Lyrics: 1st verse: When Britain first, at heav'n's command, Arose from out the azure main, Arose, arose from out the azure main, This was the charter, the charter of the land, And Guardian Angels sang this strain: Chorus: Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves! Britons never, never, never shall be slaves. Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves! Britons never, never, never shall be slaves. 2nd verse: Still more majestic shalt thou rise, More dreadful from each foreign stroke, More dreadful, dreadful from each foreign stroke. And the loud blast, the blast that tears the sky Serves but to root thy native oak. 3rd verse (Welsh version of 1st verse): A Phrydain gododd ar alwad nef A chodi fu o'r tonnau câs Hwn oedd y siarter, y siarter drwy'r holl wlad, A hon yw cân yr engyl glan. 4th verse: The Muses, still with freedom found, Shall to thy happy coasts repair, Shall to thy happy, happy coasts repair. Blest isle! with boundless, with boundless beauty placed, And manly hearts to charge the fair. 5th verse Encore: same as the 3rd.

As an Englishman, I LOVE that he sang part of this in Welsh. Welsh is a beautiful poetic language and the closest thing to the original language of the majority of our ancient ancestors throughout the whole of Britain, we should all treasure it.

I well remember Bryn singing at the Last Night of the Proms dressed in Welsh rugby kit. Aged 24 at the time, I was singing along - the key was Ab major, not G. The men were all wearing white dinner jackets, very smart indeed. Now aged 53 and looking back on half a lifetime ago!

When Britain first, at heaven's command, Arose from out the azure main, This was the charter of the land, And Guardian Angels sang this strain: The nations not so blest as thee Must, in their turn, to tyrants fall, While thou shalt flourish great and free: The dread and envy of them all. Still more majestic shalt thou rise, More dreadful from each foreign stroke, As the loud blast that tears the skies Serves but to root thy native oak. Thee haughty tyrants ne'er shall tame; All their attempts to bend thee down Will but arouse thy generous flame, But work their woe and thy renown. To thee belongs the rural reign; Thy cities shall with commerce shine; All thine shall be the subject main, And every shore it circles, thine. The Muses, still with freedom found, Shall to thy happy coasts repair. Blest isle! with matchless beauty crowned, And manly hearts to guard the fair. Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves!
