Can I just make a few 'mum' type comments?....you could do with getting a nice insulation jacket (B&Q or similar) on the hot water tank, also some foam insulation on the pipes running down the wall. You can paint the foam white if you need it to disappear. Or you could make them a feature and wind coloured bits of fabric round them? You don't want the nice hot water in the pipes going cold on its travels or the cold pipe to freeze when you're not there warming the rooms. That wall opposite the front door- if you find a nice piece of wood that could be sanded and polished, you could add some coat hooks and screw the whole thing to the wall? If you wait long enough the 'Artex' plaster work on the ceiling will become fashionable again lol. It was probably done to hide a cracked and old ceiling : ) Woodchip is a beast to remove, so maybe just paint it something more interesting! Just a weird tip....don't leave any doors or windows open at this time of the year- the vermin will be looking for a nice warm billet for the winter and can nip in so quickly and its almost impossible to get them out once they're in! You probably know, but you can get a swinging rod for above the front door, so it swings open when you open the door, rather than trying to pull the curtain back far enough to get the door open! Like gardens, its always best to live in the house for a year before making any radical changes. Sometimes the things you currently don't like become just another quirky part of the place with time. If you rip out the kitchen- maybe think about getting a local carpenter to build some reclaimed wood cupboards back in? Something modern might be a bit jarring in a house that age? Bet you're glad I'm not actually your mum by now? LOL It all looks fabulous - I've subscribed to see how it all goes. (And of course I'll be messaging to remind you to wear a vest when it gets cold : )
@rewildingjude2 ай бұрын
I LOVE the mum comments!! Thank you so much for taking the time! I have ordered a jacket for my tank! It’s a job for this weekend! And somewhere in my many boxes of stuff - are some coat hooks from my parents house, which I’m going to put up in the hallway! I did not know about the swinging curtain rails though - I’ll look them up! They sound perfect! Yeah, the wood chip is staying because I don’t have the energy to get rid of it! Eventually the plaster will come off the wall, but it can wait until then! And the artex is also staying for now because there might be asbestos in it, and I don’t really want to deal with that 😂🙈 Kitchen wise - reclaimed wooden cabinets would be AMAZING - and potentially something I aim for when I’ve finished renovating - but the bonkers 60s kitchen is staying for now, as eventually this little kitchen / bathroom extension will come down - and I’m going to build a nice patio here instead! Haha. Good call on the rodents - getting a cat and a dog are on my list, but things keep getting in the way!! Thanks again!! (And my mum was always pro-vest ‘got to keep your kidneys warm!’ 😂😂)

But this channel you're commenting on IS outside the states Darlene, so I'm also confused when you state commenting to someone outside the states is nae part of your norrmal experience. This cottage being toured is in the country of Scotland, on the northern end of the island of Great Britain. It is continentally part of Europe. The states are only 4% of the world's population and the remaining 96% of this planet marches on without the states. This is an international streaming platform. It is located on the world wide web so it's accessible to the entire planet. Hope that helps.

It’s great that you have those two rooms upstairs for storage that way you can tackle the boxes out of the way from the rest of your living space. It feels neater that way. I can’t stand the smell of cardboard boxes. A little PTSD from my last big move hahaha. Wishing you so much happiness. Your Mom & Dad I’m sure are so very proud of you. Jude, you could consider rugs as a temporary measure for your bedroom. Thermal curtains might help during winter. You might need to get the chimney swept before you need to use the open fire. An airfryer might be a better option than a new oven. You'd also be able to use it for dehydrating homegrown chillies to make spices, etc

