I appreciate this caliber of conversation. However, I don’t feel that people will innately fall into chaos without the guidance of religion. I feel that concept is a fear tactic propagated by religious organizations in order to maintain followers. I grew up without a religion forced down my throat and still was able to discover morality and learn about different religions. But I never felt inclined to join those organizations to safeguard my morals. Just a different perspective.

Each area has evolved according to the laws that where brought by religion. The idea that having multiple wives is wrong, stems mainly from the Bible - while other religions allow multiple spouses.

He was also originally a Hindu but noted cultural issues within society that he thought he'd be able to solve by bringing people back to the essence of what Hinduism really is ie. Connecting with God and attaining enlightenment. There has been other reformist branches such as Jainism and Sikhism that sought to filter out cultural practices that directly conflicted with what scriptures stated but unfortunately, like with any old religion, people will mix culture with religion and not exactly be practicing but still identify with said religion without actually knowing what any of their scripture says.

I think Bart touched on something very interesting, that it almost seems human nature to turn to idolatry and worship. Because of some comments here I tried to research the origins of morality (specifically on killing) in Chinese history. Unfortunately I was unsuccessful, the search results often only talk about the relationship between religion and morals. What I did find interesting though was that although China's largest school of thought being Confucianism, and it not being a religion, it had the same effects on its believers like Christianity and Buddhism had for theirs. And although it cannot be classified as a religion due to it not innately calling for its followers to worship any deity or saint, through the years that's exactly what people did; they worshipped and idolized Confucius! I wonder what that says about the human condition to want a figure of power to control and comfort us.

Religion at it's core is a tool/ideology for man to seek understanding and certainty. Because of our tribal tendencies, humanity tends to lean towards picking a leader that provides clarity or certainty. Confucious became deified because of our innate tendencies.

Totally agree with what Joe said at the start in regards to Buddhists and rituals, a lot of Buddhists like to just pray, chant and go to temple but only as a ritual. It’s become a norm for them since they’ve followed their parents/grandparents do it. But the sutras that Buddhists chant/recite are the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha that was meant to be practised. Not just something to chant for 1 hour a day and that’s it. It’s fine if people want to chant it, it can be another form of meditation as you solely focus on reciting. But without actual meditation, practising observation of the natural breath/Anapana or observation of the mind and the sensations of the body without reaction/Vipassana, you won’t reap the benefits of what Shakyamuni Buddha taught. It’s as if you sit and pray for health but then you go and eat junk food and never exercise. Its useless reciting “I wish to be healthy, I wish to be healthy” or “I wish to be wise, I wish to be wise” but you don’t actually take part in the practises that will bring you what you wish for.

To note the difference between quran and bible is a lot but in terms of legitimacy the quran have chains of narration that they can link through each person and go all the way back and ppl have memorised it since so it never changed in text. The bible authors are mostly unknown and can't ve traced to a direct person

Personally for me, Scientology just doesn’t seem right when you research into its founder and the stuff he did. He was charged with fraud and petty theft. Not to mention, the religion itself won’t allow ex members to have contact with its current members. Even if they are your family members. So if your father is a member of the church of Scientology and you have just left it, he can no longer see you. Like what kind of religion breaks apart a family, that’s a big no no. Another thing, it’s followers are made to pay money to the church whilst being a member. Me being a Muslim, if we are ever asked to give money, it either goes towards the poor and needy or towards helping with resources (food during fasting month etc.) but in Scientology, it goes towards those that are higher up. Like please, if that’s what you want go for it but I’d be really cautious before jointing because it’s gonna be hectic.
