, the tool with you is more valuable that the tool at home when you are away from home. So, I gifted Moras and inexpensive folders to relatives who have no survival skills for their cars. Two of the relatives had car accidents in 2024 with the cars being totaled. So, I gave them restored multi-tools for their cars.

I really wish people would stop using knives as fire starters. If you have room for the ferro rod then you can easily tie a 90 square piece of steel to it to throw sparks. It just doesn’t make any sense why you would carry a ferro rod without a small piece of steel (that’s not your knife) to throw some sparks. It’s as silly as testing how well your knife works as a screw driver.

A small piece of steel is harder to use when you're freezing with limited finger dexterity. Having a knife with a full handle, and more surface area makes the job easier. This is of course a worst case scenario, but still better to practice those skills before you actually need to use them.