It's quintessentially a Scottish cottage. Lovely. Such views. I'm glad to see you have books around (and no TV, I love that, don't often find another person like us with no TV) because it's going to be perfect for reading by the fire this winter. My top tip, get that water tank covered in a thick insulated cover to save you a fortune in electricity. Your crochet blankets are beautiful.
@rewildingjudeАй бұрын
The views sold me the cottage! I love it. Ahh a fellow no-TV household! People always think I’m odd for that, but I just don’t watch things! I’m a huge reader - most of my books are still in boxes - although I’m a slave to my kindle these days! I didn’t even think about insulating my hot water tank until people commented - but I bought a little jacket for it and it’s all wrapped up now!
@suewilkinson910Ай бұрын
@@rewildingjude So glad it's wrapped up snug 🙂. Not sure why the flow to the tap is so weak though. My tank is in the kitchen under the units, so below the level of the tap and the flow is powerful. It's nothing fancy, just a newer version of yours because the old one failed. Is there a gate valve on the pipe from the tank to the sink tap? If so, it may be stuck half shut. Gate valves are notoriously prone to getting stuck. You might need to replace the valve. We did it by freezing the pipe and making a very swift cut and replace job before the ice melted. We borrowed a freezing tool off a plumber to do it. There is absolutely nowhere in our sitting room for a TV screen. It never occurred to us when we bought the cottage as we didn't have a TV. We have 2 doors, 2 windows, a staircase and a massive inglenook. I'd much rather look at the fire with a book in my hand. Nothing nicer than reading with the fire glowing on a cold winter's afternoon and evening. Your place is already a lovely home. Don't rush it. Your ideas will change as you live there. Things I thought I could not live with at the start I am more than happy with now. I started off doing all the work myself, but then life and work got in the way and slowed it down. Now I've lost the last 10 years to ill health. But I never give up on getting my energy back and have just been able to start doing some smaller things again. 28 years after moving in there is still lots of scope to improve, but it's just the best house ever to live in for us. We love it. And now we have mum living in a small stone barn conversion in our garden. Perfect way to justify renovating an ancient barn and providing elderly care. I am so looking forward to following along. I won't be able to stop myself commenting because I love old houses. If you can find somewhere in Scotland, get yourself on a lime mortar training course. It's a wonderful material to work with and the cottage will thank you for it. Lime plaster inside and lime mortar outside. It looks fab and works so much better than gypsum on old walls.

For the front hallway, put up a coat rack and shoe rack.you can also get an a otterman to store books in and something to sit on while putting on shoes. You will definitely need a thick curtain over the front door. The "dining room can be made into a craft room and library. Line the walls with shelves or buy book cases. Put a cosy chair and lamp in so you can see when crafting. With your water tank, you should lag it. You can get water tank jackets, (we used to just cover with blankets. If not lagging it then put in a couple rack shelves and you can then use it as an airing cupboard. I would also invest in a welly boot scraper. You have done well getting this cottage. It is lovely and the beautiful scenery all around you is beautiful. Age wise I would say closer to 200 yrs ( I lived in an old 1 bed cottage that was similar. To look up Age, paying for public records is 1 way but also if there are old church records ,as that way you can Age it by it' habitation. Librarys are good sources of info too. Other than that put notices up in shops and face book pages asking for info. Explain you are researching the local history and in particular your cottage. Good luck with it all

I love the kitchen colour too. Such a lovely cottage. I would really like to have lived in one but at 63 I may just be a little too old to be dreaming so big. Great place to live Jude. Thank you for sharing.

Hi jude. Your channel came up as a new to me so I watched it & loved what you are hoping to do, as an older person can I say that you are doing great. A few things I would recommend are checking the below before you start any decoration. 1- concentrate on the house structure first ie- make sure it’s water tight top to bottom roof,windows, walls,floors. 2-look at electric supply via mains,solar panels or wind power a simple system that can be added to later is the most efficient solution 3- insulation of the house should be a priority moving forward as it will return the investment 10 fold. Roof,walls,floors, get whatever you can afford that can be reused if you decide to do extra building work later. Personally I prefer the nasa insulation system blankets Iv used that for years and am constantly amazed how efficient & long lasting they are. 4- stock up on dried & tinned goods for winter, not just because of the weather but the price increases and less trips to shops saves on fuel costs 5- a few good quality mouse traps ( you will 100% need them) 6- go on local free sites etc and pick up as many large plastic boxes with lids as you can ( 100% the best way to store everything safe from vermin) 7- look at the ordination of your house & garden, sheds etc before you decide what you will use them for & where you will plant food. 8- it will be tree planting time soon so if you want fruit trees you need to decide what & where to plant asap get ahead now or you will lose a year. 9- I would recommend that you forget about chickens & go for ducks particularly Muscovy duck breed, they are worth their weight in gold for homestead. Produce abundance of eggs, excellent pest control for your garden & much easier to house look after than chickens. 10 - over the next few weeks look at what other homestead owners in Scandinavia counties are doing with greenhouse’s attached to their homes for solar heat gain & growing winter produce. 11- set up a Amazon wish list asap & put a link on your KZbin channel, post more videos 10-15 minutes each day of what you are doing is the most valuable don’t waste time on lots of edits people will love to see the progress. So looking forward to how you progress good luck with your journey

Thank you so much for all your advice!! Yep - besides painting my bedroom, all my energy will be going on the big stuff. I’ve been thinking about my fruit trees ever since I had my offer accepted on the house - there’s definitely going to be a Bramley apple going in somewhere!

Your home reeks of coziness! I think you have the knack for that. I agree that the bedroom needs a little lick of paint and a couple other things to cozy it up. Your new place is very livable so I do not see any urgency to do a big renovation but I am happy that you are taking us along for the ride!
