Also being a 70's child this is relatable. They didn't lock the door though, yet they did tell us to go outside and play, and don't come back till dinner time. And that was a time when we would drink from the garden hose, dig in the dirt, hike through the woods, ride bikes around the neighborhood. Play baseball at the park. And my brother even had a boomerang.

Riding your bike to go find your friend, borrowing vhs tapes, water balloon fights, tag (we called it touch), etc. In Zambia where I grew up, we used to look for perfect wires so that we could make wire car push toys with a long steering wheel going through the roof of the wire car and drive it around the neighbourhood, only to find out driving wire cars was a thing all over Africa. Google wire car toys Africa and see the geniuses at work. We all tried to make those cars but not everyone was a genius and engineering the wheel mechanism.
