OFFGRID with REMOTE INDIGENOUS TRIBE | SAILING AFRICA
Welcome back! If you are new here, we are a sailing family who have recently arrived in East Africa after crossing the Indian Ocean in our floating home. Today we find ourselves heading inland, across most of Northern Tanzania to the remote Lake Eyasi basin, to spend an incredible, yet overwhelming three days with Tanzanias oldest indigenous tribe, the Datoga people. This tribe live a completely off grid traditional lifestyle. We are pinching ourselves that we're here in what can only be described as a David Attenborough type setting. As we join the tribes people in celebration for their traditional, sacred funeral ceremonies, called Bung'eda.

To experience 1/100th of what you guys have during all your travels would fill up anyone's dance card. I saw where putting together a documentary episode was suggested. I say move all of your different cultural related material to the cloud or separate (and dedicated) hard drive. Your editing is superb Rachel. Serious Hollywood type superb. @cestmoi1262 I'm not quite sure what you're saying here or what the caps and sunnies have to do with responsibility. This tribe are not perfect. However, being responsible for their family and community is something that is foremost in their lives. There is virtually no pregnancy out of wedlock as it is completely frowned upon and punished. But if it happens, the child is reared by an uncle and his wife. Their number one rule is to protect the family, no one gets left behind. And no one is concerned about their pronouns.

@@TheCruisingKiwis Just to clarify (hopefully) it is commendable that the tribe has such high standards --- sorely missing in our "modern" society. Still, 50 children from one person is not acceptable in my opinion and that includes Elon M. I am looking for the source of why certain groups have unique opinions/behavior towards a mentality that sets them apart from others. Some 20 years ago I came across a report from Washington DC where a group of immune from prosecution diplomats from one country accumulated over 350 parking tickets --- none of them paid for. The opposite were diplomats (I believe Finland) who had 8 parking tickets and all 8 of them paid! what! Different strokes for different folks? The second part (caps & sunglasses) I stated poorly. We see the start of modern influences while attending ancient rituals. Pretty soon this will be offered for exchange of money and the base meaning is lost. Now, your last comment about no concern about pronouns is absolutely encouraging. There seems to be hope coming from places that we generally don't consider.

@cestmoi1262 I'm enjoying this exchange and I recognise the angle that you are coming from. However, I don't think you can compare this indigenous, rural tribe to western culture. They have two things that they value most, family and cattle. A rich man can have 1000 cows. If he does, he needs a large family to help herd them. The Datoga are fiercely independent and take no money from the government to help raise their children (although a recent development has a charity educating some of the young girls, but that's another story). No one suffers from depression, there is no jealousy between wives, and they all take responsibility for their actions, which makes for a strong community. Africa and America are like chalk and cheese in terms of lifestyle and attitude. Yes, there are elements of modern apparel, there were quite a few cell phones too.
