Sarah, never doubted you would manage the water slip up. I don’t think there is much you can’t handle by yourself but always much more comforting with your Luke there! Bless your family!

Awww, Sarah 🤗. 1st, ty for including the adorable clips of Molly not wanting anyone take her bola and of her baring her teeth at the water coming out of the nozzle 😂, she's so cute! 2nd, aww, poor you for being so worried. You were so resourceful to reuse the animal's water. Most people near us have long ago swapped out their flowering decorative plants for succulents. But i ddnt want mom to miss her little flowers, so like you i save the water from rinsing fruit & veg and sticky fingers and from changes of Bunny's water bowl. In about 2 days, i have enough to water ma's flowers in front of the house. It's nice that they're still forming pink and purple blooms for her even tho it's nearly August. 3rd, the love amongst you is beautiful. How the joy left Luke's face when he heard you say the worst thing imaginable happened... and he tried to lighten things a bit by asking Molly to scold you, but his faced dropped again as you continued your story... i imagined he felt so badly for you, knowing you as only Luke does, knowing how you must have suffered from worries and regret and fear 🥺... well the complete absence of jokey Luke spoke volumes about his love for you and all the animals and your fears for garden that produces what all of you eat and fear of the cost to replace a broken pump. 😭 4th, his [formerly secret] pet name for you is so endearing. Idk what it is really, but my mind is latching to "champy" (vs chompy or chumpy) since you Sarah are the champion that you are. Just like Luke is, too, of course. 🤗💖🥰

Running the well dry is a pain. Glad it turned out okay. Saw in another video you guys having hay issues. Have you considered doing a small plot of alfalfa and maybe a plot of millet. This fall you could plant winter wheat, then in January or February sow alfalfa into the stand. This is called frost seeding here in states. Then once wheat heads has hit milk stage you could cut that wheat for hay. Then your alfalfa will take over. You can water it with grey water to increase your cuttings. A 50 meter by 100 meter area could yield 50 bales on first cut. Not use to metric so thats my best conversion lol. With adequate water, fertilizer and long growing season you can get multiple cuttings. As for the millet a plot the same size will yield a good amount of annual hay. My hay supplier got 2 cuttings but he used a lot of fertilizer. For you guys you could cut it as fresh feed in summer, cut some for hay, or let a lot mature as the millet seed makes good goat and pig feed. As for storage of hay consider a homemade hay baler. There are demonstrations of it on utube its basically a wood box with a big wood plunger, with slots to let you tie the strings. Hope this helps and maybe gives you some ideas that will work on your place.

We had problems the last two summers because our spring ran dry. Luckily the farmer nextdoor has a borehole and kindly filled a large IBC for us for the house. To deal with it in future we've invested in a 5,000ltr rainwater harvesting tank for the house and three 1,000ltr IBCs for the garden.

All ended well... No pun intended 😅😂 water is really the biggest hassle and most importantly here... You have to be creative, and you did that really well Sarah 👍👍👍 those shade covers seems to be really sensitive apparently. Because you really barely touched it 🤷 or maybe the heavy sun, makes it brittle real fast 🤔 but like chocolate is the answer to everything...so is duct tape 😂😂😂 I'm really surprised by the goat-bra... It looked awesome and well though. But I guess that when your are thirsty, they got creative as well 😂😂😂 what happened to Maggie's eyes? The same as Timmy? Hopefully all better now 😍
@lukeandsarahsoffgridlife
@lukeandsarahsoffgridlife Жыл бұрын
Maggie's eye is all better now .I just put drops for about 4 days and then she could open it again. No idea what it was . I was really disappointed with the IBC tank covers they are really flimsy ,It could be because of the Portuguese sun but that is what they are there for in the first place. The goat bra was a fail but i am trying again and will see how long it lasts this time😁 and yes Duct tape is the answer to most things 😉

Still loveing videos. Wanted to possibly suggest something to help you with some of the harder work you guys do. Have you considered oxen. Luke could make the yokes and an oxcart. Would really help you out. You could get 2 dairy calfs to make your team. You have to start them out young to train them to the yoke. They could skid logs, haul stuff on cart, and you could even plow your ground for bigger plantings. You have heard the old saying beat your swords into plow shears right. There is a train of thought that it is based on a type of plow that was built by farmers in spain. It was basically a log with an angled notch cut threw the middle. A 2×6 went through that and on top of that they had a sword like piece of metal. Everything was held in place by wedges leting you set depth and to transport easier. It worked a lot like a chisel plow. They plowed it in a checker board fashion and then harrowed it. Which could be built from logs also. Just a thought I wanted to pass on. Since you like animals so much think you would end up enjoying having a yoke of oxen. They could be your tractors that also provide manure lol.

That would be amazing James all in good time we will do that .I would love cows but we can barely afford the animals we have now 😁
@jamespierce-tg7we
@jamespierce-tg7we Жыл бұрын
@@lukeandsarahsoffgridlife totally understand the expense part of having animals. That was partly why I suggested the growing your own hay and millet. Would cut down your costs. How much hay and grain do you buy in? You have the land to provide it but doing it by hand is very hard. This was why I mentioned the oxen and the simple farm equipment that could grow it. All of it could be built by Luke. the oxen are not an overnight endeavor obviously but they would be very handy with a lot of the work you guys are doing as well as letting you scale up some things. Oxen would require more hay but they provide the power to make that bigger hay field. Plus you could winter them on the future millet plot to help fertilize before you plow. Your goat herd is growing is there a market for their milk in your area that could be a good source of revenue . You could even plant a big plot of peas in the spring, use field variety, for a grain based protein source. By mixing millet, alfalfa, wheat, and peas in proper ratios you have rations for goats, pigs, and oxen. Also feed your whey from cheese making to the pigs. They will love it. Eventually I could see you guys having a revenue source from your goats and pigs. Possibly even poultry if you used one of your small fields as a fallow one to raise chickens in. How is your market for pastured poultry there? All this info may not be useful or fit in your plans but I want to share it cause it might help or give you some ideas. Have a good one and that corn looks real nice.

@@jamespierce-tg7we Thanks so much James, we appreciate all the information you share and , right now we are in a bit of a weird place so making things that do not require permits is how i would like to earn a bit extra ..that and grow on youtube as i spend a lot of time working and learning how to better our videos so hopefully that will pay off at some point 😁😁and selling cheese and milk require a lot of paperwork and of course a kitchen that passes inspection etc etc that we are not ready for just as yet ..we are happy and are always trying to improve and we will get there eventually 😁😁

Maybe you can ask what type of corn does OKportugal's neighbor Joachim use that he sows in their dry soil and never ever waters and it shoots up beautiful green stalks with zero ears of corn to provide feed for his sheep? They're in Soleira up just a bit from the Marateca. They're soil gets bone dry, and that corn is chosen bc it thrives in that dry soil.
