Tractor brands should invest in trucks like the Unimog U400. Knowing a big part of work in small farms, is towing trailers. It would allow more price competition on the market and lower taxes, being designed as a tractor.

Great truck again Ronny, I love seeing what other blokes do to their trucks & pick up some good ideas or look at alternative approached to use in our truck build. I suppose by now you may have picked up were converting a HINO 4X4 truck that weighs in at just under 9 ton unladed & nearly 14 ton loaded, our build is for full time live aboard with VLR capabilities mate. If the Aussie military is anything like the US Army, the blackout panel is to keep your cab dark when driving with night vision so your monocular doesn’t flare out

Yeah it's the same in the French army. The last thing you want is light hitting you when you driving with night vision.

Yes they are for night driving, has blackout which is very tiny lights you can only just follow people and you have reduced which is tiny little lights at the front. The panel goes over all the interior lights aswell but has little holes so you can see any warning lights going off

They were to help night vision even before NV tech was used for driving. Dash lights make it hard to see when you are driving on blackouts as they reflect on the screen. And they are bloody bright if your eyes have adjusted to no-light conditions!

Haha we used to drive mogs and rovers at night before we even had NVGs. Blackout switch kills all the lights, headlights and taillights so even when you brake no lights come on other than a tiny marker on the back for reference for following vehicles in the convoy.

That's just under 40 stones - it's difficult to imagine being strong enough to line up the hub-bolt holes and manhandle the tire onto the studs, and it's not as if you'll be on a nice piece of flat tarmac.

@@albertdesalvo7273 You'll normally line it up on the ground and then have a couple of bars underneath the tyre so you have some leverage to get it up on to the studs. You're not dead-lifting a 250kg tyre on to the studs by yourself.

@@KarlEller It's obvious one wouldn't deadlift a 250 kg tire onto studs, but even so, shuffling a 250 kg tire to line up the holes with the studs cannot be easy, especially on muddy/sandy/uneven ground.

Thats what I learned to drive in. My first on road driving experience was through Liverpool in Sydney in a Unimog in peak hour traffic. I loved driving our Mogs out bush, they always felt unstoppable. PS the blackouts are only there to allow you to follow each other when youre moving through the bush and no we never had night vision. At least not when I was in between 88 and 92.

The mog came with the PTO winch on some variants. Also they are not tie down points they are sling points for air transport by helicopters, from memory the chinook was the only aircraft that could sling load it.

Great way to repurpose an old smartphone... Be aware that GPS reception isn't stellar under thick tree cover or in canyons, but then you're probably not going to be going very fast in those conditions or too worried about cops.

So the standard ex-ADF mogs are UL1700L. The first L signifies the long wheelbase, and the second L signifies the extended tray at the back. A lot of UL1700L owners just call their model a U1700L, but that’s actually the short wheelbase version. It was hard to tell which one this was from the video. In some shots it looked longer and others it looked shorter. I’m interested to know because I’m having a truck built with a short wheelbase U1700L as the base vehicle.

It’s a standard ex-ADF Mog. The overhang of the camper makes the wheelbase look shorter.

Never heard them called UL1700L, we only called them U1700L and the smaller mogs were called the U1300Ls and meant they had 170hp and 130hp engines respectively.

Hi nzandy, when I drove standard uni mogs in the army , we used a onboard bottle jack Steel support plate/ wheel chocks. You place the jack under the axle support points. Plus carried heavy duty axle support stands once flat tyre was removed. Safety always first in the army! Two man job Hope this helps.
