A true crime against humanity that the entire production was not properly committed to film, and carefully curated so it would be a durable document of such great artistry. If only one of our decadent billionaires would throw money at a project that would do actual good for actual humanity, that would not create Unintended Consequences, and would boost their ego for the right reasons. Find a way to piece together the disparate fragments of what does exist on film/video, then with the new "deep fake" technology that is a thing now, make a seamless whole, correct the light balance, and what a gift to the world. The doing of which would make a great documentary, no doubt. A boy can dream, can't he? Thanks for the upload, paz.

I am sure that this rehearsal was video taped complete.... When I asked few years back Richard B about this performance he sent me the DVD copies.... Probably who ever copied them made a mistake... and I never got the whole thing. I am sure it will come up some day.

@@Alexgent07This was a performance, not a rehearsal. It was the second performance of the run. Why do you think it was a rehearsal? The Met taped the entire opera for later sale or broadcast, but it was such a technical mess that it was never shown. The Venetian act was particularly bad because it was so dark and cameras couldn’t film well in such darkness in 1973.

This is true. It does exist, as I have seen it. Not putting it out there for history is a bad mistake. This is the first time I’ve seen this section on KZbin. Thank you.

@@richardholmesmusic2128 With modern technology, the lighting can be fixed. Wolfgang Wagner originally refused to release the taped Tannhauser because it was too dark, the one directed by Freidrich and starring Gwyneth Jones in both soprano roles. Eventually, it was digitally enhanced and it remains IMO the best Tannhauser on DVD.

I’ve heard - it may be a rumor - that both the Met and Bonynge have a pristine copy of the tape. But it has never been released, possibly due to union issues. This was one of the very first opera performances I ever saw. It was long before the days of subtitles, so I frankly had no idea what was going on. But I remember those huge cameras on either side of the stage; they looked like cranes. And I was in shock from the incredible voices of Sutherland and Domingo.

This video was sent to me by Richard himself.... I also remember he mentioned the Don Giovanni tape from the Met.... that recently was finally released by the Met

@@Alexgent07 Yes, the Don Giovanni was offered for free viewing by the Met during the pandemic. My son recorded it from the computer; I wouldn’t have had a clue how to do it. So this the best tape in existence? It’s better than nothing, but it’s a shame that it hasn’t been digitally enhanced to bring it to higher quality. I know that Wolfgang Wagner refused to release the Goetz Freidrich Tannhauser tape because it was way too dark. But it was reprocessed into the extraordinary performance we can watch today on DVD.
