On the latest edition of Off The Post, Toronto SUN Sports Columnist Steve Simmons, Postmedia Hockey Columnist Bruce Garrioch and Postmedia's Rob Wong discuss where Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin ranks among the all-time greats as he continues his pursuit of Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goal scoring record and if NHL coaches should have more opportunities to challenge via video replay.

Canadian bias on this panel! OV is a unit, not only has he remained healthy for all these years he did it while playing a physical brand of hockey. Greatest goal scorer of all time..

What biased takes. All he does is score? Ovechkin is the greatest scorer of all time, doing it in a time where it's war harder to score. "Bossy would have the record of he played longer"? Are strength and toughness not valuable qualities? Ovechkin has more scoring titles than anyone ever, and no one has more 50 goal seasons. He also has more hits than any other great scorer; he has more hits than Crosby & Stamkos combined. He has 600 assists and he didn't get to play with another generational offensive talent like Malkin or Kucherov. Be real guys.

I knew this was gonna be the petty hate hour on ovie and it didnt disappoint. Ovie is somewhere between 5-10 and go ahead and put your golden boy crosby a spot ahead of him but its stupidity to say hes outside of the top 10. Such clear, obvious and embarrassing bias

top 3 goal scorer and top 10 all time for sure if not top 5!! The hardest thing to do in this league is score goals especially from 2005-2019 and he has nearly 700 assists to go along with 800+ goals and he'll prolly end with 900 goals and 800 assists. Plus, he has won almost everything there is to win. Got a calder trophy, 9 rocket richards, 3 ted lindsays, 3 hart trophies, an art ross, a conn smythe and most importantly a cup. He has never missed much time for any reason too such as injury, sickness or suspension. Guy is the total package and we have been so blessed to have seen him dominate the league for as long as he has. This is the type of player we will likely never see again and it is a shame by how much he is taken for granted by some fans out there simply cause of his style of play or his background or anything else. He is also a hell of a passer and teammate who makes players around him better and a genuinely good dude off the ice who like a lot of players is active within his community!

This is honestly the dumbest convo I think I've ever heard. The hardest thing to do in hockey is score goals (especially now) and Ovi is the greatest all time at that and will likely end up with the goal scoring record as well as a bunch of other all time records. Plus he's done it while being one of the best leaders in the game on and off the ice, While hitting people like a truck, getting more assists then most NHL players have points, winning everything there is to win and he basically saved the Washington Franchise by himself. He's not just a one trick pony, He's one of the greatest of all time. He's easily top 5. You can't have the greatest goal scorer of all time who's literally won everything and setting multiple all time records, not in the top 5.

11 of top 20 all-time goal scorers were born in the 1960s - it was a great time to score goals. Other decades had a single player or two in top 20. Ovi is easily the best goal scorer of all-time, for a career. If Bossy stayed healthy or Lemieux stayed healthy they could have but that did not happen.

Everybody says his wife is the prettiest. Comparing Ovi to Gretzky is like comparing Ronaldo to Pele, totally different areas are not comparable. Everybody's opinion is subjective, only statistics are not.

Just love canadians talking heads discussing Ovi, total bias on display😵and all the logic flies out of the window. Lets not talk about stats as Ovi most likely beats most of the mentioned guys by the time he ends his career, so he's 100% within top10. Talking about what makes a great player most people forget to mention the biggest most important thing - luck. It takes great luck to be able to stay healthy, have no accident inside or outside the rink and various outside factors that the player has no control over. And if you take a look at Ovi career you gonna notice that somewhere he lucky(stays healthy) but in some cases he's luck just drops below zero. Like, he totally missed his potential first season due to being just few days too old!! That potentially another 40-50 goal season. If he played that, there would be no talks about him breaking Gretzky record, he would have already broken it, unlucky. Then there's shortened seasons, covid, his father death and few more. I don't know how many shortened seasons Gretzky had, but i doubt he had more then Ovi. Just thinking of how many big or little things OvI missed due to things he has no control over makes me mad. But that life, and luck plays a big role. In Ovi case he missed like 2-3 seasons of play and potential goals/points. Nonetheless, he still here to beat Gretzky record, crazy dude.

It's one hell of a lot harder to score goals now than it was in Wayne Gretzky's era. Goalie equipment is different. Goalies are better athletes. The rules for the crease have changed. Gretzky would not have the points in this era he had in his era.

Talking heads like Steve and Bruce can debate Ovi and his legacy all they want, but even a white Russian drinking dude can tell you that, "Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man." Because one day, when these Canuckle Heads look up, "Most NHL goals" Alex Ovechkin's name will show up as first, while Wayne Gretzky's name will show up as second. But please. Continue your "debate" about the greatest goal scorer of all time.

@@ethanparker7900 I'm guessing you've never seen Orr play. He was the best defensive defenceman AND the best offensive defenceman. His era included dozens of hall of famers.
