A proper seam/stitch weld should be an inch long weld every 2 inches. Those little tack welds will only give a fraction of the stiffness that an inch weld would. All you need to do is join 2 tacks together then miss one and then join the next two and so on. Coming along nicely though 👍
@OffBeatGarage
@OffBeatGarage 9 жыл бұрын
+Chris Green A "proper" stitch weld is biased on whoever is telling you the information. There's a lot more that went into the decision of doing tacks vs beads and that was discussed in a prior video. Thanks,

Hey man just a tip, cut the spare wheel tub out and weld a piece of rhs between the chassis rails then tie your cage into the rhs diagonally from the strut towers, Run your cage through the fire wall into the engine bay and tie it into the front strut towers, also there's a cut out in the chassis rail underneath we the car that a lot of people add back in. Also throwing some cross braces between the rails where ever you have room will be ideal. Should seam weld under neath also, as the chassis is only spot welded to the sheet metal and will twist. Very fun part of a build is designing your own ways to stiffen your car.

A stitch weld would technically be an inch long or so. You are doing tack welds or spot welds. When reinforcing a chassis inch long welds are what is generally performed. And, since you went through all that effort, you could have seam welded the whole deal, doing little sections at a time, which is even stronger than stitching. But, at least you are doing something! So kudos for actually trying stuff out. And. mad props on actually using safety gear!! Keep it up!

Depends on what level of a driver you are. If you're a high level driver it will be really noticeable. Also on cars that come convertible such as a Miata it makes a huge and very noticeable difference in stiffness. But really for me, if I'm stripping the entire car, building a cage in it, and then taking the time to repaint the entire interior it would bother me so much knowing I didn't take the time to stitch weld.

im at 5:57 now but i got a question, why stitch weld the floor ? because it looks cool or ? i might get your answer later in the vid, Thanks for making so long vids ! really cool vids :) But since you are most likely gonna run a cage those stitch welds doesnt matter in a crash that much or is it a common fault in the S13 chassi that they are bad? i welded a floor on a S13, never again :P
@Tivoliterror
@Tivoliterror 9 жыл бұрын
OH! and keep up the good work man! its so much fun to watch even though i dont own a S13! :D its reaaaally inspiring and makes me want to weld my car sooooooo much! and people are talking so much good about you all over not just on youtube! :D btw you should try Rfactor, i sent you a Snap :P jdahl92
@OffBeatGarage
@OffBeatGarage 9 жыл бұрын
+Tivoliterror The answer is at the end of the video haha. The front floor seam ties the main cabin to the front end of the car so that's a crucial point to increase stiffness and reinforce the chassis. Same goes with the back seam except it connects the back of the car to the main cabin. I'll be running a cage yea haha but stitch welding isn't for safety in a crash. It reinforces the individual pieces of the car to make it a stiffer more responsive chassis. The roll cage only welds in to 8 points so you can see why having a widespread reinforcement would give increased stiffness over the cage.

Do you have any plans to add something like adjustable top mounts for more camber or is something like that, or is it not nessecary for drifting? Think Eibach do a decent set. On another note perhaps adding stiffer bushing would be a good idea as it would stiffen up (heey ohh) how everything feels i.e some of the powerflex black series stuff. I have some friends that have said it made a big difference for them... also its a pretty cheap upgrade and if the car has a questionable history the factory ones are probably quite sloppy for racing feel. Think my pal got an entire suspension kit for about £100 although he did say that the engine ones he got on top of those helped his tourqe steer quite alot. not an issue for you i guess being RWD. Good vid

I am very interested in how you plan to weld that rollcage near the roof. I saw when people do this they cut floor panel so they can drop whole tack welded cage and weld it properly. Are you planning to do something similar? And how your rollcage will connect to windshield frame?
@OffBeatGarage
@OffBeatGarage 9 жыл бұрын
+Ярослав Немирович My base plates are boxes rather than flat pieces of metal welded to the ground. So before I weld the base plate to the floor I can move it out from underneath the roll cage and that will give me about 4 inches above the cage to weld. Roll cage will connect to the windshield frame via dimple die gussets. Thanks,

Two part question, 1. Where do you get your spare tires for drifting and 2. Do you daily the 240? if not i know you drive it to the tracks you drift at, so how does the welded Diff handle? Im wondering because im looking to build a Daily/Drift e36 and would probably weld the diff, can i daily drive with a welded diff?
@OffBeatGarage
@OffBeatGarage 9 жыл бұрын
+Muffin Tops 1. Get tires from onlinetires.com which is the cheapest place to get tires from where I live. 2. I don't necessarily daily it, I just drive it whenever I feel like it. Welded diff handles fine, I've done hard canyon driving with a welded and had no issues with losing grip. Nikita also keeps up with F80 M3 in the canyon while driving with his basic SR setup, welded diff and 235 tires. It's really only going to kick out if you want it to. Other than that, in the rain, just drive normal and you'll be fine, if you take a turn really fast then the back end will kick out. That's as far as grip goes. Besides that, tires will get worn down super fast. Like 5k miles for a set of rear tires. Although that really shouldn't be a problem if you're drifting cause you go through tires way faster on the track anyways. TLDR: it works fine for daily, plenty of grip, will just eat tires. Hope that helps,

@OffBeatGarage

+Mark Goosen Depends on how close you do them. If you notice in the video I skip around every 3 inches or so going back and forth to different areas so that way I can weld one section while I wait for the other section to cool. That way you can keep on welding and don't run the risk of warping.
