Imran Khan seems to have crossed the rubicon, as far as the army is concerned, by defying the army’s dictates. The Pakistani army and the ruling elite tried to introduce a pseudo democracy in Pakistan with a recyclable product called the Prime Minister. That seemed to help the army to manage a puppet on a string and change him when the going gets tough. Just as in economics there is a life cycle of a product with four stages of introduction, growth, maturity and decline there seems to be a life cycle for a Pakistani PM and Imran Khan is in the last stage of this cycle and the launch of the new PM product called Shahbaz Sheriff, to offset the sagging popularity of Imran Khan, has begun. The puppet on the string has all of a sudden come alive, like Pinocchio and has been trying to throw his weight around messing Pakistan up. The twist to the Pakistani saga is that the army chief and the ISI chief are themselves undergoing a leadership change amidst a growing economic and political crisis adding further spice to an already spicy situation.
