I think that pretty much every SUV made by Honda and by extension Honda vehicles in general are extremely reliable. To paraphrase Coco Chanel: "You can never go wrong with a Honda."

The VTM-4 Lock is the same as Diff Lock. I believe it was not necessary to engage it at 5:15, it should have been applied to go uphill or stuck situation.

Good to know I can get out in a little snow with my Ridgeline. I'm in the Northeast. Bought an 2006 in Jan 2018 from a friend. The Ridgeline has only 104,000 miles. 12 years old and looks a few years old. Thousands in replacement parts with all the paper work. Very well kept vehicle.

It's really funny to me how much offroad enthusiasts crap on the Pilot. It is a very capable 4x4 machine. I understand it's probably not going to be boulder hopping but it seems to be much more offroad-capable than people give it credit for. I think the Jeep/Highlander/4Runner guys just don't want to admit it. They keep crying about "minivan on a SUV frame" which is not what it is at all. If Honda would change some of the features of it and make it less boring and more agressive styling, I think we would start seeing more of these in the Deserts and Mountains.

I live in Minnesota, have owned 2 Pilots, and can confirm that the Pilot doesn't get enough credit for its snow capabilities. It has great ground clearance, a strong AWD setup, and with the right tires can be formidable.

The winter of 2013-2014 was particularly bad here. Tons of snow...so much that I couldn't keep up with plowing my driveway, you'd clear it and it would pile right on. One day we had about 2 feet of snow on the driveway and 3 foot snow banks at the end of the driveway where the snow clearing trucks had pushed the snow off to the side (they tend to block you in like that). That winter I had for the first time upgraded to Nokian WRG2 SUV all year round winter tires.

That combination was gold: I was in a rush that day with no time to clear snow, so I decided to gun it and back out of my driveway. To my surprise the Pilot had great traction in 2 feet of snow, reached the 3 foot snow bank and easily went right over!! When I returned home that day, I want over the snow bank and into the driveway just as easily. That was the day my respect for the Pilot went through the roof. Since then, I traded in my 2011 for a fully loaded 2014 and will hold onto this one probably until the wheels fall off. Can't wait to take it off-road on trails.

I'm really quite surprised of the off road capability of the Pilot. This did way better in the snowy conditions than the Pathfinder and Sorrento did in dry conditions. Now only if Honda can make it look not boring.

19 MPG Constant AC - 20-21 MPG Occasional AC on the 2WD Combined. Under 200" long so it isn't a boat. Two adults can fit in the 3rd row.

Every car will go down hills! But, not every car will go up a hill if road conditions are not good. I like to see the Pilot stopped midway going up, and then, only then, you start and try to go up a hill. Like to see what happens instead of using momentum to drive the car up the hill.

Nice review. I think you're being a little ginger though. We own a 2005 Pilot and it can take on deeper snow and steeper hills. I can also stop and start on snowy hills pretty easily. It's a great SUV in snow, you should show how it does in harsher situations. Thanks for your reviews.

My brother has A 2004 Pilot and it goes great in the snow. I can't understand why people think it doesn't go good. The weight of it is 4400lbs, which helps a lot, and the right tire makes a big difference too. He has a Firestone Destination tire on and it does Excellent in the snow. I've never known him to be stuck. Another great tire to consider for rough driving and bad weather is the Mastercraft HSX tire. My mother in law had it on her 4Runner and we've had some deep snow, and I never knew her to have one problem in the snow. The Pilot is a very capable snow mobile.

A friend of mine has this car and he says that its a greate winter car and can go through a lot. We're from canada so we get a lot of it. But he says you need the winter tires. I really wish they would stop using all seasion tires they just dont work the same. But this could be why he did not do it in rougher conditions.
