Off the Mound shares the process pitchers endure to be scouted at the NCAA and professional level. To chase lifelong pitching careers, players throw themselves into demanding strength workouts to outmatch any hitter at the plate.
The film follows Matt Mika, a sports broadcaster and former Division-I pitcher, and photojournalist Amelia Havanec to examine the highlights and pressures associated with a pitcher’s rise to the top. Few storytellers, however, include the mechanics and methods needed to increase velocity and prevent injuries for audiences still active in the game.
Mika weaves his own expertise with interviews from coach Mike Paul, co-owner of a baseball training facility in Michigan, high school senior Danny Miller, returning to the sport from a controversial pitching-related arm surgery, and starting pitcher for the Oakland A’s, Chris Bassitt, to discuss the intricacies of baseball at their respective careers.
