Very nice work there, Lamar. I’m thinking of getting one of these for our house. Wishing you well.

This is what I need for the winter. We get a lot of wind in winter but not so much in the summer. But for some reason I thought you couldn’t use wind and solar together.I remember that guy from years ago 😊

Wind and Solar can be used together. Many Battery Chargers have Wind and Solar inputs!

Mine is sixteen feet high, but I live on a hill, lol. After high winds I put lock nuts behind the hub. I've had this watts meter on it for a week, it's made 7.18 kwH. Most I have seen is 658 watts from this 600 watts B & C. I used a three foot piece of angle iron lag screwed to the rafters, and I poured a concrete base stub to set it on. Most of the time it makes between 100 and 200 watts. I may have to bring a few of my solar panels inside, I have too much power when the wind blows and the 🌞 sun is out. I'd rather let it spin than put the brake on. The brake won't hold in a high wind, the wind overrides it, and the wiring gets really hot. Rather than burn the windings out, I let mine spin. At 5 : 15 a.m. it's showing 25.0 volts on the twenty big marine batteries. The wind didn't blow at all last night. I think it may be the first time since I put it up five weeks ago. I was down to either buying an Airex or the one I have, it was just a toss up between the two. It helps the most when it's cloudy, rainy and windy. It really helped in March.

Can you change the blade length? Good that you get that much wind. Mine mostly sits there doing nothing.
@davidpotter9462 Жыл бұрын
Well, it has the 28 inch blades. Maybe that's why it turns so fast, lol. I think it has taken some 80-90 MPH wind gusts without damaging anything. There were gusts up to 100 West of here about 75 miles. It would have been broken if it was going to break. If I had used the charge controller that came with it, it probably would have burned the windings out trying to brake it. Better to turn on a big load. That slows it too.

Thanks for the info. Lamar. Do you have to run that through a controller, like your solar panels and can a windmill be hooked to the same battery bank as your solar panels or do you need a separate battery bank. Thanks for any help. I really appreciate it!👍😁
@solarcabin Жыл бұрын
It depends on the model. Mine has a built in 12 volt controller so it can just be attached straight to the batts. Do you have a model and brand and maybe I can help find out?

Have you investigated the solar roof shingles? If I were by a river, or brook, I'd even use a mini water turbine system.
@solarcabin3 жыл бұрын
I have not tried the solar shingles. I like solar equipment I can get replacements for if needed and my system is small. A water turbine will work if you have fast moving constant water.
@exposefrauds39293 жыл бұрын
@@solarcabin Ok. Just curious. I haven't seen any feedback on how they work. I know a guy in VY that uses a small water turbine in a small brook behind his battery shed. Redundant systems for backup. Perfect size wind turbine for your digs! I've seen home made ones, made with car alternators, etc. Necessity is the mother of invention!

Hey I'm not shure if you live in an area were you may need heat. But I live here in Maine started building an off grid place. And of course it's cold as hell everyday in the winter. anyways, I purchased a cheap Chinese deasal heater. that's what I looked up to find info on this heater. an installed it in my 30' camper I didnt hook it to the heating ducts, i but if I did it would be a whole lot better. it runs on 12volts fill this thing up only 2 gallon tank, and runs for four days 4 days steady on a tank. on 2 gallons of deisal and ran it 2 days steady on a car battery no re charging. this thing is amazing, in my book I love it"" I'm also going to pick one up that heats water I'm purchasing anouther just incase something fails but check it out I spent $120.00 for my first one I can now get them so much cheaper now . They also have a self contained one also. But I lived in that camper during covid all winte to save money for lumber and was warm as hell . it has a thermostat set it forget it" I'm going to say I know in that cabin you got. you would love it. Also I never had to put it on high I ran it on low once the place was warmed up. Best of luck Bruce. My email is if you got questions. I do not sell these just real life situations. Saved me a ton of money and my back . I suggest if your thinking aboat purchasing pick one save it in a wish list ahead of time . the price keeps dropping I can buy them for $50.00 now. Purchased on wish 2 years ago. bbourget69@gmail.com

How do you prevent cumulative humidity with your swamp cooler. when i look online it doesn't appear it draws air from outside
@solarcabin3 жыл бұрын
You should have a window or door cracked open so you get some fresh air circulation. That reduces that humidity buildup that makes you feel sticky and actually make the air cooler coming from the evap cooler.

@solarcabin Жыл бұрын
Batteries and an inverter.
@daniel17319 Жыл бұрын
@@solarcabin can you do it without a battery or inverter, just straight electricity into the motor, I've asked several people this including electricians no one seems to know.
@jamessuraciart3 жыл бұрын
Do you think one would be able to run a portable air conditioner (as well as all other household appliances) on a similar setup? I ask because I live in an area where swamp coolers just make the heat worse and if I go off grid I want a setup where I can be confident that I can still be comfortable.
@solarcabin3 жыл бұрын
On avg it would take at least a 1.5KW system to run a 5K BTU AC unit.
@jamessuraciart3 жыл бұрын
@@solarcabin Would that be just to run the AC, or the AC in combination with other typical household appliances and devices (i.e. fridge, washer/dryer, microwave, water heater, lights, phone/laptop/stereo/wifi/game system, etc. etc....)
@solarcabin3 жыл бұрын
For a traditional whole house system you need at least 5-10KW and most likely a grid tied system. I only do off grid systems.
@jamessuraciart3 жыл бұрын
@@solarcabin Oh, no I don't mean a full size house setup. I'm just one dude, I don't use as much electricity as an entire family would or anything like that, and wouldn't be using everything all at once, plus I only do laundry once a week. I'm already used to having to turn off the AC to use the microwave or my toaster oven (I wouldn't be using a full size stove/oven either-I use a toaster oven, a single burner, and very occasionally the microwave-not simultaneously) since it trips the breaker when I run multiple high power appliances at the same time (I rent a room, so I am running my stuff off two outlets and a surge protector, so sacrifices have to be made). I'm trying to figure out how to go off the grid because this past winter everything froze and the power company where I am at is VERY incompetent and we were without power for 2 weeks, and just a couple months ago the power went out again for almost a day during a heatwave, and when I move I want to make sure that never happens to me again. Fuck being on the grid. I want to generate my own power.

Yes, my wind turbine has a built in controller so you just attach it to a battery directly but some come with a separate controller and you can get a controller for both wind and solar.
