@carnilia yeah that's a huge mistake made by devs, they should make the tutorial pop up for resting state that you should rest frequently because companions may have stuff to say. Instead new players (me included) think they will turn into mind flayer if they rest a lot. The plot and the mechanics of resting kind of work in opposition because the plot urges to progres story as quick as possible. Similar to Cyberpunk, I hate that in games.

Yeah, that was kind of a problem for me as well. I was generally doing way too good in combat and preserving my spells, so I rarely rested in Act 1. Later on I just did so every now and then to check in with my party.

A nice tip: When you hear companions say something in the lines of "i need a rest" it means they have a special dialogue with you in camp at night, long rest, bro, if you collect every camp supply you come across you will always have more than enough for a long rest.

Larien really spun diamonds from straw with this one. Balder's Gate 3's the most amazing game I've ever played, even discounting Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty (which I also adore), which I cannot stop playing, BG3 is the one that has me humming its soundtrack throughout the day and recommending to complete strangers.

also I know everyone is repeating it, but it can't be stressed enough, long resting often is SO important in this game. Maybe more than it feels natural. Because long resting is how you get personal dialogues and cutscenes with companions and you only get one per long rest, and a lot of them need to play out.. so long resting often in act 1 is super important to not miss personal stuff and developments with companions. And don't be stingy with short rests do that as soon as any combat ends on the spot.

On the bright side healing potions are like candy. I'm playing in honor mode right now. Just got to level 5. I'm playing with my brother and no companions, just the 2 of us. We have over 4 healing potions and about 15 greater healing potions between the two of us. I don't think he has fully grasped the short rest and long rest part of D&D and how it works. Not using action surge and flurry of blows for example. He will get there in time either through trial and error or from kind people trying to help him a little in the comments section.

But using short rests and long rests and using short rest abilities isn't telling someone how to play. Its giving good advice to a new player who may not understand the mechanics. It goes under the list of: "What I wish I knew when I first started playing BG3." As far as his aversion to the grove? I think its great! I've never seen anyone do it so I am loving it. My brother and I are playing with just the 2 of us no companions on honor mode. We avoided the harpies until we hit level 5 because we thought it was too dangerous. Quality of life tip that I don’t remember if the game ever explains, but you can actually throw healing potions on the ground to splash the effect in an area. If you split up and arrange your party in a tight + formation, you can throw it in between them to heal everyone at the same time with one potion. 👌 Also, “Even though you’ve only got 1hp, you’re still dangerous. I should finish you off.” is a very good habit to get into early. Taking enemies out of combat entirely is usually better than spreading the damage cuz an enemy with 1hp can still kill you just as easily as you can them lol.

I really like how you embraced exploration that this game will clearly reward. DM: "There is a grove down there" Player: "Yeah, but... nah, there the whole world out there" Fun episode! Keep em coming. Edit and P.S. : Important to note, that introductions for characters are kind of meta-info, so in-game knowledge about characters is not the same as player's. Same with character sheets. Shadowheart or any other companions doesn't know that Astarion is a vampire, or that what diety Shadowheart follows

Not sure if you figured it out, but I think because your controller disconnected then reconnected mid conversation it was trying to add a second splitscreen player. The usual splitscreen process is to plug in a new controller and press start, normally the game is smart enough to auto switch the control scheme for player 1 rather than try to add a player but it seems in a conversation it's a bit iffy.

I feel I'm the only person who enjoys the keyboard controls better than the controller ones. And yeah, as a cleric Shadowheart gets her specialization at level 1 so you don't get to pick it unless you respec her. I'm not fond of the Trickery domain personally but it does fit her thematically. I think that's a genuine good advice, not for game play reasons but for story. During my playthrough I did as few long rests as possible because I was afraid and I was saving my supplies "for later" (as I do on all games as a hoarder). I saw later that I missed on a lot of stuff. I don't know if there are time sensitive quests though you can miss out by taking a long time to act.

@@Cotsos88 this is my very late reply to the last part of your comment: the answer is yes, but not that many. If you see the burning building in act 1 and don’t rescue Counselor Florrick and co. before long resting, they die. If you long rest too many times before rescuing the prisoners at moonrise in act 2, they die. Those are the two that come to mind right now.

Short rests are your friend. Long rests are your friend. Using short rest abilities can also be your friend. I'm not trying to min max your game or even optimize it but as someone new to the game and D&D its things most new players wish they new when they started. As far as the rest of it goes great stuff and I am here for it. Go where you want do what you want play how you want. That's the great thing about BG3 and D&D, everyone gets to experience something a little different based on the choices they make and the roll of the dice. 3 combats per day with a short rest after the first 2 and a long rest after the third is a great general guideline. Then using that as a guideline you can adjust on the fly. There have been times where I have done 1 battle and took a long rest right after because I used so many spells. Other times I have gone 4, 5 or 6 battles because they were so easy.

Don't know if you'll read this, but I'm gonna give you tips on how to build Warlocks like Will as they're on the more complicated end of the spectrum of classes. Eldritch Blast is your bread and butter damage cantrip. It's in fact what makes Warlocks strong, one of the best cantrips. There are two Eldritch Invocations that improve on it, Agonizing Blast and Repelling Blast. They're basically mandatory. The second thing is that Warlocks have very limited spell slots, but they're all at the highest slot available, meaning that you always upcast the spells. Therefore spells that can be upcasted are best. Hellish Rebuke is a great spell, and so is Armor of Agathys, which i highly recommend you get back. Hex doesn't benefit from upcasting, but it's also a staple for warlocks because of its interaction with Eldritch Blast: each bolt from Eldritch Blast triggers Hex and it can quickly amount to a lot of damage. Another thing about Warlock spell slots is that unlike other casters who regain them after a long rest, Warlocks regain them after a short rest, to offset the very limited amount of them.

As someone who is not really a video gamer but who has hundreds of hours in BG3 (and used to play a fair bit of D&D decades ago), I find it interesting how in my initial play-through(s) at least, I would pretty directly follow the hints to the quests and pursue them directly, while the handful of experienced gamers I've watched play this tend to want to look everywhere else first. Not wrong or right, just interesting. 😉 (And in a table-top RPG, if the dungeon master drops a hint that something important is in such and such place, you tend to just go to such and such place -- but then there's no on-line scroll-able map to tempt you away. 😆)

There are a thousand comments about visiting camp often and taking long rests 😂 understandable, but it's still suuuuuper early on so no need to stress too much about it. But i also want to iterate that there are literally mountains of camp supplies in the game and it's basically impossible to ever run out. To help put the comments in context there are 2-3 unique nighttime camp conversations for each companion that you will only see by resting a couple of times BEFORE you enter the Emerald Grove. It's nothing major and i dont think ANYONE see's them on their first playthrough but they're charming and lay a bit of groundwork. Everyone's literally just hankering to see you start unravelling the companions stories 😂 Really enjoying the playthrough, and yes i was amazed by how long you managed to delay going into the emerald grove. 😂 I ran straight in and spent literally 2 solid hours just exploring it and talking to everyone, the grove was when i really knew this was gonna be something special lol.

Rest at camp I only say this not to backseat or anything, but because its something I regretted not doing on my first playthrough much. Funnily enough I was a Monk too, and I adapted the 'only rest when its crucial thing' But the amount of dialogue one can miss is staggering. And you seem to like it a lot when companions interact. Obviously its your playthrough and you can do what you want but I seriously reccomend it if you love companions interacting

The annoying thing is often when a cutscene or forced dialogue is triggered, it will grab the character closest to the thing and they will be the person forced into dialogue instead of your main dude. I think they added a setting to turn this off, but I don't recall.
@VIIIaron
@VIIIaron 5 ай бұрын
I think they just modified it so it chooses your main character more aggressively if they are close enough. it's not an option, unless that was another change later.
@nickrubin7312
@nickrubin7312 5 ай бұрын
it gives priority to main for important cutscenes and when they all have similar conditions (not hiding and such), but that's it, there is no setting for it sometimes, for natural flow, when your main is hiding, and other party member isn't, for instance, and gets spotted - it will choose party member, for natural flow of the game and because it is actually logical choice, since you can't be forced out of hiding (it would be actually bad design to do so) same with stealing and so on, which is good, it shouldn't always pick main, since it is party-based after all, but priority change was still nice addition

@@nickrubin7312 Some triggers like after ending combat can be forced by set to auto switch to main character after combat. In that split second after combat end and cutscene trigger it will switch to main guy and then that trigger that cutscene. does not work always but most of the time.

25:18 I will say just cause I think it’s interesting because I’ve never seen this happen before. If you loot the dwarf here outside of combat you get a cutscene. Because you looted him in combat you never saw the scene xD. It’s not *super* important or anything all the info you learn there can be learned elsewhere but I thought you’d find it interesting for future playthrough reference.

Guidance lasts for 10 turns. So, you can have Shadowheart cast it on you, then go on your own when you know you will need help on proficiency checks, like when you approached the owlbear solo. That is also good to do on areas when you know there might be multiple traps and you don't want everyone to walk all over them. Have her cast Guidance on 1 person, then separate that person and have them walk around with the bonus to their perception checks to find hidden traps. you can do this 1 by 1 on all for party members if the first person failed a check or 2.

Little quality of life feature, you can shift click in your inventory to select a range of items (Works like windows' shift click for files), as well as ctrl click to multi-select multiple items, and then you can drag the whole group (to move it to someone else's inventory, or sell it to the vendor, etc).

A little combat tip - if you stay close to the enemy, they have disadvatage to ranged attacks. Also, Astarion can use sneak attack (ranged or melee) as he will have an advantage even though when not hidden in this case. Sneak attacks are quite powerfull, do not sleep on them ;)

Mapo doesn't read comments with advice or backseating so this is something he'll have to work out on his own - or not. lol It took me two acts to figure out how to use rogues properly, but that's just the nature of a game that doesn't really tell you what to do. The point is to learn by doing!

Chests and barrels you can pick up and send back to your camp. I like to collect an assortment of different styles of chests to keep in my camp supplies. Then I can organize things that I am storing in my camp chest. All weapons go in one chest, all books in another all and so on. There are quite a few different styles of chests.

I'm assuming you've figured this out by now or that someone has informed you... You can (and need to) sneak to be able to not be seen and pulled into combat/dialogue. I don't know the keybind off the top of my head, but you can have the entire group sneak at once as well This isn't something you have to do in combat or in turn-based mode, your entire group can sneak whenever you need to

Potions (that give you conditions, healing potions don't count) you drink also last until a long rest, but you can only have the effects of one potion at a time, so if you drink a potion of Hill Giant Strength, and then drink a potion of Speak with Animals, you will lose the benefits of the potion of Hill Giant Strength.
